The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Fossil Chimaeroid Remains (Chondrichthyes: Holocephali) from Williamsburg County, South Carolina, Usa

Cicimurri Campbell Geology Museum, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina 29634 <[email protected]> ABSTRACT Three fossil holocephalian tooth plates have been recovered in Kingstree, Williamsburg County, South Carolina. All of the fossils were collected from a lag deposit containing a temporally mixed vertebrate assemblage. Two specimens, an incomplete left mandibular tooth plate and an incomplete left palatine tooth plate, are Edaphodon and compare favorably to E. mirificus. The third specimen is an incomplete and highly abraded right mandibular tooth plate from a very young individual that is questionably referred to Edaphodon. The tooth plates were associated with Cretaceous shark and dinosaur teeth, Paleocene shark and crocodilian teeth and turtle bones, and Plio-Pleistocene shark teeth and terrestrial mammal remains. The source of the Cretaceous fossils is arguably from Maastrichtian (late Cretaceous) strata (i.e., Peedee or Steel Creek formations), whereas Paleocene fossils are likely derived from the Danian (lower Paleocene) Rhems Formation. These fossils were probably concentrated together during Plio- Pleistocene sea level highstand, at which time the younger vertebrate material was deposited. Distribution and Habitat Associations of Spotted Ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei) in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary A Capstone Project Presented to the Faculty of Science and Environmental Policy in the College of Science, Media Arts, and Technology at California State University, Monterey Bay in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Heather Kramp May 9, 2012 Kramp 1 Abstract Improved knowledge of how fish associate with seafloor habitat features is imperative for understanding how species are distributed and for the proper implementation of successful management strategies. The spotted ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei), is a deep water species of the Chimaeridae family occurring along the west coast of the United States. The abundance of spotted ratfish and their importance as both a predator and prey species implies they play an important role in deep sea marine ecosystems. However, little knowledge on the life history, distribution, and habitat associations spotted ratfish presents a significant management challenge for mitigating bycatch of the species. Videographic imagery collected within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) between 2006 and 2010 using an ROV and towed camera sled provided the opportunity to explore the habitat associations of spotted ratfish. The precise locations of 149 individuals were plotted across four major study areas, including northern Monterey Bay, Point Lobos, Point Sur, and La Cruz Canyon. A habitat selectivity index was calculated to determine positive and negative associations with available habitat types. Spotted ratfish were primarily associated with mud substrates as well as some boulder and ridge habitats. Habitats including cobble and brachiopod beds showed a negative association. -

239 DARK GHOST SHARK (GSH) (Hydrolagus novaezealandiae) 1. FISHERY SUMMARY (a) Commercial fisheries Two species (dark and pale ghost sharks) make up virtually all the commercial ghost shark landings. Dark ghost shark (Hydrolagus novaezealandiae) was introduced into the QMS from the beginning of the 1998–99 fishing year for the 10 FMAs shown above. Both ghost shark species are taken almost exclusively as a bycatch of other target trawl fisheries. In the 1990s, about 43% of ghost sharks were landed as a bycatch of the hoki fishery, with fisheries for silver warehou, arrow squid and barracouta combining to land a further 36%. The two ghost shark species were seldom differentiated on catch landing returns prior to the start of the 1998–99 fishing year. Estimated landings of both species by foreign licensed and joint venture vessels over the period 1 April 1978 to 30 September 1983 are presented in Table 1. Landings by domestic (inshore) vessels would have been negligible during this time period. The unknown quantities of ghost sharks that were discarded and not recorded are likely to have resulted in under-reported total catches over the full period for which data are available. Commercial landings of ghost sharks have been made in FMAs 1–9. In the early to mid 1980s about half of the reported ghost shark landings were from FMA 3. Virtually all the additional catch was spread over FMAs 4–7. Landings have tended to increase over time. In 1988–89, landings from west coast South Island (FMA 7) began to increase, almost certainly associated with the development of the hoki fishery. -

It is distinct from other eastern Pacific chimaeroids by the following characteristics: a large slightly curved dorsal fin spine extending beyond dorsal fin apex, a long second dorsal fin of uniform height throughout, large pectoral fins extending beyond the pelvic fin insertion when laid flat, trifid claspers forked for approximately one-quarter the total clasper length and a uniform black coloration throughout. The new species is compared to other eastern Pacific members of the genus Hydrolagus including H. alphus, H. colliei, H. macrophthalmus, and H. mccoskeri. Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) video footage has identified and documented Hydrolagus melanophasma from the Gulf of California. -
