This is accomplished most powerfully through the disbursement of about one billion dollars towards various Jewish organizations and interests within the state.

Just like any political body, the Congress is made of parties which represent different interests in the Jewish world. The party affiliated with the Conservative Movement and which works to broaden reli- gious and cultural pluralism in Israel is MERCAZ. The more votes MERCAZ gets, the larger the financial allocation to Conservative affiliated institutions in Israel like The Masorti Movement, NOAM youth movement, TALI, Machon Schechter, Masorti Olami, and more. Since the last World Zionist Congress election in 2015, it is safe to say that these institutions together have received around $10,000,000. So, we are not talking about small sums!

Here is more detailed information: 1) Every 5 years, Jews around the world are asked to step-up and be counted in the World Zionist Congress election. The elections are taking place right now until March 11th. There are 507 total representatives in the Congress which are divided amongst different countries around the world: 190 representatives come from Israel, 165 from the Diaspora (excluding the US), and 152 from the United States, by far the largest contingent from a single country outside of Israel, comprising almost one third of all elected representatives. 8 Beth Sholom Congregation Jews in Medieval Spain

We would like to thank Rabbi Leila Berner for teaching mem- bers of Kol Ami and Beth Sholom all about the Jews and how they faired living in Medieval Spain. They lived in relative peace, although with restrictions, amongst their Christian and Muslim neighbors. Sometimes they were protected by the leadership of Spain and sometimes not. It was a very tricky balance of day to day living. But it was extremely interesting.

Rabbi Berner and Cantor Shulie are planning a trip to Spain for the summer of 2021. Please see the ad on page 11. If you are inter- ested in this exciting trip and in learning more about how Jews were treated and lived in ancient times, then you will want to sign up for this adventure.

It is customary to participate in the ritual of mishloach manot—the “sending of portions,” which refers to the gift baskets we prepare to give to family and friends in and around the holiday of Purim. The mitz- vah of giving these gift baskets is derived from the Megillah, the Book of Esther. One of the purposes of giving is to increase love and friendship among Jews and their neighbors. It is a beautiful mitzvah to participate in and it is also fun and fulfilling. You can customize it to your liking, but these are some ideas to get you started: mini bottle of grape juice, hamantaschen (bonus points if they’re home baked!), choc- olates, a savory snack, some fruit like clementines. These are basic ideas that are easily adaptable to your personal taste.

We hope you fulfill this beautiful mitzvah and decide to create your own baskets of goodies for the Purim holiday, and we hope to see you at our Purim celebration! Chag Sameach!

ISHMAEL KHALDI— A JOURNEY FROM SHEPHERD TO ISRAELI DIPLOMAT SUNDAY MARCH 22 AT 2:00 P.M.

Ishmael Khaldi will talk to us about how he began his life as a shepherd, became an educated world traveler, and went on to become Isra- el’s first Bedouin diplomat. We will also hear about Israel’s culture, society, and politics from the perspective of a minority citizen. He will also discuss his efforts to help the Bedouin transform themselves from a conservative to modern society in an effort to become part of Israel’s success story.

Mr. Khaldi is a member of a Bedouin tribe that makes its home in the hills northeast of , in the Zevulun Valley, and near kibbutzim Ramat Yohanan and Kfar HaMacabbi. He initiated an advocacy project called “Hike and Learn with in the Galilee” that has brought thousands of young Jews to the village of Khawaled to learn about Bedouin culture and history. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in politi- cal science from the and a Master’s degree in political science and international relations from . In 2004, he was appointed to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, serving at the San Francisco con- sulate from 2006 to 2009. In 2010, he published a book about his experience entitled, “A Shepherd’s Journey: The Story of Israel’s First Bedouin Diplomat.”
