The church, where many Chris- tians believe Jesus was crucified, has had its bank account frozen at the request of Hagihon over an unpaid $2.3m bill. The dispute has left hundreds of priests, monks and teachers un- paid. The church has traditionally not been charged for water, but Hagihon says it is owed money for the past 15 years. According to the Israeli newspaper Maariv, there was a tacit agree- ment between the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem - which, along with the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate and the Roman Catholic Franciscan Custos, is jointly responsible for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre's administration - and a former mayor of the city that the church would be exempt from water bills. Referred to Newsletter by Vince Crowley KHS 3 Latest News Australia’s New Papal Nuncio Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the only English- born nuncio in the active service of the Holy See, is the new papal nuncio to Australia www.cathnews.com/uploads/doc/2012/12/New%20nuncio%20for% 20Australia.pdf GERARD O'CONNELL ROME Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher as the new apostolic nuncio to Australia. Since being ordained as a priest in 1977, he has served in Tanzania, Uruguay, the Philippines, the Vatican, Strasbourg and Burundi, be- fore his current role in Guatemala. The Vatican broke the news on December 11, after the Australian Government had given its agreement. Archbishop Gallagher succeeds the Italian Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarrotto whom the Pope last August sent as nuncio to Israel, and simultaneous as nuncio to Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine. A man of considerable diplomatic experience, the 58-year old Archbishop Gallagher is the only English-born nuncio in the active diplo- matic service of the Holy See. At the time of his appointment to Australia he was nuncio in Guatemala, where he had served since Febru- ary 2009. Born in Liverpool in 1954, he studied at the English College, Rome, and gained his degrees in Philosophy and Theology at the Jesuit-run Gregorian University. He is the only English-born nuncio to have trained at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy where the Holy See’s diplomats are trained, and to have risen through the ranks of its diplomatic service to the rank of nuncio. A diplomat with wide and diverse experience in the service of the Holy See, he comes to Australia after serving in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. Australia is a religiously diverse country of over 22 million people. Christianity is the predominant religion and Roman Catholicism is the largest Christian denomination in the country, with some 26% of the people declaring themselves Catholic. There are also several non- Christian religions in this land, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and the Sikh faith. Archbishop Gallagher arrives in Australia at a particularly delicate moment when the Catholic Church is once again in the public spotlight for the way it dealt with the sexual abuse of minors by priests in past decades. Parliamentary inquiries are already under way in the states of Victoria and New South Wales and, on November 12, Australia’s Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announced that a national Royal Commission would investigate how the various institutions in the country, both private and public, responded to allegations of child abuse. It seems clear that queries about how the Catholic Church and its various institutions responded to the abuse of minors by priests was a major factor in the Federal Government’s decision to hold this nationwide inquiry, a decision that polls show has widespread pop- ular support. Archbishop Gallagher began his diplomatic service in Tanzania and from there moved to Uruguay, the Philippines and later to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, after serving in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, in the Second Section which handles the Holy See’s relations with states. Pope John Paul II sent him as nuncio to Burundi in April 2004 as successor to the Irish-born Archbishop Michael Courtney who was assas- sinated at the end of 2003. His posting there was a dangerous one as he sought to encourage the fragile peace process after a civil war that cost 300,000 lives. In the last year of his service in Burundi rebel shells aimed at the Presidential Palace hit the nunciature by mis- take, causing damage to the building but fortunately no lives were lost. Gallagher was out of the country at that time but returned im- mediately disregarding the potential danger. Then in 2009, Pope Benedict sent him to Guatemala, a nation that was still recovering from one of Central America’s most bloody and longest civil wars (1960-1996) that caused the deaths of over 200,000 people – most of them indigenous people, as well as the disap- pearances of a great many (40-50,000) who are still unaccounted for. But there, thanks to the persistence of Church – and especially the efforts of the assassinated Bishop Juan Gerardi (1998), and human rights groups, and with the help of the courts, the United Nations and the International Community in the Peace Process, truth began to emerge, justice began to be implemented and peace was consolidated. Archbishop Gallagher sought to support the unfolding of this important chapter in a land where there is still much poverty and insecurity. He also sought to help the local church and population when natural disasters struck during his time as nuncio there. All is past and gone, all has failed... and the austere weather which succeeds, though ungrateful to the body, is in tone with our feelings, and acceptable. Thus the soul is cast forward upon the future... and does it rejoice that there are new heavens and a new earth to come. These are feelings of holy men waiting earnestly for the Advent of Christ.” Through Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds and Magi, the human race for the first time saw God face to face. In earliest days “Advent” marked that “Coming” of Christ – Christmas Day. In time, the scope of the mystery was broadened to include a preparation for his Christmas Coming and his “Final Coming” on Judgment Day. There is no better way to prepare for these mysteries than by celebrating what is so central to our Faith, his sacramental Coming in the Eucharist – for which we should prepare as well. Through the Sacrament of Penance, may each of us entrust to the forgiving Christ “all that is past, all that is gone and all that has failed” as we earnestly await for the Advent of Christ and the new hope it brings this Christmas.     CONSTITUTION OF THE EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Translated from the Italian Original 1978 Note: Pages I, II, III, IV, VI, and VIII are blank. PREAMBLE “You are to be my witness in Jerusalem, and throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1.8) *** The Knighthood is defined as self-discipline, generosity and courage. Whosoever does not have the firm willingness to develop and deepen these traits in his life will never be able to become a True Knight. The zeal for self-renunciation, in the midst of abundance, generous aid to the weak and those without protection, courageous struggle for justice and peace are the characteristic virtues of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. The tie with Jerusalem which is manifested in the Order and exacts responsibility for the Holy Places orients our desires toward the heavenly Jerusalem. (Gal. 4.26) The Holy Sepulchre is the symbol of the Passion shared with Jesus and also of our hope in the Resurrection. (Phil. 3.10) The Cross which we wear is not just jewelry but a testimony of our submission to the Cross of Christ. The form of the Cross which is the symbol of the Order brings to our minds the five wounds of our Lord as well as the suffering in the Holy Land with the loss of its own blood. “The Pilgrim Shell” reminds us of the reality that we are all pilgrims on this earth, and recalls also our pledge to aid the needy. Exemplary moral conduct and true Christian feeling are the prime requisites for admission to the Order.

    N. 0365 Mercoledì 13.05.2015 Joint Statement of the Bilateral Commission of the Holy See and the State of Palestine at the conclusion of the Plenary Meeting (13.05.2015) On 13 May 2015, the Bilateral Commission of the Holy See and the State of Palestine, which is working on a Comprehensive Agreement following on the Basic Agreement, signed on 15 February 2000, held a Plenary Session in the Vatican to acknowledge the work done at an informal level by the joint technical group following the last official meeting held in Ramallah at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine on 6 February 2014. The talks were chaired by Mgr Antoine Camilleri, Under-Secretary for the Holy See’s Relations with States, and by Ambassador Rawan Sulaiman, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs of the State of Palestine. The discussions took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere. Taking up the issues already examined at an informal level, the Commission noted with great satisfaction the progress achieved in formulating the text of the Agreement, which deals with essential aspects of the life and activity of the Catholic Church in Palestine. Both Parties agreed that the work of the Commission on the text of the Agreement has been concluded, and that the agreement will be submitted to the respective authorities for approval ahead of setting a date in the near future for the signing. FRANCIS XAVIER IN EUROPE AND ASIA Rachel Miller, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Recent historical studies have focused on the vital role that Catholic saints played after the Council of Trent, investigating how these holy figures were utilized to alleviate all manner of problems besetting the Post-Tridentine Church, emerging European nation states, and individual Catholics. My dissertation, however, approaches this issue from an art historical perspective, considering how images of St. Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary, exercised considerable agency in an early modern world rife with global crisis. Specifically, I investigate Xaverian prints and paintings created in border zones of early modern Catholicism or in territories of the Iberian empires, particularly Antwerp, Goa, and Naples.

The Knights of Saint Peter refers to the honoured investiture Knighthood of the Holy See., This Spur of Gold, is not to be confused with The Spur of Gold awarded by The Royal Cavalry Until 1500, at The Papal Court, there was not a real defined Equestrian Order, with privilege and duties established by regulation, in fact the investiture didn’t always have an official mantle and insignia. In 1520 the Pontiff Leone X founded The Order of Saint Peter, the first Honorary Institute of The Order of Saint Peter. Made up of 401 knights of various parts of The Apostolic Chancellery. The Title of Honour consisted of a medal. The Knights offered sums of money to The Holy See, and in exchange they received honours and income.

    Archbishop Bathersby celebrates 25th Episcopal Anniversary The Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, Most Rev John Bathersby, has marked the 25th Anniversary of his Episcopal ordination. A Thanksgiving Mass was held in a full Cathedral of St Stephen on March 24 to celebrate the occasion, with attending dignitaries including the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley; the Deputy Premier, Mr Paul Lucas, and the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Mr Campbell Newman. The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, and around 27 brother Bishops and colleagues from around Australia and New Zealand were also present, along with parishioners and students from Catholic schools. Archbishop Bathersby was ordained Bishop of Cairns in March 1986, an appointment that allowed him to concelebrate Mass with John Paul II at QEII stadium for what was the Pontiff’s first ever Australian papal visit. He became Archbishop of Brisbane in December 1991. A special papal blessing from Pope Benedict XVI, in honour of the milestone, was recently received by the Archbishop. This being his 75th year (his birthday is in July), the Archbishop must notify the Holy See he has reached the required retirement age. In due course the Pope will appoint a successor. The president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Philip Wilson, preached the homily at the Thanksgiving Mass. In a message especially penned for this weekend’s The Catholic Leader, Archbishop Wilson paid tribute to Archbishop Bathersby as both a friend and mentor. “Archbishop Bathersby has made a very distinguished contribution to the life of the Catholic Church in Australia through his work as a priest of the Diocese of Toowoomba, his further involvement with the regional seminary in Brisbane and his ministries as Bishop of Cairns and Archbishop of Brisbane,” Archbishop Wilson said.
