The Northside Achievement Zone Development Director

The Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) Development Director position is an opportunity to apply your experience as a senior leader in development to an organization that is engaging in deeply meaningful work. Position Overview: NAZ is growing to enroll 1,000 North Minneapolis families, and the Development Director plays a key role in sustaining our “college to career” supports over the long term. This is a senior leadership position within the organization, reporting to the President and CEO.

The Development Director is directly responsible for operation of all components of the fundraising program. This includes leading development and implementation of a comprehensive resource development strategy to increase individual gifts and foundation/corporate giving.

The Development Director has a unique opportunity to help shape a sustainable investment model that has the potential to become a national example for low-income communities.

The Development Director works with a team to retain and significantly expand philanthropic support for NAZ. This team includes the President and CEO, the Development Committee, the Sustainability Taskforce, the , and the NAZ leadership team. In addition, the Development Director will oversee a staff of two (Grants Manager/writer and a Development Associate).

Successful candidates will have skills needed to support the Board and Sustainability Task Force, manage and develop relationships with donors, and have the hands-on experience to understand and successfully direct the Development Department in all aspects of the development process.

NAZ is expanding rapidly and we are currently in a startup environment. Our staff are known to do whatever it takes to support our families. Ideal candidates will be excited about building the department’s infrastructure and developing a strategy to meet our short-term revenue goals in a way that builds toward the long-term revenue capacity of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities: • Develop and implement an ambitious and achievable resource development plan encompassing individuals, , foundations, organizations and government institutions. • Cultivate, maintain and steward relationships with current and potential donors to deepen their relationships with NAZ. • Develop and maintain policies and procedures within the Development Department to ensure efficient, ethical and sound practices for resource development. • Coordinate the activities of the Resource Development function with the relevant NAZ departments and staff. • Participate in the budgeting process to determine annual and capital development goals, then achieve and surpass these goals in all areas. • Oversee the full utilization of the NAZ donor database (Donor Perfect) ensuring that all relevant information is appropriately tracked and reported, including donor and prospect records, prospect research, appointment schedules, and development progress reports. • In partnership with the NAZ board and staff, instill a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization in achievement of its mission.

Oversee the following processes that your staff will execute: o Oversee all aspects of the grant research, application, and reporting processes to insure successful adherence to all grant requirements. o Develop and oversee special events that highlight achievements and strengthen the relationship of NAZ with current and potential donors. o In addition to financial resources, oversee development of resources critical to the NAZ mission, including volunteer recruitment and management, and in-kind professional services and materials.

Qualifications: • BA degree required. • Minimum of 5 years of successful hands-on experience in individual giving, and foundation grants, government funding, and database/information management. Special consideration for those with experience in social service activities. • Excellent written and presentation skills. Ability to write, proofread, and edit. • Excellent organizational and managerial skills, including goal setting and adherence to external guidelines and deadlines. • Ability to occasionally write grants, if needed due to staff capacity. • Ability to excel in a results-oriented environment, meeting and exceeding agreed-upon goals and deadlines. • Event management experience. • Experience successfully overseeing many complex projects simultaneously.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with foundations, corporations, funders, and individual donors. • Knowledge of fundraising marketing strategies and techniques. • Excellent managerial skills. • Ability to handle heavy workload, manage details, able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines. • Ability to work effectively with all departments/staff of NAZ. • Ability to work with high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, Access and Outlook. Knowledge of Donor Perfect database system is a plus. • Commitment to the expectation that children growing up in North Minneapolis can succeed in academics and college. • Ability to work effectively with volunteers. • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a variety of people and groups and to represent NAZ effectively.
