A través de esta regulación, se ha ido generando cierta normatividad y se han construido socialmente categorías fijas partiendo de nociones heredadas sobre lo que es femenino, y sobre lo que es masculino. El objetivo general de esta tesis doctoral es indagar sobre algunas posibles herramientas pedagógicas que permitan desmantelar esta serie de construcciones estereotipadas sobre los géneros, con la finalidad de evidenciar que se trata de nociones que limitan la cotidianidad de hombres y mujeres, tratando de definirlos y generando múltiples formas de discriminación y violencia. He construido un ensamblaje de marcos teóricos: me apoyo en las Teorías Queer, en los Estudios de Performance, en los Estudios de la Cultura Visual y en las Pedagogías Críticas y Feministas. Con estas bases he podido explorar mi punto de partida: el drag como recurso educativo y artístico. Pero sobretodo he podido pensar, estructurar y llevar a cabo el trabajo de campo a través de dos talleres que cuestionan y tratan de deconstruir los roles de género mediante la cultura visual y la expresión corporal. Me ha sido necesaria una metodología de investigación híbrida, que me ha permitido navegar entre las herramientas etnográficas, narrativas y explorar los nuevos materialismos feministas. Finalmente he concluido que se configura como fundamental, una apuesta por la educación en todas sus formas y posibilidades, para que el trabajo de deconstrucción en torno a los roles de género sea lo más capilar posible, y pueda llegar especialmente a los más jóvenes. Conceptos clave: roles de género, Teoría Queer, cultura visual, educación, metodología híbrida Body and visual culture in the deconstruction of gender roles Abstract Gender roles work, from a constructivist and feminist perspective, as regulators of the feminine and the masculine. Through this regulation, a certain normativity has been generated and categories have been socially built as fixed, based on inherited notions about what is feminine, and about what is male. The general objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate some possible pedagogical tools that allow to dismantle this series of stereotyped constructions genders, with the purpose of evidencing that they are notions that limit the daily life of men and women, trying to define them and generating multiple forms of discrimination and violence. I have built an assemblage of theoretical frameworks: I rely on queer theories, in Performance studies, in visual culture studies and in critical and feminist pedagogies. With these bases I have been able to explore my starting point: the drag as an educational and artistic resource. But above all I have been able to think, structure and carry out fieldwork through two workshops that question and try to deconstruct gender roles through visual culture and body expression. I have needed a hybrid research methodology, which has allowed me to navigate between the ethnographic, narrative tools and to explore the new feminist materialisms. Finally, I concluded that it is fundamental to establish a commitment to education in all its forms and possibilities, so that the work of deconstruction around the gender roles is as capillary as possible, and can reach especially the youngest. A través d'aquesta regulació, s'ha anat generant certa normativitat i s'han construït socialment categories fixes partint de nocions heretades sobre el que és femení, i sobre el que és masculí. L'objectiu general d'aquesta tesi doctoral és indagar sobre algunes possibles eines pedagògiques que permetin desmantellar aquesta sèrie de construccions estereotipades sobre els gèneres, amb la finalitat d'evidenciar que es tracta de nocions que limiten la quotidianitat d'homes i dones, tractant de definir-los i generant múltiples formes de discriminació i violència. He construït un acoblament de marcs teòrics: em suport en les teories queer, en els estudis de Performance, en els estudis de la cultura visual i en les pedagogíes críticas i feministas. Amb aquestes bases he pogut explorar el meu punt de partida: el drag com a recurs educatiu i artístic. Però sobretot he pogut pensar, estructurar i dur a terme el treball de camp a través de dos tallers que qüestionen i intenten deconstruir els rols de gènere mitjançant la cultura visual i de l'expressió corporal. M'ha calgut una metodologia d'investigació híbrida, que m'ha permès navegar entre les eines etnográficas, narratives i explorar els nous materialismes feministas. Finalment he conclòs que es configura com a fonamental, una aposta per l'educació en totes les seves formes i possibilitats, perquè el treball de desconstrucció entorn dels rols de gènere sigui el més capil·lar possible, i pugui arribar especialment als més joves. The research has been completed as creative production and exegesis, and both products address the central research question. In the introductory chapter I contextualise the theatrical history of male-to-female drag beginning with the Ancient Greek stage, and foreground faux queens as the subject of investigation. I also outline the methodology employed, including practice-led research, autoethnography, and in-depth interview, and provide a summary of each chapter and the creative production Agorafaux-pas! - A drag cabaret. The introduction presents the cultural implications of faux queens that are also explored in the chapters and creative production.

    The Queer, Drag Performance: Senith And The Faux Queen In Italy Michela Baldo [email protected] This article is centred on the faux queen experimental theatre by Italian artist Senith, and on the links between this theatre and queer feminist activism in Italy. Senith is a queer drag performer from Rome, and the co-founder of the former queer drag king group Eyes Wild Drag. After the group disbanded in 2015, Senith has been performing as a solo artist in shows such as BAD ASSolo (2016) and Lo Schizzo (2017) [Squirting]. She has also been developing, transforming and enriching projects originally born within Eyes Wild Drag such as the Erotic Lunch and the Queerrida. The article will concentrate on Senith’s faux queen experimentations, trying to understand how the genre is translated/adapted for the Italian scenario and what Senith is trying to achieve with it. In doing so the article will discuss the notion of queer femininity, otherwise known as Fem or femme (Serano 2007; Dahl 2009), its genealogy within lesbian feminism, and the connection between the themes developed by faux queen performances in general and those discussed in queer transfeminist activist scenarios in Italy. These are, in particular, the invisibility of the Fem, misogyny, slut-shaming, sexism, and women’s control over their body and sexuality.     Fe/Male Performance Agata Szuba 164 165 The term gender refers to sex-based social constructs, and perfor- mance referring gender presents diverse incarnations of the artists, and depending on their sex it also answers the question – who in the situation of performance realizations are a woman and a man. The perception of gender constructs due to development of pop culture’s presentations has changed, repeatedly contradictive to the biological nature of a human. In the times of pervasive presence of an image, open access to the internet and at the same time, a constantly gro- wing need to update them – humans achieved freedom to individu- ally define themselves and their identity. Artists always possessed stronger ways of expressions, with the ability to refer to the given world and diverse interpretations of it. They manipulated their per- sona, referring to social roles forced to people of different sex. Through the years gender was an ideological product due to mul- tiway artistic movements, such as LGBT+ groups (Lesbian, Gay, Bise- xual, Transgender+) and became an individual decision of a human – the one closest to their feeling of identity. The artist could, then, create different identities and depending on the occasion, become each of it. The current popularity of the term gender is undoubtedly an asset, even more so because it allows inclusion of art into a wide- spread social debate confronting crucial terminology of civilization with the individual interpretation of the artist.1 The motif of a mask (understood in a broad sense), i.e. a way of transformation for the artist had a particular meaning within the context of the battle with human gender.

I analyze the notion of drag as gender performance and consider key questions regarding drag as an artistic practice and medium: drag as a form of cross-dressing; drag’s subject matter; the similarities and differences between drag and fe/male impersonation; and drag’s relation to gender, par- ticularly nonbinary genders and cis-heteronormative gender ontology.     1 RuPaul’s Drag Race and the Toronto Drag Scene Russ Martin, Bachelor of Journalism Popular Culture Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Social Sciences, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario © 2020 2 For the drag artists who taught me to re-think gender. 3 Abstract The debut of the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race (Barbato, Bailey, and Charles) in 2009 marked the start of a new drag boom. The program’s commercial success throughout the 2010s brought drag performance into the mainstream cultural arena, prompting a host of effects on the historically grassroots culture of drag. This thesis project explores the show’s impact on one particular geographic community, the Toronto drag scene, which has been active in some capacity for at least 70 years. This ethnographic study is drawn from a year and a half in the field in the Toronto drag scene and a series of semi-structured interivews with nine research participations who took part in the 2018 edition of the Toronto-based drag pageant Crews and Tangos Drag Race. Using this group as a case study, this thesis demonstrates how Drag Race has influenced both the politics and aesthetics of the Toronto drag scene. Drawing from scholar Will Straw’s work on scene theory, I argue Drag Race now acts as global drag culture’s dominant system of articulation (Systems 369) and that it not only dictates trends in drag, but also provides the contemporary drag fan a rubric for understanding drag’s cultural meaning.
