The Seminar was part of the Montgomery Arts Guild, an organization which was active in promoting and sponsoring cultural events. Held during July, the Seminar hosted readings by notable poets, offered creative writing workshops, held creative writing contests, and featured musical performances. -

Imprint:Oregon 1°A S Fall-Spring 1978-1979 °M z-i William Everson Waldport: an Interview with William Everson Introduction During World War II the problem of what to do with conscientious objectors who refused to engage in certain types of moreor less war-related work was resolved by the establishment of so-called ConscientiousObjectors Camps, more formallyCivilian Public Service Camps. They were sponsored by the "peace churches,"the Brethren, Mennonite and American Friends Service Committee. By 1945 there were more than 110 such camps and sub-camps throughout the United States. The origins and pur- poses of these camps are well described in the interview which follows. There were three such camps in Oregon: No. 21 (Cascade Locks) opened Dec. 5, 1941: No.56 (Waldport) opened Oct. 24, 1942: No.59 (Elkton) opened Nov.?, 1942. All were engaged in forest maintenance directed by the U. S. Forest Service or by the Oregon and California Revested Lands Administration, Such work consisted of tree planting, blister rust control, fire fighting and trail building, a continuation, essenti- ally, of work done formerly by the receniiy defunct Civilian Conservation Corps. In the usual manner of all such camps, the CO camps produced house organs, usual- ly weekly or monthly mimeographed newspapers. These papers were sponsoredand encouraged by the camp administration itself. winch regarded them as a harmless and even useful outlet for expression. There were, however, some exceptions tothis expec- tation. Among Oregon camps, for example, there wasa proliferation of camp newspapers out of Elkton. This may be partially explainedbythe fact that Elkton was operated as aheadquarters camp and sent contingentsto sub-camps located as far south as Kiam. -

His formal education eeied after only two years of high scnool. He spent the next years of his life wandering from job to job, spending the war years with the R.C.A.F. He spent some time on the West Coast and in 1956 be returned east.. He has received Canada Council Grants wbich enabled him to t ravel into the interior of British Columbia (1960) and to Baffin Island (1965) and a tour of Greece (1967). He has published 10 books of poetry and edited three books, and has contributed to various magazines. HALL A QUARTERLY OF CRITICISM AND R6VI6W AN ABSENCE OF UTOPIAS LIITERATURES are defined as much by their lacks as by their abundances, and it is obviously significant that in the whole of Canadian writing there has appeared only one Utopian novel of any real interest; it is significant in terms of our society as much as of our literature. The book in question is A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder. It was written in the 1870's and published in 1888, eight years after the death of its author, James de Mille, a professor of English at Dalhousie, who combined teach- ing with the compulsive production of popular novels ; by the time of his death at the age of 46 he had already thirty volumes to his credit, but only A Strange Manuscript has any lasting interest. Canadian Studies. Language and Literature MARVIN ORBACH, MERLE AMODEO: CANADIAN POETS, UNIVERSAL POETS M.Sc. Miguel Ángel Olivé Iglesias. Associate Professor. University of Holguín, Cuba Abstract This paper aims at revealing universality in Marvin Orbach, an outstanding Canadian book collector and poet, and Merle Amodeo, an exquisite Canadian poet and writer. Orbach´s poems were taken from Redwing, book published by CCLA Hidden Brook Press, Canada in 2018; and Amodeo´s poems from her book After Love, Library of Congress, USA, 2014. Thus, the paper unveils for the general reader the transcendental scope of these two figures of Canadian culture. In view of the fact that they are able to recreate and memorialize their feelings and contexts where they live, and show their capacities to discern beyond the grid of nature, society and human experience, directly and masterfully exposing them, it can be safely stated that both Orbach and Amodeo reach that point where what is singular in them acquires universality, and in return what is universal crystallizes in their singularity. I enjoyed great English and American classics so much that I even memorized many of their poems. It proved very useful later in my professional career, as I would read excerpts from poems to my students in class. Canada, and Canadian poets, had less presence on the curricular map at the time. Fortunately, I had the chance to become acquainted with Canadian poetry through the Canada Cuba Literary Alliance (CCLA), founded by Richard and Kimberley Grove back in 2004. -

Your project must have a Canadian theme such as history, geography or heritage whether it is local, national or international. Your teacher will also have certain guidelines which you will need to follow. This booklet has been created to facilitate research for Heritage Fair projects. This guide contains research tips, sources of information, and sample topics. RESEARCH TIPS Getting started Identify a topic. This should be something of interest to you. Be as specific as possible, but be prepared to broaden your topic, especially if it is not truly regional. See Sample Topics. Give yourself plenty of time. Research takes time and sometimes you have to start over if there is not enough information available on your topic. Schedule your time to work on the project especially if working with a partner. Make an outline. Your outline is your strategy. Develop a series of questions relating to the information you need to find. Use these questions to organize and plan your research. It is a good idea to list keywords related to your topic (this will help in catalogue and online searches). Make a list of possible sources of information. Use a variety of sources but try to limit Internet and anecdotal sources. Browse general sources such as encyclopedias and handbooks to gather some background information on your topic. -

Archive from “A Secret Location” Small Press / Mimeograph Revolution, 1940s–1970s We are pleased to offer for sale a captivating and important research collection of little magazines and other printed materials that represent, chronicle, and document the proliferation of avant-garde, underground small press publications from the forties to the seventies. The starting point for this collection, “A Secret Location on the Lower East Side,” is the acclaimed New York Public Library exhibition and catalog from 1998, curated by Steve Clay and Rodney Phillips, which documented a period of intense innovation and experimentation in American writing and literary publishing by exploring the small press and mimeograph revolutions. The present collection came into being after the owner “became obsessed with the secretive nature of the works contained in the exhibition’s catalog.” Using the book as a guide, he assembled a singular library that contains many of the rare and fragile little magazines featured in the NYPL exhibition while adding important ancillary material, much of it from a West Coast perspective. Small press publications from the forties through the seventies have increasingly captured the interest of scholars, archivists, curators, poets and collectors over the past two decades. They provide bedrock primary source information for research, analysis, and exhibition and reveal little known aspects of recent cultural activity. The Archive from “A Secret Location” was collected by a reclusive New Jersey inventor and offers a rare glimpse into the diversity of poetic doings and material production that is the Small Press Revolution. -

Its sheer length, both in time of composition and page range, as well as its reach, in its thematic inclusion and incorporated written styles, constitute its demanding and comprehensive form. Critics have neglected to examine the poem as a work preoccupied with the philosophy of ontology—the study of being—through a literary mode of longing. -

Volume 10 Issue 1 May 2014 Kenneth patchen’s poetics of pain Mark Silverberg david Morris (1991), the eminent theorist of pain’s historical and cultural life, has argued that chronic pain may well be the “characteristic mal - ady of our time” (pp. 65-66), as leprosy and plague were for the medieval world, madness for the renaissance, and tuberculosis for the romantic era. 1 if this is the case, then American poet Kenneth patchen, long consigned to the dust - bin of literary history, may well be one of our rep - resentative or defining poets. patchen’s last poems, issued from the bed of the disabled poet and col - lected in three volumes, Hallelujah Anyway (1967), But Even So (1968), and Wonderings (1971), shape a provocative visual language for the chronic pain that framed his life and silently rav - aged his body. this essay is a journey into what i will call patchen’s “poetics of pain,” that is, the productive literary and visual strategies that al - lowed the artist to give voice to his own suffering and at the same time to open a window on what Morris calls the “representative illness” (p. 65) of our era. 13 John Bonica, the father of the modern interdiscipli - nary pain clinic, was among the first to understand chronic pain as a distinct medical condition, separate from (though connected to) acute pain. While acute pain arises suddenly as the result of a specific injury and disappears after a period of treatment and healing, chronic pain persists after normal recovery should have occurred.
