The paintings of Aubrey Williams are islands of fire that have scorched their way across a range of different stories of art. One story is about the evolution of British painting in the twentieth century. Another is a story about the way in which Caribbean people have struggled and pressed for their freedom and sparked with modern creativity. Yet another story has passages on Britain and Guyana, Jamaica, South America, and the United States, pulling in all those settings around the Atlantic where Aubrey Williams lived and worked, and where he exhibited his art. It is a story about how Williams had an ability to be in several places at once in the history of art. Williams’ legacy is framed within a brilliant composite of narratives; and there his art works have remained, smouldering continually, their heat slowly building. His life story and his art cannot be located in a simple geography, either physical or cultural. Williams painted with fire, and the path that he cut is a hard one to follow. First, Williams was a full and energetic participant in the London art world of the post-war years.

    New Directions in Black British Art History Some Considerations Eddie Chambers ime was, or at least time might have been, when the writing or assembling of black British art histories was a relatively uncom- Tplicated matter. Historically (and we are now per- haps able to speak of such a thing), the curating or creating of black British art histories were for the most part centered on correcting or addressing the systemic absences of such artists. This making vis- ible of marginalized, excluded, or not widely known histories was what characterized the first substantial attempt at chronicling a black British history: the 1989–90 exhibition The Other Story: Asian, African, and Caribbean Artists in Post-War Britain.1 Given the historical tenuousness of black artists in British art history, this endeavor was a landmark exhibi- tion, conceived and curated by Rasheed Araeen and organized by Hayward Gallery and Southbank Centre, London. Araeen also did pretty much all of the catalogue’s heavy lifting, providing its major chapters. [email protected] ABSTRACT This study explored the history of accounting and evolution of accounting standard in Nigeria in relation to the country’s adoption of the IFRS. The similarities and differences between the IFRS and the Nigerian local standard (SAS) were reviewed as well. The study was an exploratory research which made use of purely secondary data from extant literatures in the relevant area of interest; hence the explorative design method was adopted in conducting this research. It was observed that the IFRS is more robust and principle base, thus giving room for a sense of discretion on the part of preparers of financial statements. The study concludes by reiterating the importance of adopting IFRS which enables a country to speak a uniform accounting language as her other counterparts. KEYWORDS: Accounting, IFRS, SAS, History, Nigeria, Language 1. Introduction The story of the tower of Babel signified that anything can be achieved when there is uniformity in language. In this same vein, the evolution of accounting (seen as the language of business) strives towards “a uniform language” which is the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards in many countries of the world. Regulation of accounting information is aimed at ensuring that users of financial statement receive a minimum amount of information that will enable them make meaningful decisions regarding their interest in a reporting entity.
