YL’s have been really busy in the last month, not only within their Sections but also at training events. Four YL’s have completed a 16 hour first aid courses, and 19 attended the training weekend where modules A-J were covered. They were a credit to themselves and their Groups. Also 4 YL’s who have completed their training came along to help out as training facilitators and were fantastic and really helped the weekend go smoothly. There is a module A on the 6 March at Tangier 7.30-9.30. I am aware there are a few new YL’s out there who need to attend this session, so please encourage them to come along. The other major YL event coming up is a camp at Huish Woods where we will be doing camping skills and some site work from 30th March to the 2nd April. Again please encourage your YL’s to come along, even if it is for some of the time fitting in around coursework, exam revision and work etc. If you have any questions relating to YL’s, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Lyn – ESL (YL) 31 WEST MONKTON CUBS went to Taunton Fire Station and had a fantastic night. The evening closed with an investiture with a difference. Thanks to Andy and White Watch for entertaining us all evening. 7 teams from 6 Troops took part in this year’s SCOUT 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL competition at The Princess Royal Centre in Wellington. Some very classy football was played with many fantastic goals and superb saves and all played with excellent spirit. The winners were West Taunton with 16 points very closely followed by Wilton Wanderers with 15 points and Wellington on 11 points. The competition was very close right until the end. Well done to all of you. The next event is the FIELD AND RIFLE SHOOT at Huish Woods on the 25th March. GRAHAM BELL WELLINGTON - Roly Weaver, Hazel & Steve Altria have been touring their local primary Schools informing the pupils of the benefits of Scouting during the month. Along with others asking to join Scouting 40 young people have joined Wellington Group in 2012. After an initial planning meeting with each Head teacher Steve obtained permission from the secondary school to have older scouts released so they could run activities on the school visits. Each visit was tailored to the schools specific requirement but year 1 and 2 (i.e. Beaver age) were targeted. After a short presentation by Steve the pupils undertook activities in rotation (each activity was from a different zone of the Beaver programme) run by a Scout, Roly or Hazel. We used both "on brand" pull up and equipment displays (tents, kayaks, climbing ropes, grass sledges etc etc), handouts and posters obtained from Gilwell. Existing members were permitted to wear they uniform to school that day. At each school we also had a display area and we stayed on to chat to parents who had been pre-invited via the school heads newsletter. From these we also picked up new Cubs and Scouts. I would encourage you to do this; please don’t be put off by being full. The days were interesting and fun to run and we are now aiming to encourage some of their parents to become leaders. Steve is already talking to one! .

  • A History of St. Michael's Church
A history of St. Michael’s Church Creech St. Michael St. Michael's Church in Creech St. Michael The ancient church of St. Michael stands above the flood plain of the River Tone, in the village of Creech St. Michael near Taunton in Somerset. The church has been standing on this site since at least the 13th century, not only experiencing, but also reflecting, the changes of over 700 years. In 2013 the village of Creech St. Michael is growing fast with on-going new development. It sits just 2 miles from junction 25 of the M5 and 3 miles east from the county town of Taunton. It boasts a number of local industries and a range of facilities. As it stands now the church building presents perhaps an unpretentious and unassuming vista on the edge of the village. In the 14th century it would have dominated the area and played a central role in village life. The early history of the village of Creech St. Michael is uncertain. It is likely that the name comes from the Old English “Muchel Critch” meaning “large creek” (differentiating this village from Little Creech near West Hatch). This seems to be partially confirmed by the fact that the church was dedicated to “All Saints” until at least 1532. It is thought that the title of “St. Michael” is possibly a later corruption of “Muchel”, from the Saxon word for “great” or “large” (this had happened by 1742). What is certain is that Creech St. Michael was a thriving village under the name of Critch or Muchel Critch in the 11th century when William 1 (the Conqueror) commissioned the Domesday Book.

  • Somerset Geology-A Good Rock Guide
SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.
