The interview took place in Sargentville, Maine, and was conducted by Robert Brown for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview February 13, 1976. ROBERT BROWN: Could you begin, perhaps, by just sketching out a bit of your childhood, and we can pick up from there. FREDERICK SWEET: I spent most of my early childhood in this house. My father, a doctor and tenth generation Rhode Islander, went out to Bisbee, Arizona, a wild-west copper-mining town, as the chief surgeon under the aegis of the Company. My mother always came East at pregnancy and was in New York visiting relatives when my father died very suddenly of cerebral hemorrhage. My mother was seven months pregnant with me. Since I was to be a summer baby, she ended up by coming to this house and being a cook and being a cook and a nurse with her there. The local doctor came and said nothing was going to happen for quite a long time and went off in his horse and buggy. I was promptly delivered by the cook and a nurse.

    David Zwirner New York London Hong Kong George Tooker Artist Biography George Tooker (1920–2011) is best known for his use of the traditional, painstaking medium of egg tempera in compositions reflecting urban life in American postwar society. Born in Brooklyn, he received a degree in English from Harvard University before he began his studies at the Art Students League in 1943, where he worked under the regionalist painter Reginald Marsh. In 1944, Tooker met the artist Paul Cadmus, and they soon became lovers. Cadmus, sixteen years his senior, introduced Tooker to the artist Jared French, with whom he was romantically involved, and French’s wife, Margaret Hoening French, and the four of them traveled extensively throughout Europe and vacationed regularly together. Tooker appears in a number of the photographs taken by PaJaMa, the photographic collective formed by Cadmus and the Frenches, and he served as a model for Cadmus’s painting Inventor (1946). Cadmus and French introduced Tooker to the time-intensive medium of egg tempera, which would become his principal medium. Tooker’s career found early success, due in part to his friend Lincoln Kirstein, the co-founder of the New York City Ballet, encouraging the inclusion of his work in the Fourteen Americans (1946) and Realists and Magic-Realists (1950) exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1950, Subway (1950) entered the Whitney Museum of American Art’s collection—the artist’s first museum acquisition—and the following year he received his first solo exhibition at the Edwin Hewitt Gallery. Near the end of the 1940s, Tooker parted ways with Cadmus because of the latter’s ongoing relationship with the Frenches.

Courtesy: ESSEX STREET, New York; photograph: Jason Mandella Lewis Stein, ‘Works from 1968–1979’ ESSEX STREET <https://frieze.com/event/lewis-stein> 29 October – 22 December 2017 Having found success as a painter in the 1960s, New York-based artist Lewis Stein went on to reconsider the readymade by cooly transplanting overlooked urban objects – a street lamp, stanchions, a wooden billy club – into the gallery. This show gathers key works from 1968 to 1979 and makes a compelling argument for revisiting Stein’s oeuvre. Stein separates the readymade from its Duchampian irony, revealing instead how everyday objects can guide visibility and delimit movement in a subtle and concise form of policing. The exhibition’s force resides less in the objects themselves than in their effect on the body of the viewer that must negotiate them, for example skirting a barrier (Untitled, c.1972) or squinting against a blinding street light (Untitled, c.1979–80). There’s a productive relationship to younger artists on the gallery’s roster, too, such as Park McArthur and Cameron Rowland, each of whom mine histories of control held within the seemingly benign. Fifty Years of Painting,” an energizing, deeply satisfying pair of shows devoted to the work of Gladys Nilsson that occupied both Matthew Marks’s Twenty-Fourth Street space, where it remains on view through April 18, and Garth Greenan Gallery, took its title from one of the earliest works on display: Honk, 1964, a tiny, Technicolor street scene in acrylic that focuses on a pair of elderly couples, which the Imagist made two years out of art school. The men, bearded and stooped, lean on canes, while the women sport dark sunglasses beneath their blue-and-chartreuse beehives. They are boxed in by four more figures: Some blank-eyed and grimacing, others skulking under fedoras pulled low. The scene might suggest a vague Kastner, Jeffrey. “Gladys Nilsson.” 58, no. 8, April 2020. Artforum kind of menace were it not for the little green noisemakers dangling from the bright-red lips of the central quartet, marking them as sly revelers rather than potential victims of some unspecified mayhem. The painting’s acid palette and thickly stylized figures obviously owe a debt to Expressionism, whose lessons Nilsson thoroughly absorbed during regular museum visits in her youth, but its sensibility is more Yellow Submarine than Blaue Reiter, its grotesquerie leavened with genial good humor. The Marks portion of the show focuses primarily on the first decade of Nilsson’s career, while Greenan’s featured works made in the past few years, the two constituent parts together neatly bookending the artist’s richly varied and lamentably underappreciated oeuvre.

The paint and brushes are but mere extensions of myself or scalpels if you wish. —Ivan Albright1 From the start of his career in the late 1920s, the Chicago-born painter Ivan Albright was praised by critics for his precise, meticulous forms and yet also reviled for his off- putting approach to the human figure. The Lineman(fig. 1), for example, which won the John C. Shaffer Prize for portraiture at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1928, sparked concern when it appeared on the cover of the trade magazine Electric Light and Power. A. B. Gates, a manager from the Edison Company, protested the lineman’s appearance as a “stoop-shouldered individual exuding an atmosphere of hopelessness and dejection,” explaining that the image failed to capture the strong, youthful stature of the typical modern American workman.2 Subsequent paintings from this period were not merely offensive; they were utterly revolting, as the artist approached his subjects with increasingly clinical detail.
