  • Exegesis of the Song of Songs with Comments from the Great American Songbook Robert Case Sunday School Class 2016 Faith Presbyterian Church
Exegesis of the Song of Songs with comments from The Great American Songbook Robert Case Sunday School Class 2016 Faith Presbyterian Church Part 10 “In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree” In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree is a 1905 popular song written by Harry Williams and Egbert Van Alstyne. It was one of the biggest hits of the early decade. The meter of its chorus is in the form of a limerick. As was fashionable at the time, it as a highly sentimental tune. In the1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, in the scene involving the talking apple trees who become angry with Dorothy for picking apples off them, the strains of this song are heard in the background. The original verses tell the story about a lost love: “In the shade of the old apple tree, Where the love in your eyes I could see, Where the voice that I heard, Like the song of a bird, Seemed to whisper sweet music to me, I could hear the dull buzz of the bee In the blossoms as you said to me, "With a heart that is true, "I'll be waiting for you, In the shade of the old apple tree." Mr. Van Alstyne wrote many popular songs during the early years of the 20th century including “Memories.” A song like this, dripping with sentiment even by early-1900s standards, lent itself to parodies. Popular recording artist, Billy Murray recorded the most popular one. The verse describes him passing by the house of Maggie Jones, a maiden "homelier than me", who asks him to fetch some apples on the promise of giving him one of the pies she plans to bake: “So I climbed up the old apple tree, For a pie was a real thing to me.

  • Johnson, Jay Cee (JC) Collection, 1896-1981
Jay Cee (J. C.) Johnson Collection (September 14, 1896-February 27, 1981) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Jay Cee (J. C.) Johnson, a Jazz and Pop composer, was often referred to as the “composer’s ‘composer.’” Johnson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1896, and died on Friday, February 27, 1981, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan (New York City), at the age of 84. He received early education in the Chicago Public School System. His mother, Ellen, and his father—who worked as a waiter on the railroad, was away from home most of the time—is unknown. J. C. expressed an interest in music at an early age, but his mother, who sang in the church choir, did not encourage her son to pursue a career in music. Later, while studying the violin, a friend began to give him piano lessons, and because of his attention dedication sounds better in learning to play, his mother decided that this would be his instrument of choice. At the age of 19, following the death of his mother, he moved to New York City, where he began to study piano with a man named Sam Patterson. Around 1920, he began to work as a session pianist, working with singers such as Ethel Waters, who sung in his first recorded hit titled “You Can’t Do What My Last Man Did,” and would go on to record many of his songs. Johnson would go on to compose more songs, including his first version of “Travel’ lin All Alone,” with Billie Holliday as vocalist (one of her first significant hit songs).

In Tune by Gary L. Johnston Inside Your Town December 2004 Santa Rides Covingtonian to the Songwriters Hall of Fame! Every child knows that, "You better watch out! You better not cry! You better not pout - I'm telling you why - Santa Claus is coming to town!" Those words, penned in 1934 by local Covington songwriter, Haven Gillespie (1888-1975), have circled the globe. At one point, the song was selling 25,000 copies per DAY, and made Gillespie a millionaire (in 1940s dollars!) from royalties alone. James Lamont Haven Gillespie was one of the great Tin Pan Alley songwriters, penning the lyrics to well over 700 songs, including You Go To My Head , Honey, Breezin' Along With the Breeze, That Lucky Old Sun, Drifting and Dreaming of You, and You're in Kentucky Sure As You're Born. In 1904 at the age of 16, Haven Gillespie left high school in Covington to become a newspaper typesetter for the now defunct Cincinnati Times Star. By 1908 he was a journalist for the New York Times and several other newspapers. It was then, at 20, that he began writing lyrics for vaudeville acts on Tin Pan Alley, and by 23 he was under contract with publisher Leo Feist, Inc. Gillespie collaborated with several other composers in the 1920s and 1930s, but the association with pianist and composer J. Fred Coots yielded his most memorable songs such as his 1938 tune, You Go To My Head. At age 46, Gillespie went to Manhattan to meet with his publisher right after attending his brother's funeral.
