Paddling,” from Debut Album, Bright Green Field, out May 7Th on Warp Records March 16, 2021 For Immediate Release Squid Present New Single, “Paddling,” From Debut Album, Bright Green Field, Out May 7th on Warp Records photo credit - Holly Whitaker “[‘Narrator’ is] one of the most exciting rock payoffs in recent memory.” - Entertainment Weekly “I think this could be post-punk record of the year.” - The Needle Drop "[‘Narrator’] transforms from arty punk-funk to noise-laced passages that could almost be pretty in their melancholy if not for how Oliver Judge and Martha Skye Murphy push their voices to unnerved, shredded limits.” - Stereogum, Best Songs of the Week “[Bright Green Field is] wildly imaginative and expansive” - The FADER “‘Narrator’ may be their best track yet, as it encapsulates their offbeat horn-and-synth-laden post-punk, and also contains a patient, intensely melodic and almost ghostly unfurling of energy that will shake you to your core.” -- Paste, Best Songs of the Week Earlier this year, Squid announced the release of their much-anticipated debut album, Bright Green Field, out May 7th via Warp Records. Today, they present a new single, “Paddling,” which follows the release of “Narrator” (feat. Martha Skye Murphy), and announce an online performance as part of the official British Music Embassy SXSW showcase, airing Friday, March 19th at 6pm CDT. “Paddling” has long been a staple of Squid’s incendiary live show. This psych-motorik stomper is a reaction to being thrust into an adult world as friends suddenly turn their focus to careers. Built around a drum machine loop and pulsing synth line, sonic details pepper the track as it lurches between dynamic movements. All the while, the band members share vocal duties with an infectious ease and confidence. Squid elaborates: “Written from two different perspectives, ‘Paddling’ is a song about the dichotomy between simple pleasures and decadent consumerism. Recounting a familiar scene from The Wind in the Willows, the song reminds us that although we are humans, we are ultimately animals that are driven by both modern and primal instincts, leading to vanity and machismo around us in the everyday.” Listen to Squid’s “Paddling” Bright Green Field is an album of towering scope and ambition that endlessly twists down unpredictable avenues. Each member - Louis Borlase (guitars/vocals), Oliver Judge (drums/vocals), Arthur Leadbetter (keyboards/strings/ percussion), Laurie Nankivell (bass/brass) and Anton Pearson (guitars/vocals) - played an equal, vital role in the album’s creation. Written in Judge’s old local pub and recorded in producer Dan Carey’s London basement studio, it includes field recordings of ringing church bells, tooting bees, microphones swinging from the ceiling orbiting a room of guitar amps, a distorted choir of 30 voices as well as a horn and string ensemble featuring Emma-Jean Thackray and Lewis Evans from Black Country, New Road. Squid’s music - be it agitated and discordant or groove-locked and flowing - has often been a reflection of the tumultuous world we live in. As an album title, Bright Green Field conjures an almost tangible imagery of pastoral England. However, it’s something of a decoy that captures the band’s fondness for paradox and juxtaposition. Although the geography of Bright Green Field is an imaginary cityscape built from monolithic concrete buildings and dystopian visions, it’s also a joyous and emphatic record that marries the uncertainties of the world with a curious sense of exploration. • The Music Column That Wouldn't Die: New Album Reviews
The Music Column That Wouldn’t Die: New Album Reviews. I told myself I was over this, that I had retired from the world of music reviews. I had moved onto bigger and better things (mostly staring at the wall and wondering why nobody calls me anymore). Yet here I am, a mere few months after burning my bridges, giving up on new music and making a world of enemies, back in the game. Did I miss the constant abuse, the being paid in soiled pennies and the lack of recognition which writing this unremembered column entailed? Funnily enough, I did! It was listening to the post punk genius of the new Dry Cleaning record that did it. I thought to myself ‘someone has to take it upon themselves to tell the world just how good this album is’. After a moment of quiet reflection where I drank a glass of lukewarm Ribena to calm the nerves, I decided that that person may as well be me. By JOHN BITTLES So, here we are. Bittles’ Magazine, like some particularly bothersome zombie with a bad haircut and worse breath, has been reborn. And what a re-introduction we have! In this month’s reviews there is the art heavy punk funk strut of Squid, the melancholy dream pop of White Flowers, Thomas Fehlmann’s rich ambiance, the return of living legends The Coral, the skewed pop of Dntel, and Dry Cleaning of course. So, tell all your friends, phone the tabloids, and let us begin… New Long Leg by Dry Cleaning.

  • Pamphlets,” and Announce First-Ever US Tour
April 27, 2021 For Immediate Release Squid Present New Single, “Pamphlets,” and Announce First-Ever US Tour Debut Album, Bright Green Field, Out Next Friday, May 7th on Warp Records photo credit - Holly Whitaker Next Friday, May 7th, Squid will release their debut album, Bright Green Field, via Warp Records. Ahead of its release, they present a new single, “Pamphlets,” and announce their first-ever US tour. Squid have long been praised for their kinetic live shows, recently being named one of the best bands at SXSW 2021 by The New York Times and Paste. New single “Pamphlets” further previews this energy. It “concludes [Bright Green Field] with eight minutes of Can-ish skyward populsion - the delirious release which justifies all the foregoing tension” (MOJO). Squid drummer and lyricist Ollie Judge elaborates: “It’s about all the rubbish right-wing propaganda you get through your front door. It imagines a person with that as their only source of news being taken over by these pamphlets.” Listen to Squid’s “Pamphlets” Each single - “Pamphlets,” “Paddling,” and “Narrator” - shows that Bright Green Field is a debut of towering scope and ambition. Produced by Dan Carey, Bright Green Field is deeply considered, paced and intricately constructed. The five band members - Louis Borlase (guitars/vocals), Oliver Judge (drums/vocals), Arthur Leadbetter (keyboards/strings/ percussion), Laurie Nankivell (bass/brass) and Anton Pearson (guitars/vocals) - worked as a unit, playing an equal and vital role in its creation. Squid’s music has often been a reflection of the tumultuous world we live in. As an album title, Bright Green Field conjures an almost tangible imagery of pastoral England.

  • Bright Green Field

  • Why I Sing the Songs I Sing: an Exploration Into the Creative Strands That Contribute to My Performance of Song
Why I Sing the Songs I Sing: An exploration into the creative strands that contribute to my performance of song. Karan Casey PhD Arts Practice Supervisor: Dr Sandra Joyce Professor Mick Moloney Course Director: Professor Helen Phelan Submitted to the University of Limerick September 2019 1 2 Abstract Why I Sing the Songs I Sing: An exploration into the creative strands that contribute to my performance of song. Karan Casey This thesis explores my role as a creative female voice within Irish folk and traditional music, dealing with questions relating to my creative process, the performance of social justice, orality, performativity and social activism. My two PhD performances provide the central inherent intellectual and emotional contributions to the philosophical considerations that this thesis formulates. The first chapter is a road map outlining arts practice methodological and theoretical approaches, situating the research primarily in my performances and in my auto-ethnographic writing. Also introduced are the more traditional research methods of ethnographic interviews, data from archival work, panel discussions and a questionnaire. The cultural framework and background of traditional singing was interrogated in Chapter 2 and contextualised by an overview of the literature on Irish traditional and folk song. I specifically explored the origins of political folk song as it forms a central part of my repertoire. I utilized my performances to explore further how performativity, orality, arrangement and the reworking of the songs is deeply embedded in my creative process. Chapters 3 and 4 involve an intensive interrogation of my two performances. Chapter 3 focusses on my first performance of traditional, folk and self-composed songs.
