I began a tradition of featuring faculty soloists as well as winners of the annual student Concerto Competition, now with an award offered by Olivas Music, providing the orchestra the opportunity to perform significant concerto literature as well as learning the art of accompanying. In 2012, I developed a new chamber orchestra called the “UTEP Virtuosi” focusing on significant string orchestra repertoire. I initiated a concert featuring music in movies and for stage in which that music is presented and integrated via multimedia with lectures and video. It has become the capstone event for the year featuring the artistry of faculty soloists and comments per classical music used in movies and music composed exclusively for that medium. Each year six performances are scheduled. Repertoire for each year covers all eras and styles. -

“In the Mood”--Glenn Miller and His Orchestra (1939) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Dennis M. Spragg (guest post)* “The Anthem of the Swing Era” On August 1, 1939, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra recorded the Joe Garland composition “In the Mood” for RCA Bluebird records. It became a top-selling record that would be permanently associated with Miller and which has become the easily recognized “anthem of the swing era.” “In the Mood” appears to have been inspired by several earlier works from which the tune was developed. Once composed, it remained a “work in progress” until recorded by Miller. The first indication of a composition with elements resembling what would become “In the Mood” was “Clarinet Getaway,” recorded by the Jimmy O’Bryant Washboard Wonders in 1925 for Paramount records. It is matrix number P-2148 and was issued as Paramount 12287. It was paired with a tune titled “Back Alley Rub.” The recording was made by a four-piece band with Arkansas native O’Bryant playing clarinet and accompanied by a piano, cornet and washboard player. Following O’Bryant, similar themes were evident in the Wingy Manone recording of “Tar Paper Stomp.” Manone’s recording is considered the genesis of “In the Mood” by most jazz historians. The recording is by Barbeque Joe and his Hot Dogs, the name under which Manone recorded at the time. Manone recorded “Tar Paper Stomp” on August 28, 1930, for the Champion label (which was acquired by Decca in 1935). Reissues credit the record to Wingy Manone and his Orchestra. -

SPRAGG December 2017 Dedicated To The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Clarinda, Iowa An Historic Collaboration Jerry Gray (Generoso Graziano) Discovering the Pearls Arranger Jerry Gray (Generoso Graziano) was born in Boston, Massachusetts July 3, 1915. He was a virtuoso violinist, arranger and ultimately a bandleader. By 1939, Gray was the chief arranger and musical collaborator for Artie Shaw, the clarinet superstar who lead the top dance band in the United States. During that very important year in musical history, Glenn Miller’s band was coming on fast as a competitor to Shaw and other leading bands led by. among others, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. During the summer and early fall of 1939, Artie Shaw became disenchanted with the music business and was the subject of a public controversy regarding his pointedly negative opinion of “jitterbugs”. Some of Shaw’s musicians and arranger Gray became concerned that their employer might soon disband to take a break and possibly reorganize in 1940. The talented drummer Buddy Rich accepted a job offer from Tommy Dorsey and effervescent saxophonist and vocalist Tony Pastor was rumored to be exploring the idea of forming his own band. Meanwhile, Glenn Miller was employing brilliant arranger Bill Finegan and free lancers including Jimmie Lunceford’s protégé Eddie Durham. Miller needed full-time arranging skill and this led the bandleader to seek out the possibly available and eminently qualified Jerry Gray, who was arguably the best arranger available. As it turned out, Artie Shaw walked off the bandstand at the Hotel Pennsylvania’s Café Rouge in November 1939. -

Foreword By Harry Lillis “Bing” Crosby (1904-1977) “As the years go by, I am increasingly grateful that I was a tiny part of the era of the great swing bands. This was the golden age of popular music for me. They were all great, but I have to think that the Glenn Miller band was the greatest. Unlike so many of the others, Glenn was not a virtuoso instrumental soloist. And so instead of his horn he did it with great personnel and innovative harmonic experiments producing a sound that was his and his alone. Glenn employed a harmonization that was new and vastly different. If I even attempted a description of what he did, I would be immediately adrift. I think it was the way he voiced his instruments. It was just beautiful. And when you heard the sound, it was recognizable and memorable. It was just Glenn Miller. Glenn as a person was just as memorable. He was a very good personal friend, from the early days on, ever since he performed on some of the records I made with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra during the early stages of my career. During World War II we were united for the last time, when I sang in London with his great AAF Orchestra. -

GLENN MILLER’S MEMORIAL GRAVESTONE b Glenn Miller’s Connection to New Haven In 1943 and 1944, Glenn Miller made personal appearances in New Haven and also in East Hartford, Hartford, Meriden, Middletown, New London, Norwalk, Stamford, Wallingford and Westville. Glenn Miller and his orchestra performed in New Haven from March 27, 1943 to June 19, 1944. He made personal appearances at War Bond Drives on the New Haven Green, enlisted men’s dances at Yale, a War Bond Drive in Woolsey Hall (May 31, 1943), New Haven Airport, an aaf Recruiting Show at the Shubert Theater (June 23, 1943), a wedding in one of Yale’s chapels, the Yale Bowl, on the Old Campus, the Roger Sherman Theater, the New Haven Arena, Loew’s Pole Theater, the Yale Drama School Theater, and Eagle Hall. The Glenn Miller Orchestra’s very first concert in Woolsey Hall was on May 29, 1943. The orchestra, or band, was activated on March 20, 1943, with its permanent station at Yale University. Its first official name was The 418th Army Air Forces Band and was also known as “the Yale Band,” Glenn Miller’s Band, the “I Sustain the Wings” Band, and the aaf Radio Band. Glenn Miller’s Memorial Gravestone 1 The group settled down on Temple Street and rehearsed both military and dance music. They played during many cadet luncheons in Woolsey Hall. A fair number of local residents who are ‘of a certain age’ remember listening to the band’s rehearsals while they stood on the sidewalks outside its rehearsal hall as well as watching the band march to the New Haven Green. -

On March 1, 1904 Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa. At the age of 11 Glenn was given his first trombone and played in the Grant City, Missouri town band. In high school, Glenn become very interested in a new sound called dance band music. Glenn and some classmates decided to start their own band. Glenn was so excited about this new dance band music that when it came time for his graduation in 1921, he skipped his graduation ceremonies to play in his band. An opportunity opened up through which Glenn could play in the Holly Moyer Orchestra in Boulder and earn enough money to attend the University of Colorado. This lasted for two years, but in 1924, Glenn’s musical ambition, and a new job with the Tommy Watkins Orchestra, caused him to discontinue his college education so that he could spend full time playing and arranging music. Hearing of numerous opportunities, Glenn eventually headed for Los Angeles. While playing with the Ben Pollack Orchestra, Glenn roomed with another rising star, a clarinetist from Chicago named Benny Goodman. During the late 1920s and early 1930s Glenn organized, managed arranged music for and played trombone in big bands in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City. In 1934, he helped the Dorsey brothers to organize their first full-time big band. Finally, in 1937, Glenn decided to fulfill his dream and organize his own big band. In March of 1939, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was chosen to play the summer season at the prestigious Glen Island Casino, in New Rochelle, New York. -
