Late Summer School 2016 Excursions "Discover the region" excursion on 24 September 2016 (for all new students, international exchange students and refugees) You will visit a regional company, ride on the Kalimandscharo – a snow-white mountain of salt spoil offering imposing views – and learn interesting facts about Magdeburg's waterway junction on a tour. Travel arrangements: bus tour departs 08:30 from the campus of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (rear courtyard behind building 9, see campus map), return approx. 17:30 Food: Lunch and a soft drink will be provided in the canteen at K+S KALI GmbH There will be two buses for the tour, one of which will visit the destinations in reverse order. Cost: 27 euros Programme for the LSS 2016 "Discover the region" excursion (bus tour) (For new students, international exchange students and refugees) Saturday 24 September 2016 Times Destinations 08:15 Meet at the university car park 09:00 – 11:00 Factory tour at B.T. innovation GmbH This mid-sized company designs and manufactures innovative products for the construction and prefabricated concrete industry. Based in Magdeburg, the company supplies customers and distributors from North and South America, Africa and Europe, as well as many parts of Asia and Oceania. 12:00 – 12:30 Lunch in the canteen at the K+S KALI GmbH Zielitz plant 12:45 – 14:15 Bus ride on the Kalimandscharo The snow-white mountain of salt spoil at K+S KALI GmbH's Zielitz plant has the highest altitude between Magdeburg and the Baltic Sea. Known as the Kalimandscharo, this elevation provides an imposing view of huge forests and of Europe's largest waterway junction. 15:00 – 16:30 Magdeburg waterway junction Gigantic lift and lock constructions together with the world's largest trough bridge form the Magdeburg waterway junction. The trough bridge connects the Mittelland (Midland) Canal to the Elbe. The tour will start with a visit to the waterways development agency's information centre where a model will be used to explain how the structure works. We will then go to the ship lift and the water-saving lock, which are located in the Rothensee area of Magdeburg. Approx. 17:30 Arrive back at the university car park by bus The cost per participant is 27 euros, including lunch and a soft drink. Plan last updated: 29 July 2016 1 Late Summer School 2016 Subject-related excursion for the Health and Social Sciences on 24 September 2016 (only for new students starting programmes in Health Promotion and Management, Social Work and Sign Language Interpreting) You will visit the Freie Waldorfschule Magdeburg (a tour and open day at the Free Waldorf School Magdeburg) and will then travel to the Solepark spa in Schönebeck/Bad Salzelmen. There you will take a tour of the saline graduation works for salt production, climb the brine (salt water) tower and visit the demonstration salt boiling house. Travel arrangements: travel by train, meet at 09:30 at Magdeburg's central bus station (ZOB), return approx. 16:30 Food: You will be given a packed lunch containing fruit, a baguette sandwich and a drink. Cost: 15 euros Programme for the LSS 2016 subject-related excursion for the Health and Social Sciences (For new students starting programmes in Health Promotion and Management, Social Work and Sign Language Interpreting) Saturday 24 September 2016 Times Destinations 09:30 Meet at Magdeburg's central bus station (ZOB) 09:45 – 10:15 Travel by tram to Ambrosiusplatz, then walk to the Waldorf school 10:15 – 11:00 Free time at the Waldorf school open day 11:00 – 12:30 Tour on the theme of "Education for responsibility and freedom" The Freie Waldorfschule Magdeburg was founded in September 1990 and was the city's first independently operated 'free' school. The parents, teachers and pupils have succeeded in establishing a school of a high standard across all 13 class levels. They are supported by the Bund der Waldorfschulen (Association of Waldorf Schools), which has 233 German schools as members. The Waldorf schools in the federal states of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony collaborate at a regional conference. 12:30 – Walk and travel by tram as a group to Magdeburg's main train station (Hauptbahnhof) 1:00 pm Take the 13:12 service towards Schönebeck Bad-Salzelmen 13:30 – 15:30 Bad Salzelmen Courtyard of Art / tour of the saline graduation works Kunsthof Bad Salzelmen (the Bad Salzelmen Courtyard of Art) is a museum project, which includes a saline graduation works, brine tower, demonstration salt boiling house and a small exhibition. On this tour you will have the chance to scale the heights of the graduation works and tower, descend to the hidden Victoria Springs and admire the smallest pan salt works in Germany. Immerse yourself in a thrilling voyage of discovery into salt, saline and spa history. 15:44 Return journey to Magdeburg by train; arrive back in Magdeburg approx. 16:15 The cost per participant is 15 euros, including a packed lunch. 2 Late Summer School 2016 Subject-related excursion to MDR in Halle on 30 September 2016 (only for new students of journalism) Tour of the MDR radio broadcasting centre in Halle/Saale Travel arrangements: travel by train, meet at 09:15 in the entrance foyer of Magdeburg's main train station (Hauptbahnhof), return approx. 17:30 No refreshments provided Cost: 17 euros Programme for the LSS 2016 subject-related excursion to MDR's radio broadcasting centre in Halle (only for new students starting the programme of study in journalism) Friday, 30 September 2016 Times Destinations 09:15 Meet at Magdeburg's main train station (Hauptbahnhof) 09:37 – 10:45 Travel by train from Magdeburg to Halle/Saale as a group on a special Saxony-Anhalt ticket 10:45 – 11:15 Walk as a group to the MDR studios at Gerberstraße 2, 06108 Halle (Saale) 11:30 – 14:30 Tour of the MDR radio broadcasting centre in Halle Halle is the radio city of MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the Central German Broadcasting Corporation). Since 1999 the broadcaster has transmitted four supra- regional radio stations (MDR JUMP, MDR INFO, MDR FIGARO and MDR SPUTNIK) from the city on the River Saale. MDR KLASSIK, a digital radio station, was launched here in 2002. This building also has a studio for LANDESFUNKHAUS SACHSEN-ANHALT, which provides regional programming for Saxony-Anhalt. MDR's radio tour is for everyone who wants to find out more about their favourite radio station or host, but will also provide our students with insights into the industry. 14:45 – 16:00 Walk as a group to Halle's main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and enjoy free time to explore the shops, etc. there; return journey to Magdeburg at 16:13 Approx. 17:30 Arrive back in Magdeburg The cost per participant is 17 euros and does not include any refreshments.
