Marist College Enews

Important dates Dear Marist Family,

Thursday 8 August I have no hands but yours Moderation Day Year 4-12, Pupil Free Day I was uncomfortable when I first heard presidential candidate Year 12 AST Trial Donald Trump promise he would always ‘put America first’ and Junior School – Parent Session on Phonics, ‘make America great again’ during his successful campaign. It 5.00pm struck me as a fairly selfish outlook to always put yourself and your nation first regardless of the needs of others. It raises deep Friday 9 August questions of what we prioritise as a nation, a school, a family, and O’Donoghue House Day as an individual. Such a message seems to lack a commitment in 5T Class Assembly, 2.15pm, Junior School Hall showing a concern for those most in need and lacking a generosity Bookings close for Marist Mothers’ and of spirit. Grandmothers’ Afternoon Tea Monday 12 August - We are in the formation business at this College, and in particular, we are in the formation of Friday 16 August the heart. We want our boys to have a gentle heart, a forgiving heart and a heart that acts with Book Week justice. The underlying intent is to raise awareness of justice issues within the context of our commitment to a faith that does justice. Our commitment to the formation of young men is to Monday 12 August create opportunities to form social conscience and social awareness. We want our boys to be Year 7 Retreat Day (first group), able to ask questions about the world around them and perhaps dream about making the world Junior School - Author Visit, Trent ‘Maxi’ Maxwell a better place through the skills and experiences they gain here at the College. Whether it be in College Walkathon - second pledge check the humanities or the sciences or RE or in any other area of the curriculum, there should be some awareness of issues connected with the environment, poverty, human rights, life issues, and Tuesday 13 August reconciliation. Year 7 Retreat Day (second group), Merici College Junior School - Book Week Celebration, ‘Reading Values of equity, tolerance and understanding have a call on the conscience of all members of the is my Secret Power’ school community. The values connected with justice can also apply to life within the school. How Wednesday 14 August well do we treat each other? How do we handle difference and diversity in our classmates? How Year 9 Integration Day do we respect women? Do we act justly?

Year 11 and 12 Study Day Last week we held our Service Day. It was an opportunity for Thursday 15 August students in Years 6-12 to ‘sign up’ and participate in nearly Assumption Mass, 8.45am, Senior Hall 70 different, age appropriate service activities offered at the College. It is no surprise that the vast majority of graduating Friday 16 August students each year achieve at least a 100 hours of service Conway House Day during their final years at the College. Some of these service Lavalla House Day experiences involve raising money and coaching teams, Marist Mothers’ and Grandmothers’ Afternoon Tea, however, the vast majority seeks to provide students with direct 2.00pm - 4.00pm, Junior School Hall. Please contact with parts of society where there is a great need. Such note: change in venue. experiences invite the boys to put themselves in the shoes of Junior School - Governor General’s Science others - those in need, those who are discriminated against, Challenge Day those who are different, and those who broaden our perspective on our world. In many ways, ignorance is the enemy of justice Wednesday 21 August and that real empathy with people is the key to making the world South Weston Primary Athletics a better place. This, in a sense, is what Jesus taught that we Thursday 22 August are all brothers and sisters, that we are neighbours and that we College Walkathon must work for the common good of all people. Click here to view some of the service activities on offer at the College. Friday 23 August 5M Class Assembly, 2.15pm, Junior School Hall There is an old story of a statue of Jesus found in World War I France in the ruins of a shelled Monday 26 August Church. The statue’s arms had been blown off and some passing trooper had slung a sign in ASC English around the neck. It read, ‘I have no hands but yours.’ So simple a statement, but such a deep theology. No hands but yours is a far cry from ‘putting yourself or your country first.’

May St Marcellin continue to watch over our boys and their families.

Yours sincerely

SERVICE DAY – LIVING OUR LIVES WITH LOVE Service Day 2019 has come to a close but service is just beginning at our College. Thanks to Caritas Australia for their Justice workshop and all of the many exhibitors who made our Service Expo so varied and interesting. Well done to the Year 12 Captains who led the terrific fundraising activities for Australian Marist Solidarity.

TACKLING YOUTH HOMELESSNESS FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION MASS AND TALK Members and friends of the Canberra Marist Association recently cast the spotlight on Youth Homelessness in our community. There was a wonderful blend of social, spiritual and service as we were challenged by the statistics and uplifted by the stories of hope shared by Therese Canty from St Vincent de Paul Society. Therese addressed the group about the growing number of young people who are forced to leave home and spend their lives precariously couch surfing or living on the street. She explained that charities face growing complications in finding emergency accommodation for vulnerable people, particularly for teenagers.

We were very grateful for the many people who provided freshly cooked meals, and also for Therese who generously shared her time and enthusiasm for making a real difference in the lives of young people in Canberra. Working together, we were able to package over 70 meals for the Community Meals freezer which support the parishes of Mary Help of Christians, Pearce and St Thomas the Apostle, Kambah. A number of people have expressed a desire to take part in this type of activity in the future. The Canberra Marist Association will endeavour to provide an opportunity to contribute to the Community Meals freezer at least once a semester. Staff and students are also planning to participate in a Vinnies Sleep Out later this year to raise money and awareness of this important issue in the Canberra community.
