The Explorers Education Programme team provides engaging activities, resources and support for teachers, children and the education network, delivering ocean literacy to primary schools. We aim to inspire children and educators to learn about our marine and maritime identity and heritage, as well as making informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources. We communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way, increasing the awareness and understanding of our marine biodiversity, the environment, as well as the opportunities and social benefits of our ocean wealth. To help inspire children learning about the ocean, we have developed a series of teaching materials and resources about Squid! Sociopathetic Abscess Or Yawning Chasm? the Absent Postcolonial Transition In
Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. Key Words Doctor Who, cosmopolitanism, colonialism, postcolonialism, race, teleology, science fiction This is the submitted version of a paper that has been published with minor changes in The Journal of Commonwealth Literature, 45(2): 207-225. 1 1. Deep Ocean Habitats Things change the deeper you go in the ocean: light disappears, temperatures grow increasingly colder, and pressure gets much higher. The amount of oxygen in the water sunlight zone decreases with depth but then gets higher again at the bottom! Because these changes twilight zone affect the types of organisms that can survive there, the ocean is divided into five layers by depth called life zones. Only the sunlight zone receives enough sunlight for algae to convert light into energy midnight zone (photosynthesis). Because almost all food webs start with plants or algae, this is the zone where the most animals live. The twilight zone still gets some sunlight, but not enough for photosynthesis. The animals that live here either travel to the sunlight zone to feed or depend on food falling from above. There is no light in the midnight zone. Most abyssal zone of the animals that live here produce their own light through bioluminescence. The abyssal zone is pitch black, almost freezing cold, and has little oxygen and incredibly high pressure, yet animals still live here. In the deep trenches is the hadal zone. It is like the abyssal zone, except with even more hadal zone immense -

Vigilantes, Incorporated: an Ideological Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster
VIGILANTES, INCORPORATED: AN IDEOLOGICAL ECONOMY OF THE SUPERHERO BLOCKBUSTER BY EZRA CLAVERIE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English with a minor in Cinema Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor José B. Capino, Chair Associate Professor Jim Hansen Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky Associate Professor Robert A. Rushing Professor Frank Grady,Department of English, University of Missouri, Saint Louis ii ABSTRACT Since 2000, the comic-book superhero blockbuster has become Hollywood’s most salient genre. “Heroes, Incorporated: A Political Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster” examines these seemingly reactionary fantasies of American power, analyzing their role in transmedia storytelling for a conglomerated and world-spanning entertainment industry. This dissertation argues that for all their apparent investment in the status quo and the hegemony of white men, superhero blockbusters actually reveal the disruptive and inhuman logic of capital, which drives both technological and cultural change. Although focused on the superhero film from 2000 to 2015, this project also considers the print and electronic media across which conglomerates extend their franchises. It thereby contributes to the materialist study of popular culture and transmedia adaptation, showing how 21st century Hollywood adapts old media for new platforms, technologies, and audiences. The first chapter traces the ideology of these films to their commercial roots, arguing that screen superheroes function as allegories of intellectual property. The hero’s “brand” identity signifies stability, even as the character’s corporate owners continually revise him (rarely her). -
