Colder weather returns again tomorrow, but we know the car show season is really only weeks away. Several members of the Facebook page "Edsel Restoration and Preservation Group" have mentioned an online source for Edsel parts, and many other cars as well. It's called the "Rock Auto Parts Catalog," (rockauto.com) and has apparently been a good source of mechanical parts according to those who have used it. I stumbled across one of my favorite commercials on YouTube a few weeks ago. It's a Midas muffler commercial featuring a guy driving a white and black 59 Ranger 4-door hardtop with a bad muffler. He stops at one gas station after another, and nobody wants to try putting a muffler on that Edsel! One of the gas station attendants utters my favorite line: "I have something I might be able to put in sideways." The Edsel owner glares at him, and drives away in disgust. I wonder whatever happened to that Edsel. A scene from the Midas commercial Drive your Edsel proudly! George From the President’s Desk! Volume XLVII, Issue 2 Page 3 Members’ Edsels Delwyn Watt of Sedona, Arizona is the proud owner of the 1959 Edsel Ranger 2-door sedan pictured below. He purchased the car in Tucson in 1984 and joined the EOC around that time. Delwyn states that the car was originally from Kentucky. It had very little rust at the time of the purchase, and what little it did have, was repaired. It is a 6-cylinder with a standard shift, and except for the colors, it is very much like the first Edsel purchased by Edsel Henry Ford, founder of the EOC. This car served Delwyn as his daily driver for 28 years. For his Edsel to be able to adapt to the Arizona climate, Delwyn found it necessary to do a number of upgrades and modifications, including the addition of an air condi- tioner with a large cooling fan and a radiator overflow bottle. The generator was replaced with an alternator to handle the load from the air conditioning. This resulted the need for a larger battery, and the battery tray and hold- down had to be changed as well. Delwyn added that he still needs to get a shroud for the fan as the heat is a problem in Arizona. All the windows have received a dark tinting treatment to block out as much sunlight as possible. This Edsel was also fitted with 15-inch wheels to improve economy. The original wheel covers would not fit on 15 inch wheels, and were replaced with Buick wheel covers. A modern radio has taken the place of the original 8- tube radio along with retractable antennas on the rear deck. A few of safety items added included a third brake light in front of the rear window, a loud tri tone horn from a Cadillac, and a unique fog light arrangement. Delwyn pointed that his Edsel was originally black and that it has been re-painted 10 times. The current color is a two-tone light grey. He says, you simply cannot have a black car in Arizona. The Edsel was retired from daily transportation a couple of years ago and is now driven once a month. Now this doesn't mean that each line used "all" the colors offered. There were colors seen on Ford, Edsel, Mercury, T-bird, Comet and Lincoln, some used only on Ford and Edsel, some only on Edsel and Mercury and some only on T-bird and Lincoln. Here is a basic listing of Edsel colors and their Ford and/or Mercury counterparts. It is interesting to note that for 1960 Ford Motor Company coordinated all their passenger car colors across all lines. While each line had two or three exclusive colors, generally the same paint color was used across all lines, a practice that started with FoMoCo of Canada's way of applying paint.
