Missouri Valley Special Collections Coca-Cola Building 2104 Grand Avenue completed 1915 by Ann McFerrin Most people in the Kansas City area know the tall and distinctive landmark building at 21st and Grand as the Western Auto Building. Earlier Kansas City residents knew it under two other names: the Candler Building, and its original moniker, the Coca-Cola Building. By the early twentieth century, the future of Kansas City showed great promise. The population in the 1880s was 60,000; by 1909 it had grown to 248,000. With its central location, the city became a focus for commerce and industry, including livestock and agricultural-related businesses, banking, and the railroad industry, among others. Several national companies placed regional headquarters here, such as Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Company. Finally, there were plans in the works for the building of a new train station near 24th and Main streets. It was this thriving city that attracted Asa G. and Charles H. Candler, president and vice-president respectively of the Coca- Cola Company of Atlanta. Asa Candler commented about their search for a place in the central west of America in which the company could build a new plant and distribution center: We learned that twenty states of the union, embracing more than two million square miles with a population exceeding twenty-five million people, were more advantageously served by Kansas City than by any other city, and that the distributing facilities of Kansas City were superior to any other in this district . We found it to be equally advantageously located for passenger traffic . -

M a n y specialized financial firms have sought to diversify them selves and have begun to offer a wider range of financial products than they had offered previously. For example, S & L s and mutual savings banks n o w offer commercial and consumer credit in addition to their mo r e tra ditional product, h o m e mortgages, and credit unions have begun to offer h o m e mortgages in addition to their traditional product, consumer credit. Commercial banks, which for m a n y years tended to restrict themselves to commercial lending, n o w serve a wide range of commercial, household, and government customers by intermediating across a wide range of financial products. Further, all three of these depository institutions have begun to offer a wider range of deposit instruments, particularly transaction ac counts, that were not offered previously. -

THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE COMMERCIAL NETWORK The tire soon passed from being an industrial product—a mechanical component and automobile part—to an article of consumption comprising another good exhibited in publicity with the aim of attracting customers. With the purchase of a new car that was equipped with new tires, a circuit that fed this specialized industry was initiated. Throughout the life of the vehicle the tires had to be replaced several times due to wear and tear or deterioration, and the car owner had to choose between maintain- ing the original brand provided by the manufacturer or choosing a different one. Given the strong competition, one of the keys for positioning the product was to have ample knowledge of the distinct market demands and to know how to choose the adequate channel of distribution, tire sales and service for each case. 1. A slice of the (tire) pie The production of the tire industry, running in parallel with that of vehicle manufacturers, is aimed at satisfying demand in three main areas: the Original Equipment market (known by the acronym OE), the Replacement or Renewal market (abbreviated here as RE) and the Export market (abbreviated here as EX). OE consists of tires sold directly to car manufacturers so as to equip their vehicles in the assem- bly line. RE are tires sold directly to the consumer to replace the tires that had been fitted to their vehicle in the factory. -
