ABSTRACT This study brings together for the first time four non-canonical memoirs written by women from various backgrounds who emigrated from Germany to the United States in the early post-war years and whose texts were published in English in the United States between 2004 and 2011: Irmgard Powell, Don’t Let Them See You Cry: Overcoming a Nazi Childhood (2008); Irmgard A. Hunt, On Hitler’s Mountain: Overcoming the Legacy of a Nazi Childhood (2005); Maria Ritter, Return to Dresden (2004); Sabina de Werth Neu, A Long Silence: Memories of a German Refugee Child 1941-1958 (2011). The memoirs chosen for this study were written by women who were born in Germany between 1932 and 1941. -

The diary documents seven weeks in Berlin at the end of the Second World War. Since the women were a majority of the population as the German men were captured or killed in a war, they became an easy target for the foreign troops marching through the city. Due to the sensitive topics disclosed in the diary, the author called herself “Anonymous”. The journal was published straight after the war, however, the ones who survived the atrocities of the war did not want to be reminded of the war horrors again. Hence, the diary remained forgotten until 2003 when it was republished to audience acclaim. Despite the public opinion that the author’s identity should remain anonymous, in 2003 the author’s identity was revealed as Marta Hillers. This article depicts three main topics: the author’s self-identity as revealed in her diary, the reflection of the enemy through humour and irony, and the diary as a means of survival. The theoretical part discusses the concepts of life writing and diary. In order to grasp a full understanding of the historical circumstances of the German women life writing, a brief historical background is provided. Ich dagegen frage mich, warum es nahezu fünfzig Jahre lang kein Thema war. Helke Sanders (in Johr/Sanders 2005, 9) Introduction The question posed by Helke Sanders above is a crucial one, indeed. Today an abundance of war memorials, feature films, museums, novels, memorial websites, and even computer games constantly reiterate the heroic sufferings for a collective cause endured by various nations’ soldiers. At the same time, and with the exception of tremendously atrocious “modernist events” (Tozzi 2012, 3) such as the Holocaust or Hiroshima, comparably few monuments remind of the fate and suffering of other, civilian groups affected by warfare. And hardly any take up the issue of rape as a feature of war. The present contribution focuses on one of the latter stories – the diary written by an anonymous German woman who survived the Soviet occupation of Berlin in the spring of 1945. I will direct attention to two German editions of the diary (Anonyma 1959 and 2003) and to the release of a feature film that adapted the written work to screen (Färberböck 2008). Employing the concept of the border as a frame for analysis I will, firstly, conceptualize the historical condition of the Anonyma as a precarious liminal sphere of transition between competing sovereignties that dislodged her political status as citizen and reconstituted her as bare life in the sense of Agamben (1998). In the case of rape this new status decisively hampered individual women’s ability to maintain their corporeal integrity – to control the borders of their own bodies. -

From Victims to Actors: Women’s Struggle for Agency in Defeated Germany, 1945 Kelsey Fritz History 408: Senior Honors Thesis April 26, 2016 2 Introduction On May 2, 1945, Ruth Andreas-Friedrich, a journalist and member of an anti-Nazi resistance group, finally recorded in her diary the news that she and her comrades had been waiting years for: “Hitler lies dead in the chancellery.” However, rather than the elation that she expected to experience upon hearing such news, Andreas-Friedrich felt only the “absurdity of this moment,” realizing that Hitler had ceased to be important in the midst of her struggle for food and survival during the Battle of Berlin. -

Tiemann Senior Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for Honors In the Department of History Department of History Union College March, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis examines why mass wartime rape occurred during World War II, as well as examining the reasons for the denial or elimination of rape from public memory. For purposes of analysis, the thesis has been broken down into four cases: rape by Japanese soldiers ⎯ the “comfort women,” rape by German soldiers, rape by the Russian Red Army, and rape by American soldiers in France. The study looks at different reasons that could help explain why soldiers rape during wartime and what provokes them to rape. Rape was quite prevalent during World War II, yet it is rarely acknowledged in discussion of the atrocities during this war. -

Yet, politically and socially, the years between 1943 and 1947 were a time of dramatic reconfigurations, which proved to be foundational for the making of today’s Europe. Seeking Peace in the Wake of War: Europe, 1943-1947 hones in on the crucial period from the beginning of the end of Nazi rule in Europe to the advent of the Cold War. Through a series of interrelated case studies that span the entire continent, it demonstrates how the everyday experiences of Europeans during these five years shaped the transition of their societies from war to peace.
