Telecontrol with GPRS and HSPA via VPN The mobile data services allow you to transmit data wirelessly and inexpensively between widely distributed infrastructure systems. GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, and is an efficient, full-coverage Internet-based data service within the GSM mobile phone network. Operating costs for data transmission result from the amount of data actually transmitted and are hence predictable. GPRS, UMTS and HSPA are best suited for distributed applications that collect wide-ranging data (fill levels, flow rates, messages, alarms), and transmit it to a PC or supervisory control system. The process also works the other way around, i.e. commands and target values can be sent to the remote stations. VPN (Virtual Private Network) ensures that data will be transmitted securely from the main station to the substation. VPN tunnels are used to enable remote stations located outside the control system's network to access the internal network. The substation (client) thereby establishes a VPN connection to the accustomed VPN gateway of the control system or main station. Using this connection, data can be exchanged as if the device were part of the main station's local network. It is particularly well suited for automating facilities that are spread out geographically yet can be viewed as one local network. Common applications include energy supply, water and sewage engineering, traffic control, mobile data communications, and building facility management. Compact PLCs and standard VPN- GPRS routers are sufficient to solve simple and complex automation tasks on site in an inexpensive way. Besides remote data transmission, the PLC handles all other tasks such as pump control including alternating pumps, level adjustment, data logging and buffering data with a time stamp (up to 2MB data memory), monitoring, issuing alarms, controlling lights, etc. For these tasks, the complete functionality of the PLC is at your disposal, including complex mathematical functions. Readily available user libraries (for controlling pumps, process control, data buffering, data transfer, integration of a real-time clock, astronomical calendar, etc.) support the user and reduce the time and effort needed for programming. Functionality: GPRS/HSPA VPN solutions are protected from attacks from the Internet or mobile network by a tunnel between the main station and substation. Moreover, this tunnel enables complete access to the substations, just as if the device were part of the main station's LAN. For example, the main station can modify the substations' PLC program at any time. A device used in a mobile work station can likewise access the main station via VPN. The system enables bidirectional data transmission between the stations close to real-time.
