30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network. -

Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. As fate would have it, the Phillies ended up winning the game 15-11, prompting Mr. -
Black Girl in Boy Meets World
BLACK GIRL IN BOY MEETS WORLD Trina Colette McGee, formerly known as Trina McGee-Davis, (born September 6, ) is an American actress best known for her portrayal of Angela Moore on the ABC-TV sitcom Boy Meets World. of color blindness for the world. In she reprised the role in one episode for the sequel series, Girl Meets World. I'm not painting a painful past of enslavement just to be a pest. Feeny 's class, but there are no interaction between the two seen on screen. This societal attitude isn't inadvertent. I guess I shouldn't take it personal. Enslaved women who were darker most likely worked in the fields, away from the home. I remember falling in love with Shawn, Cory, Eric, Topanga, and Angela over and over again as I watched reruns, and even a few years ago when I rewatched the show, I found myself impressed by it. Later on, Shawn falls in love with the girl who owns a purse, where he discovers by the contents of the purse that they have a lot in common. During her goodbyes to Topanga, Cory, Jack , Eric and Rachel , Angela and Shawn hug each other before she goes; though insisting that they should never say goodbye, Girl Meets World Angela appeared as a guest star in the Girl Meets World Season 2 episode, Girl Meets Hurricane , during which she reveals that her father has died, and she has been married for four years and is contemplating having children. Moore helps her realize that she won't because she is in love, therefore giving her the will to finally say 'I Love You' to Shawn. -
Meta-Television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Introduction the Last Decade Has Seen a Number Of
PREVIOUSLY ON “Cut the Shitcom”: Meta-television in Entourage, Extras and 30 Rock Toni Pape Introduction The last decade has seen a number of fictional TV series about television and film production. These television shows – including the ones to be analysed here: Entourage, Extras, and 30 Rock – relocate the process of creative revitalization in front of the camera. Meta-television, as I understand it here, then is television about the media industry and, more particularly, about the production and quality of film and television itself.1 The three above-mentioned television programs present contemporary writers, actors, directors, etc. working on movies and television shows. Especially Extras and 30 Rock offer a critical overview of how television formats are produced, and they significantly do so in a period of time during which the working conditions for television-makers have fundamentally changed. In a most general sense, the criticism that these shows purport works on two levels. First, as we will see further on, there is an explicit criticism implied in the way the TV shows at hand present the making of a TV show. Thus, there is for instance Andy Millman, the protagonist of Extras about whom I will have more to say later on, who clearly states his dissatisfaction as a disillusioned actor/writer: ANDY: I wanna do something that I’m proud of. And I won’t be proud of shouting out catch phrases in a stupid wig and funny glasses. […] So basically, I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, ok? (Extras “Orlando Bloom”, 21’30”) In a very outspoken way, the programs in question take stock of television’s outworn creative standards and its resulting mediocrity. -
Chinook Winds Heat up the Williams!
(BPI-Van Schaick Island, New York) Biff Barnes Jr. TML Highlight Reel – September 2016 =================================================== Chinook Winds Heat Up The Williams! The Rocky Mountain Chinooks went 11-2 on the road and put up a TML-tying best 19-7 September! This was more than good enough for the Chinooks to open up a virtual clinching 16-game lead over the rest of the Williams Division . Starting pitchers C.C. Sabathia (5-0), Lance McCullers (3-0), Jaime Garcia (3-0) and Tim Lincecum (2-0) were undefeated in their 13 GS! Leading the Chinook offense were Kole Calhoun (.348, 18 RBI), C.J. Cron (.346, 20 RBI) and Nolan Arenado (.333, 20 RBI). Elsewhere in the Oceanic Conference , it was “business as usual” as Arkansas (16-10 for the month) has a near clinching 14-game lead over Perth (16-10) in the Ruth Division , and Albany (17-9) easily clinched the Steinmetz Division Crown . Perth leads ‘Skayuna for the Wild Card by 7 games. Over in the Atmospheric Conference , Toxic Waste (18-8) clinched the Gehrig Division Crown , while Gatto Division leader Beverly (19-7) has a near clinching 14-game lead over Valparaiso (14-12). Duluth (15-11) put together another winning period and now leads the Robinson Division by 6 games over Vanderlyle . Valpo now leads Burleigh by 9 games for the Wild Card . --------------------------------------------------- Perth’s Eric Hosmer has taken over the batting lead from Marco Island’s Bryce Harper , .333 to .329. Chesapeak’s Adam Eaton is right behind at .324. Harper still leads the TML in OBP (.474), SLG (.669), walks (128) and RC (153). -
