A Letter from the Founder

elcome home. I am sure I need not tell you how unspeakably thrilled I am that after EIGHT WMONTHS of darkness we are able to safely gather and present you with a season filled with a variety of unique opportunities created expressly with the safety of our actors, staff, and of course YOU in mind.

I don’t know about you, but I am ready to meet with friends (safely, at a distance, with an elbow tap instead of a hug) and enjoy live theatrical offerings once again. I remain committed to the fact that the live experience is unparalleled (live performance and Zoom are just not great partners), and, to that end, we have done everything possible to ensure that you could once again experience the magic of live theatre, while remaining safe.

Thank you. Thank you for your support during this most challenging time for arts organizations across the country. Thank you for “going with the flow” throughout our cancelations and for giving us the space to create new opportunities. Thank you for wearing masks and remaining physically distant from your fellow audience members. The world has changed dramatically in the last eight months, and it is impossible to predict when we will get back to something that feels like normal...or at the very least when we can interact unmasked. For now, let us enjoy this bit of solace, the kind that only live theatre can provide.

Above all else, we remain steadfast in our belief that theatre stirs the soul, provokes discussion, and invites us to pause and reflect in a way no other artform can. We’ve worked long and hard to get to this moment. I may have taken the blessing of enjoying a piece of live theatre amongst an audience for granted before, but one thing I know is that I never will again. This presentation today, and your presence, is something for which I will be forever grateful.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show.

CREATE • ENGAGE • INSPIRE A Letter from the Chairman

Dear Gulfshore Playhouse Community,

It is with excitement and confidence that we proceed with our fifteenth season. As the world, our nation, and Southwest Florida continue to navigate very serious circumstances and challenges, the management team, staff, and Board have been working hard to understand the ever changing issues and plan for the season, and the future, in a responsible, successful manner.

Our entire community has responded in a magnificent way. Our patrons, donors, and ticket holders have, through their thoughtful generosity, ensured we have the support to move forward. Our Board of Directors has set the standard in insightful guidance combined with their generosity supporting the annual budget and the Capital Campaign. Our business leaders, generous residents, and government officials have been very helpful in securing our future for the benefit of the entire community.

The staff has worked very long, effective hours collaboratively to continually anticipate problems and develop contingencies for the safety and comfort of our audiences, our actors, and our students. They have inspired all of us. They have done so guided by the core values of the organization and are taking the steps now to progress the long term strategic plan.

I am delighted that this culminates in a wonderful, safe season during which we continue to produce high-quality professional theatre and student engagement opportunities for our region. Another major jewel is growing in the cultural fabric of our community. Our new Gulfshore Playhouse Cultural Campus featuring the Baker Theatre and Education Center will be an iconic cultural center and artistic home for all of us. We all thank you for your support and patronage.

Enjoy the performance,

he magic of theatre is alive with Gulfshore Playhouse TEducation’s STAR Academy. Thanks to the generosity and commitment by our patrons and community, I am truly honored and beyond excited to present to you Little Women the Musical and Ebenezer Jr., based off of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Though different in nature, these two literary masterpieces share powerful themes that resonate through generations. One major theme that echoes throughout each story is the importance of being genuine. In Little Women, the importance of paying more attention to the inner spiritual self than to temporary, earthly conditions like wealth and impressive appearances is often emphasized. The March family wants only what they deserve and believe that what they deserve depends on how hard they work. The same can be said in Ebenezer Jr. through the relationship between Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchit. Scrooge, a wealthy miser, has more money than he could spend in a lifetime, yet he is greedy and stingy. Bob Cratchit, on the other hand, symbolizes the sympathetic poor: hard-working, honest, underserved, and unable to get ahead. There is an unfortunate gap between rich and poor, consequently the wealthy are encouraged to give generously because generous giving creates nurturing relationships, changes the lives of the poor, and makes life more meaningful.

The theme of genuineness resounds in all of us. To be sincere, to be authentic, to offer unadulterated integrity when we as human beings differ in our livelihoods should be an ideal we uphold not just during the holiday season, but rather all year long. Both Little Women and Ebenezer Jr. reflect these ideals and truly paint a picture of the opportunities and obstacles we face as a society. My hope is that you acknowledge and understand them through the art we present to you on stage.

Thank you for your support of Gulfshore Playhouse Education and the power of community. We are very grateful you are here and hope you enjoy our retelling of these timeless tales.

Thanks to the generous vanguard support of local philanthropists, we continue to make great strides toward the creation of the Gulfshore Playhouse Cultural Campus, which will feature the Baker Theatre and Education Center, on the corner of 1st Avenue S and Goodlette-Frank Road. As we move toward groundbreaking, construction, and grand opening, we hope you will join us in this exciting venture. This project is a testament to our community’s generosity, passion, and belief that live professional theatre can change the world.

We are all connected by our love of theatre and our belief in its transformative power. The new Gulfshore Playhouse will be a home for theatre of the highest quality, as well as a confluence of patrons, students, and artists who will surely leave more educated, enriched, and enlivened than when they arrived.

Working together, we can transform our region by ushering Southwest Florida onto a new stage of cultural excellence. In our new building, the caliber of our programming will continue to thrive, we will have the privilege of impacting the lives of more people than ever before, and we will affirm our place on the national stage by contributing vibrantly to the expansion of theatre in our nation.

We invite you to join with fellow visionaries deeply committed to world-class theatre and unique educational opportunities in creating something special for yourself, for Naples, and for generations to come.
