Yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea sulphurea) is a sub-species of Cacatua sulphurea which is spread in Sulawesi and several surrounding islands, including on Pasoso Island. This cockatoo population is under tremendous pressure until categorized as critical. So far, there is no comprehensive information about population status and sustainable population size. The objective of this research area was to assess the current status or size of the population, study the size of the sustainable population and study the determinants factor of the Yellow- crested cockatoo population sustainability on Pasoso Island. -

Acknowledgements 1. Summary Laojunshan Nature Reserve is located at Yibin city, Sichuan province, south China. It belongs to eastern part of Liangshan mountains and is among the twenty-five hotspots of global biodiversity conservation. The local virgin alpine subtropical deciduous forests are abundant, which are actually rare at the same latitudes and harbor a tremendous diversity of plant and animal species. It is listed as a Global 200 ecoregion (WWF), an Important Bird Area (No. CN205), and an Endemic Bird Area (No. D14) (Stattersfield, et al . 1998). However, as a nature reserve newly built in 1999, it is only county-level and has no financial support from the central government. Especially, it is quite lack of scientific research, for example, the avifauna still remains unexplored except for some observations from bird watchers. Furthermore, the local community is extremely poor and facing modern development pressures, unmanaged human activities might seriously disturb the local ecosystem. We conducted our project from April to June 2007, funded by Conservation Leadership Programme. Two fieldwork strategies were used: “En bloc-Assessment” to produce an avifauna census and ecological assessments; "Special Survey" to assess the conservation status of some threatened endemic bird species. -
Turdoides Affinis Mitogenome Reveals the Translational Efficiency And

We have taken the advantage of high throughput next‑generation sequencing technique to sequence the complete mitogenome of Yellow‑billed babbler (Turdoides afnis), a species endemic to Peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Both, reference‑based and de‑novo assemblies of mitogenome were performed and observed that de‑novo assembled mitogenome was most appropriate. The complete mitogenome of yellow‑billed babbler (assembled de‑novo) was 17,672 bp in length with 53.2% AT composition. Thirteen protein‑coding genes along with two rRNAs and 22 tRNAs were detected. The arrangement pattern of these genes was found conserved among Leiothrichidae family mitogenomes. Duplicated control regions were found in the newly sequenced mitogenome. Downstream bioinformatics analysis revealed the efect of translational efciency and purifying selection pressure over thirteen protein‑coding genes in yellow‑billed babbler mitogenome. Ka/Ks analysis indicated the highest synonymous substitution rate in the nad6 gene. Evolutionary analysis revealed the conserved nature of all the protein‑coding genes across Leiothrichidae family mitogenomes. Our limited phylogeny results placed T. afnis in a separate group, a sister group of Garrulax. Overall, our results provide a useful information for future studies on the evolutionary and adaptive mechanisms of birds belong to the Leiothrichidae family. -

Dowell3 and Zhengwang Zhang4* Abstract Background: The Emei Shan Liocichla (Liocichla omeiensis) is a globally vulnerable babbler, endemic to southwest- ern China. We investigated its nest predators, nest-site selection and nest success at the Laojunshan National Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China in order to identify the precise nesting-habitat requirements of the species, and to test whether the nest-site-selection cues, preferred by the Emei Shan Liocichla, are positively associated with nest success. Methods: We used infrared cameras to determine nest predators. We compared the microhabitat attributes between nest and random sites, as well as successful and failed nests. We used Binary Logistic Regression to determine the most important variables affecting nest-site selection of the Emei Shan Liocichla. We used the nest survival analysis in Program MARK to estimate daily nest survival rates (DSR). Nest success was calculated using the Mayfield method. Results: In total 56 nests were found. The DSR for all nests that contained at least one egg was 0.9564 0.0091 (95 % CI 0.9346–0.9711) (n 40), while the total nest success was 27.5 %. We identified four categories of predators± in 10 nest predation events,= i.e. squirrels (n 5), snakes (n 3), raptors (n 1) and wasps (n 1). We found that: (1) nest predation was the primary reason for =nest failure of the= Emei Shan Liocichla,= (2) tree cover,= bamboo cover, liana abun- dance and distance to forest edge or gap were the most important variables affecting nest-site selection of this spe- cies, and (3) the nest-site-selection variables we measured appeared not to be positively associated with nest success. -

Email: [email protected] This paper describes a new bird species of the genus Liocichla discovered near Eaglenest Wildlife Sanc- tuary in western Arunachal Pradesh, India. While the taxon most closely resembles L. omeiensis, an endemic of China, the many points of difference in plumage, size and vocalisations indicate a new species. The known population is very small and only three (breeding?) pairs responded to song play- back in May 2006. The plumage and the vocalisations are distinctive and therefore the paucity of records suggests a small and highly localized population. 1. Characterization of Novel Microsatellite Markers of the Emei Shan Liocichla Using Restriction Site-Associated DNA Sequencing

However, little was known about the genetic status of this threatened species. Methods: We applied restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-Seq) for rapid mass identification of micros- atellite markers of the Emei Shan Liocichla. Results: A total of 11,564 microsatellite sequences were obtained, 600 random loci were designed for screening and 24 polymorphic microsatellite loci were selected for further validation. The average allele number, average observed heterozygosity and average expected heterozygosity were relatively low in our samples, which were 6.08, 0.6618 and 0.7048, respectively, indicating that the Emei Shan Liocichla might have lost some genetic diversity. Further analyses suggested that the populations distributed on two mountains (Daxiangling and Xiaoliangshan) showed a modest degree of genetic differentiation. Conclusions: These novel microsatellite markers provided valuable preliminary knowledge regarding the genetic status of the Emei Shan Liocichla and can be useful in further studies, as well as in the management and conservation of this species. In all we recorded 287 species including many endemics and specialities. We began in Chengdu before heading down to Emei Shan and the new hot-spot of Longcanggou which provided us with such delights as Temminck’s Tragopan, lots of phylloscopus and seicercus warblers, numerous bush-warblers, Emei Shan Liocichla and Great and Grey-hooded Parrotbills. We can be a little flexible on this tour as there are just so many great birds to find and every mountain seems to have different possibilities, so with that in mind we visited Erlang Shan and saw Lady Amherst Pheasant, Firethroat, Black-streaked Scimitar-babbler and Barred Laughingthrush. The next site was the fabulous Balang Shan where Chinese Monal, Snow Partridge, Grandala and other high altitude birds were seen. -
