After a morning tea break, we continue north through the towns of Lochiel, Red Hill and Port Germein, to Port Augusta, at the head of Spencer Gulf and in close proximity to The Flinders Ranges. Travelling down the western side of the Gulf, we pass through Whyalla, one of the largest regional centres in South Australia, and on to the small harbour side township of Cowell, which is recognised as having the oldest and one of the largest jade deposits in the world, with a variety of colours and patterns not found elsewhere. Oyster farming is a relatively new but thriving industry in this community and a large percentage of South Australia's oyster supply came from Cowell last year. We call in to the delightful coastal towns of Arno Bay and Port Neill before arriving in Tumby Bay. Here there is an abundant and diverse range of bird life. Taking the White River Road with the rolling Koppio Hills in the distance brings us to the Lincoln Highway.

The taxonomy and traits of many species can remain a mystery. This image was sent to the Melbourne Museum where the species was identified - a rare image collected locally. Back cover image: Crop surrounding a pocket of native vegetation (2009). Much land has been cleared for farming in the Chain of Bays. Small tracts of native vegetation represent opportunities for seed collection and habitat preservation. Connecting these micro habitats is the real challenge. Inside cover: Cliff top vegetation Tyringa (2009). In the Chain of Bays sensitive vegetation clings to the calciferous limestone cliffs. Off road vehicles and quad bikes pose an increasing threat in the Chain of Bays. Right image: Death Adder Sceale Bay (2010). These beautiful and highly venomous reptiles are very rarely seen by local people suggesting their numbers may be low in the area.
