To take his spot on the roster, the A’s have recalled catcher Landon Powell from Triple-A Sacramento. Ellis was batting .323 with three RBI in eight games with Oakland. He started each of the A’s first seven games before missing seven games with the hamstring injury. Ellis returned to the starting lineup last night against New York and went 0 for 2 before leaving the game in the sixth inning. This is his fifth career stint on the DL. Powell hit .162 in 20 games with Oakland this spring and was one of the A’s final cuts on April 3. He is batting .217 with a home run and two RBI in six games with Sacramento, appearing in three games at catcher, two at designated hitter and one at first base. The 28-year old switch-hitter spent the entire 2009 season on the A’s roster but appeared in just 46 games as the back-up to Kurt Suzuki. Powell hit .229 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in his Major League debut. A’s News Clips, Thursday, November 4, 2010 Oakland A's buy out contract of Eric Chavez, pick up options of Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune, 11/4/2010 The A's cut ties with third baseman Eric Chavez on Wednesday, declining his $12.5 million option for 2011 and paying him a $3 million buyout. Although most saw the move coming, it provides a historic conclusion to the six-time Gold Glover's career in an Oakland uniform. The A's also announced that they exercised their $6 million option on second baseman Mark Ellis and $5.75 million option on center fielder Coco Crisp, ensuring both will return next season. Chavez -- whose six-year, $66 million contract expired at season's end -- now becomes a free agent. And though he's not sure what interest he'll generate, he said he's not ready to retire despite multiple injuries that have ravaged his career since 2006. One possible scenario was for the A's to extend Chavez, 32, a non-roster invitation to spring training if he appeared healthy. But Chavez said he needs a fresh start and believes the A's are ready to move on as well. "I'm going to see what's out there," Chavez said from his home in Arizona. "I've done everything, seen every doctor. The only thing I haven't done is change the scenery. And I don't even know what that (entails). But I'm going to hang my hat on that and see if that makes any difference." A first-round pick in 1996, Chavez became a cornerstone as the A's made five postseason appearances over a seven-year span beginning in 2000.

A’s News Clips, Sunday, October 3, 2010 Oakland A's see bigger things for shorstop Cliff Pennington By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune People throughout the A's organization speak highly of shortstop Cliff Pennington's play this season. Pennington is a bit more critical. "I've definitely got some things I need to work on," he said before Saturday's 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners. "I can improve my consistency at the plate and obviously work on cutting down those errors on defense." So as the curtain draws on his first full big league season, Pennington has room for improvement. But with the A's facing decisions all over the diamond this offseason, they don't appear concerned with their shortstop. Pennington has started 146 of Oakland's 161 games, no small feat on a team that lost player after player to injury. He also has established himself as a rapidly improving defense player who has displayed excellent range while justifying the A's decision to install him as the starter after only 96 games of major league experience. "I think he's made a lot of strides both offensively and defensively," A's general manager Billy Beane said. "Last year he kind of ran out of gas. But I think he's improved a significant deal and has everything to be one of the best defenders at his position in the league." To be mentioned among the game's best shortstops, however, Pennington will have to reduce the errors. Only Miguel Tejada's 26 errors in 1998 were more by an A's shortstop over the past 23 years than Pennington's 25.
