The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -

256 SOME PHRYGIAN MONUMENTS. SOME PHRYGIAN MONUMENTS. [PL. XXVI.—XXIX.] OF the five Phrygian monuments now published from the drawings of Mr. A. C. Blunt, No. 4 on PL XXVIII. may be assigned to an early period of Phrygian history. It has been already pub- lished by Steuart, Anc. Monum.; but like all his drawings, this is very incorrect and gives an inaccurate idea of the original.1 The monument is at Yapuldak (see the map in last number of this Journal). There was at this place a town or fortification of some kind on the top of a hill, which rises about 200 feet above the plain. The western side of the hill is a precipice of rock, and on all other sides it is very steep. On the western side an underground staircase cut in the rock leads down to the plain: a similar one at Pishmish Kalessi has already been men- tioned above, p. 6. Near this staircase there is a doorway leading into a small rock-chamber, from which another door in the opposite wall leads into a second chamber, larger than the first. At the back of the second chamber a door admits into a third chamber, and in the back of this third chamber there is a door or window which looks out over the precipice to the west. One can step out through this window and stand on a ledge about eighteen inches wide; and this is the only way to get a near view of the carved front which is now given according to Mr. -
The Idea of 'Celtic Justice' in the Greco-Roman Lighter Literature
Cruel and Unusual? The Idea of ‘Celtic justice’ in the Greco-Roman Lighter Literature Antti Lampinen Abstract This article seeks to demonstrate that dramatically illustrated examples of the Celts’ sense of justice emerge as a minor trope in Greek and Roman ‘lighter literature’. In sources ranging from the Hellenistic to the Imperial era, novelistic narratives taking their cue from the register of lighter literature—with its emphasis on pathos, cultural difference, and romantic themes—feature several barbarian characters, characterised as ‘Celts’ or ‘Galatae’, who act according to a code of conduct that was constructed purposefully as barbarian, archaic, and alien. This set of motifs I venture to call the trope of ‘Celtic justice’. While almost certainly devoid of historical source value to actual judicial cultures of Iron Age Europeans, neither are these references mere alterité. Instead, their relationship with other literary registers demonstrate the literariness of certain modes of thought that came to inform the enquiry of Greek and Roman observers into the Celtic northerners. Their ostensibly ethnographical contents emerge as markers of complex textual strategies and vibrant reception of literary motifs. While lacking ‘anthropological’ source value, these texts demonstrate the variety and intensity with which the contacts between Greeks and Celts affected the epistemic regime of the Mediterranean societies.* From the 270s onwards the Hellenistic era witnessed among the Greeks an intense and emotionally charged interest in Celts. -

Traditionally, the employment of Greek soldiers by the Persian Achaemenid Empire and the Kingdom of Egypt during this period has been understood to indicate the military weakness of these polities and the superiority of Greek hoplites over their Near Eastern counterparts. I demonstrate that the purported superiority of Greek heavy infantry has been exaggerated by Greco-Roman authors. Furthermore, close examination of Greek mercenary service reveals that the recruitment of Greek soldiers was not the purpose of Achaemenid foreign policy in Greece and the Aegean, but was instead an indication of the political subordination of prominent Greek citizens and poleis, conducted through the social institution of xenia, to Persian satraps and kings. -

In 408 BC he took power there as a karanos (Old Persian *kārana-, Greek κάρανος), a governor of high rank with extensive military and political competence reporting directly to the Great King. Holding his power in Anatolia, Cyrus had his own court there, in many respects modeled after the Great King’s court. The aim of this article is to show some aspects of functioning and organization of Cyrus the Younger’s court in Anatolia. Keywords: Cyrus the Younger; court; court’s staff and protocol In 4081, Cyrus, commonly known as the Younger (424/423-401), son of the Great King Darius II (424/423-404), was appointed by his father to rule over an important part of the Achaemenid Empire, Anatolia. Cyrus wielded his power there as karanos (Old Persian *kārana-, Greek κάρανος), a high- ranking governor with extensive military and political competence, reporting directly to the Great King (see Podrazik 2018, 69-83; cf. Barkworth 1993, 150-151; Debord 1999, 122-123; Briant 2002, 19, 321, 340, 600, 625-626, 878, 1002; Hyland 2013, 2-5). Cyrus held his own court while in Anatolia. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS CAMBRIDGE NEW YORK PORT CHESTER MELBOURNE SYDNEY 4 THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AT APAMEA The city of Apamea in Phrygia was founded by Antiochus I Soter (280-261 BCE) as part of a scheme to strengthen the Seleucid hold on Asia Minor, to facilitate trade and to protect the highways. It was one of a series of garrison-cities and was built at a point of strategic impor- tance on the Great Southern Highway. Antiochus I Soter founded the city on a plateau on either side of the Marsyas River by moving the inhabitants of nearby Celaenae into his newly created city. Celaenae itself was a large and prosperous city with a long history. Under Persian rule, Celaenae became the principal royal seat in Phrygia and a residence of the satraps. After Alexander conquered the city, it was designated as the Greek Capital of Inner Anatolia.1 At the beginning of the common era, Apamea was the second most important market and distribution centre in Asia Minor owing to its geographical location. The city commanded the cut in the mountain range through which the Southern Highway climbed to the plateau of Central Anatolia, making it the commercial junction through which wealth-laden traffic passed to the East. -

CADWALLADER A NEW INSCRIPTION, A CORRECTION AND A CONFIRMED SIGHTING FROM COLOSSAE aus: Epigraphica Anatolica 40 (2007) 109–118 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn A NEW INSCRIPTION, A CORRECTION AND A CONFIRMED SIGHTING FROM COLOSSAE Not since 1939, when William Calder published his contributions in the sixth volume of Monumenta Asiae Minoris Antiqua, have new inscriptions from Colossae been published.1 A mention of an inscription was made by W. Harold Mare in 1976 but no details were provided. He stated that the stone, having “several lines of inscription” was “found in the fi eld to the south of the acropolis”. Weathering of the stone prevented a photograph of the stone revealing more than “letters here and there” so that “it will take some time before some meaningful translation can be made”.2 The total collection of twenty-fi ve inscriptions has occasionally been revisited, most notably by Louis and Jeanne Robert and H.-G. Pfl aum, and new readings and interpretations of a handful of the known texts have resulted.3 Accordingly, any new inscriptions from Colossae are prized given the penurious store available. In 2005, during two brief familiarisation visits to the site of Colossae, I came across three inscriptions, two in a fragmentary state, one all but complete. Two of the inscriptions were on funerary bomoi found in the necropolis; the third was an honorifi c pedestal found partly embed- ded in mud half-way down the bank of the river that fl ows through the site (the Çürüksu, ancient name Lycus). Bruce In antiquity several rivers in Asia Minor were called the Lycus River.1 The Lycus River pertaining to Colossians watered part of southwestern Phrygia and flowed into the Maeander River. When one speaks of the cities of the Lycus Valley, he usually means the three which are mentioned in the Book of Colossians: Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis (Col. 2:1; 4:13). Of these three, Colossae was by far the oldest; it was a city when Xerxes and his army passed that way in 480 B.C.2 Laodicea was founded by the Seleucid King Antiochus II (261-246 B.C.); Hierapolis received the constitution of a city from Eumenes II, king of Pergamum (197-160 B.C.). The region formed part of the Persian Empire from Cyrus' overthrow of Croesus, king of Lydia, in 546 B.C. to Alexander the Great's conquest of Asia Minor in 334 B.C. For the next century and a half the Lycus Valley was ruled by Alexander and his successors, but by the Peace of Apamea, imposed by the Romans on Antiochus III in 188 B.C., it was taken from the Seleucids and added to the kingdom of Pergamum, which was in alliance with Rome. In 133 B.C. the last king of Pergamum bequeathed his realm to the Romans, who four years later reorganized it as the province of Asia. -

Thrace was Lysimachus* legacy from Alexander's empire; though problems posed by its formidable tribes and limited resources excluded him from the Successors' wars for nearly ten years, its position, linking Europe and Asia, afforded him some influence, Lysimachus failed to conquer "all of Thrace", but his settlements there achieved enough stability to allow him thoughts of rule across the Hellespont, in Asia Minor, More ambitious and less cautious than is often thought, Lysimachus' acquisition of empire in Asia Minor, Macedon and Greece from c.315 BC to 284 BC reflects considerable military and diplomatic skills, deployed primarily when self-interest demanded rather than reflecting obligations as a permanent member of an "anti-Antigonid team". -

Some of his most important letters arose out of problems with churches in Galatia and the city of Colossae. The Apocalypse, the First Epistle of Peter, and the correspondence between Pliny and Trajan reflect the conflict between emperor worship and Christianity in Asia Minor.
