Week 9 Term 4 2020 We learnt the importance of connectedness and the value of education. I am not referring to the connectedness we have through a mobile phone screen and social media but the connectedness we have through interacting face-to face in real Principal's News conversations with each other. When it was announced that students would not attend school for five weeks, initially students cheered; but the novelty soon 2020 Wrap Up wore off. After not too long, students were begging to come Normally at this time I would talk about how wonderful this year back to school. Not only because they missed their friends but was and all of the memorable moments that we had. But, the they also realised just how important a teacher is in developing truth is, 2020 will be remembered for one thing, and that is their knowledge and understanding of the world around us, the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Humanities & Languages - 2020 End of Year Review

Usually this time of year I write about all the wonderful excursions and events that across 45 classes we had participated in. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, this year there are no significant events to write about, yet the Humanities & Mr Callum Troyahn - Teacher Languages department made some exciting progress. • Civics & Citizenship and Economics & Business both introduced as Year 7 to Year 9 subject offerings. Students developed a better understanding of Australia’s legal system and values while the impacts of COVID-19 and personal finance were units studied in ECB. • The first group of Year 12’s to complete the new QCAA syllabus saw GSHS students achieve some outstanding results with Amy Greenwood on 75/75 (Business) and Ebony Greenwood 75/75 (Legal Studies) and 72/75 (Business) leading into their Year 10 & 11 Cairns Wake external exams. Manami Brooke in Year 11 was awarded 3rd place in FNQ for her Legal Studies Park Rewards Trip essay in the prestigious BLA Awards. • Week 9 of Term 4 saw a soft launch of virtual reality. On Friday 27th November, Gordonvale State High School held Students in Year 8 engaged with the Vikings while our annual end of year excursion for Year 10 and Year 11 Year 9 students were thrown into the trenches of students to Cairns Wake Park. 32 brave and mostly amateur World War I. I am also departing Gordonvale SHS after just over 4 years in the role. My young family are I are returning to Brisbane after a decade away. Thank you to all the students, staff and community for your support. In the ever changing 21st century I encourage all students to consider these two quotes: Lyle Fredericksen - Head of Department (Humanities & Michael Jordan: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my Languages) career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Wayne Dyer: “My goal is not to be better than anyone else, but to be better than I used to be.”

Reef Trip Lyle Fredericksen - Head of Department (Humanities & Languages) This term the students in Year 11 Aquatic Practices attended an excursion to the outer Great Barrier Reef. During the day students participated in snorkelling surveys assessing coral health condition as part of the ‘Eye on the Reef’ and ‘Coral Watch’ programs. Data they collected was later uploaded and now contributes to both Australian and global databases that monitor and help protect the reef.

Gordonvale Cricket Team

In the blistering sun on Thursday 26th November the Reece Thomson - Teacher (Science) Gordonvale junior cricket team won the toss and decided to bat first – excellent decision. At 3-8 things didn’t look so excellent and the concern was we would not bat out our 20 overs! Fortunately, Logan played a patient innings and our middle order all fought hard meaning we made 7-62 off our 20 overs. Off the back of their rep cricketers, Bentley Park went past our total but the GSHS team showed immense character to compete until the end and in the final 15 balls of the match, the team took 6 wickets for 9 runs! Mr Jerome who arrived to watch was immensely impressed. Jacob took a classic catch, Liam got a run out and Hayden must have heard the stumps were hungry as he decided to give them some cherries, taking 3 wickets in 4 balls. The team was well captained by Chris as all players got a fair go. Kalan and Amy also showed excellent
