News of the Week

For the first time in deaf golfing history, a deaf golf pro won a professional golf tournament. South Korea's Lee Sung, who is deaf, finished #1 at the Asian Tour's Bangkok Airways Open to win his first tournament. With it came the first place prize money of $47,550. He lost his his card on the Asian Tour in 2005 after playing poorly, but has gotten his card back and is a full time Asian Tour pro.

...

The Regal Entertainment Group chain in the Washington, DC area is experimenting with wireless devices given selected patrons. The patrons, while watching movies, will click on the device to alert management to problems such as bad picture, audience disturbance, lousy sound or piracy (illegal taping of the film via camcorders, etc). The newspaper story which made that announcement said nothing about captions. Would the device have a captions button to alert management to disappearing or malfunctioning captions?

...

Susan Scott-Parker, not deaf, and the CEO of the Employers' Forum in United Kingdom, keynoted a speech at a symposium of the disabled in Australia. Her speech touched on the "blind bus driver syndrome." It means that skeptical employers would challenge the need to hire the disabled, the deaf included by asking:

Can you employ a blind bus driver?"

When it applies to the deaf, such questions would surface, like: could the deaf drive? could the deaf read and write? could the deaf walk across the street?

This thinking may be the reason why many employers do not want to hire the deaf.

...

We, the deaf, wave our hands, instead of clapping when we applaud something. This culture of hand waving has been picked up by some people with the Capistrano Unified school board in California. The recent school board meeting was acrimonious, with opposite sides bickering with each other at the drop of the pin. One trustee stood up and asked all to wave, not applaud; while she was shot down by her opponents, moments later some people in the audience stood up and waved, just like us, the deaf. Who knows? Because of noise pollution, more hearing people will wave, not clap or shout.

ANOTHER DEAF PROSECUTOR Last week's DeafDigest mentioned Leonard Hall as the prosecutor for the city of Olathe in Kansas. DeafDigest did mention that there may be other deaf prosecutors around. There was one - Bobbi Cordano served as the prosecutor for the Minnesota's Office of Attorney General for 10 years before moving on to her position as Assistant Dean of the Humphrey Institute at University of Minnesota. Cordano? Yes, the daughter of the Cordanos, formerly of Delavan, Wisconsin - Waldo and Jean, these Deaf Community icons.

A WEB SITE ON THE DEAF IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION We have a number of physicians, dentists, veterinarians and nurses that are deaf. There is also a web site, which is at: http://www.amphl.org

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEAF FILMMAKERS The way the film distribution system is being set up among all filmmakers, the odds may be stacked against deaf filmmakers. The hearing film festivals offer better opportunities because of distributors that are always on the look for the next exciting, money-making film. There are deaf film festivals but it only helps gain exposure, but not make money, for deaf filmmakers. The Sequin Showcase in Sequin, Texas, pioneered by David Pierce is a better option for deaf filmmakers. All box office profits are shared with the deaf filmmakers. A description of the Sequin Showcase can be found on: http://www.davideo.tv/gpage4.html

A NEW SCAM A new scam surfaced on Friday. DeafDigest editor received email like this:

Employment Offer for the Deaf..Become A Dell Agent And Earn More!!!

It contained a "Dell" email address in United Kingdom. A scam? Very definitely so; do not click on it if you received this email. Just delete.

DEAF BOOKS VICTIM OF BOOK BURNING? A couple of weeks ago, a bookstore in Kansas City, Missouri made front page news by burning the books that they were not able to give away - free. The fire department caught wind of it and put a stop to the book burning. What if there were rare deaf books that were victimized by the burning? It indeed would be a tragedy. DeafDigest editor likes to stop at independent book stores and used books bookstores. And much to his surprise he has located a few "out of print" deaf books! Some of these books sit in DeafDigest editor's private library. So if one says it is impossible to find a deaf book at an independent bookstore, the assumption is wrong.

MAINSTREAMING THE WORD "DEAF" INTO EVERYDAY VOCABULARY We are always seeing the word "deaf" being applied to describe things that are not related to the deaf or of the deaf. An example was seeing this one: my 4-year old son has become "mother-deaf," not wanting to listen to my scolding

NUMBER OF DEAF PEOPLE THAT USE SIGN LANGUAGE A newspaper story was posted on a web site, which said:

Nearly 1.5 million people rely on the use of sign language because they are deaf

Wondering - how do we know that there are 1.5 million deaf people that use sign language? What if the actual figure is 500,000 people or even 3.0 million people. Possibly some numbers pulled out of thin air.

DETERMINING THE PERCENTAGE OF HEARING LOSS When a hearing loss is measured, it is in Decibels. There is no way to determine a hearing loss in percentages. Yet it does not prevent newspaper reporters from describing the hearing loss of deaf individuals being written up. An example was this: he suffers from a 10-to-15-per-cent hearing loss

Let us assume it is possible to describe, in percentages, the person's hearing loss. Then what is the criterion or gauge or whatever that is being used to determine the percentages? Or is it the figment of the deaf person's imagination?

WORLDWIDE ISSUES FACING THE DEAF (new short series)

Last year International Deaf Youth Leadership program took place in Denmark, attracting young deaf leaders from different nations. This group tried to address 6 different issues, each very difficult to provide clear answers. Here it goes:

Issue #7 -

Why are doctors discouraging the use of sign language for deaf children who have cochlear implants except if the child has further disabilities? This question was pointed at the doctors of Denmark?

It is an old story - sign language was discouraged by American doctors for years and years; it simply went underground during these years of suppression.

When the four-time National Deaf Prep Champion Rochester School for the Deaf Wildcats soccer team also earns FRAT Team of the Year honors for two years running-2005 & 2006, it's a good bet that student and alumni athletes' appetite for the sports is a healthy one. Now that passion extends beyond RSD's own interscholastic Wildcats soccer team. RSD student athletes Chad Evringham (2006 FRAT Player of the Year), Cory Behm (2006 FRAT First Team), Matthew Poe, Daniel Baker (2006 FRAT First Team), Steven Alianell, Richard Spiecker (2006 FRAT Second Team), and RSD alumnus Justine DiBiase (2005 National Deaf Player of the Year), are players on a recreational, inter-town "House" soccer team in the Chili Soccer Association, Inc., league. This organization operates under the auspices of the U.S. and New York State Youth Soccer Associations. The soccer players from RSD started playing in the Chili league on May 23rd of this year. Weekly games will continue through early August.

By the way, Chili is a suburb of Rochester, NY, and residents there don't pronounce it like the food, but with long "i"s: like "CHeye-lie."
