Amir Zaki grew up skateboarding, so he has an understanding of these spaces and, as an artist who has spent years photographing the built and natural landscape of California, he has an appreciation of the large concrete structures as both sculptural forms and significant features of the contemporary landscape, belonging to a tradition of public art and Brutalist architecture. Each remarkable photograph in this book is a composite of shots taken with a digital camera mounted on a motorized tripod head; this allows Zaki to photograph areas that would otherwise be impossible to capture. -

New York Stars Stevens and Muriqi to Headline Havoc Boxing on November 20 at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn
NEW YORK STARS STEVENS AND MURIQI TO HEADLINE HAVOC BOXING ON NOVEMBER 20 AT THE AVIATOR SPORTS COMPLEX IN BROOKLYN BROOKLYN, NY (November 10, 2010)—Two of the most recognizable names in the New York boxing scene in recent memory will headline a giant night of world class boxing on Saturday November 20th at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, New York World ranked Super Middleweight Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, and perennial Light Heavyweight contender Elvir Muriqi will headline the show that is promoted by Robert Diaz and Havoc Boxing Promotions. Stevens, of the boxing hotbed of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn is one of the most feared punchers in the Super Middleweight division and has a record of 21-3 with fifteen knockouts. Stevens started out his career as one of the most ballyhooed prospects in boxing as he racked up thirteen straight victories with eleven knockouts. After suffering a controversial stoppage defeat to veteran Marcos Primera, Stevens scored a eight round unanimous decision in the rematch that took place four months later. After winning four consecutive bouts, Stevens dropped a ten round unanimous decision to former U.S. Olympian Andre Dirrell in a bout that was shown on HBO. Stevens went on to win four consecutive bouts which included a three round pounding over then undefeated Piotr Wilczewski (22-0) in front of predominantly Polish crowd in Newark, New Jersey. In Stevens last bout, he came out strong before dropping a twelve round unanimous decision to former member of the Contender Jesse Brinkley (34-5) in an IBF title elimination bout on January 29 in Brinkley’s hometown of Reno, Nevada. -

How the History of Hip Hop Dance Has Led to a Struggle for Integration Into Collegiate Dance Programs
How the History of Hip Hop Dance Has Led to a Struggle for Integration into Collegiate Dance Programs By Alexandra Rosen Center for Dance, Music and Theater Goucher College Baltimore, MD Abstract This essay, How the History of Hip Hop Dance has Led to a Struggle for Integration into Collegiate Dance Programs, was written by Alexandra Rosen. Rosen is a senior (2020) at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland where she has conducted this research through the Center for Dance, Music and Theater. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary the term hip hop is defined as, “a cultural movement associated with especially rap music.” Nonetheless, the term has always included 4 elements; breakdancing, rapping, Djing/MCing and graffiti writing. All of these individual art forms can be referred to as hip hop and each has its own rich history worth exploring (this research will solely focus on hip hop dance). Additionally, it is important to note that hip hop goes beyond art forms. It is a culture. With hip hop being known as a street born culture it has sometimes been difficult to gain the respect of academia. However, it is clear to those who have learned and lived hip hop that the genre is built on the preservation of history and political resistance. Hip hop dance has evolved over time and has become a big part of American culture within the last decade (Hazzard-Donald). Many students are becoming interested in the dance form and have embodied the movement into their social culture. However, it is important for those doing the movement to understand the history behind it.
