President’s Report

Spring weather is finally arriving, what a welcome relief from the chilly winds of Winter. With Spring comes our annual swap meet, which many of us look forward to as well. Your swap and catering committees have been working very hard in the background organising and putting in place arrangements for another successful swap. Rosters have been displayed in recent Journals. At this meeting, to be held on Thursday the 7th September, final details will put in place. Remember this is our one and only fundraising event for the year. Funds raised help to support the future of our club and subsidise our annual fees. In other words, we need your help to make this yet again a wonderful experience for the many visitors to our swap. Speaking of our club, the club room renovations have been completed. JMR have done a wonderful job, very professional and ably supported by our own John Wilson attending to the plumbing and overseen on behalf of the club members by Bill King. Our thanks are extended to all parties – top job. A couple of quick points:— 1. Annual donations to worthy organisations—please forward your submission by writing— marked “attention GVMVDC Committee” by the next meeting on the 28th of September. 2. We are a couple of months/meetings away from the November 9th Annual General Meeting. Please consider nominating for a position.

See you at the September meeting. Bill Winters From the Editor I said back in the June Journal that I would do a feature on the 1914 Delage GP racer that Cal and I saw at Up the Creek Workshop in Castlemaine. I mentioned this to Cal and he suggested that he could write the article. He’d had contact with the owner and the restorers of the car so would have much more detailed information than me. I found a couple of magazine articles on the car, so added some detail from them, and our article grew and grew! Well done Cal – top work. As Bill has noted, the renovations of our clubrooms are completed, and look great. I’m sure the Catering Committee members and our Librarian will all be very pleased with the results. There’s still a bit of work for us – the contents of the kitchen and library have to go back in! Updated Swap rosters are in this Journal. Please check to make sure you can attend at your allotted time. See the organisers if you can’t be there, or if you’re not listed but want to help. If you’re a fan of XR GT Falcons, there will be a gathering of them at the Museum on the afternoon of the swap – well worth a visit! There are plenty of other events in our calendar over the next couple of months – great time to get our older out. If you’re not receiving a monthly email advising of a new Journal being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send a message to the Club’s email address (top of page 2) and I’ll add you to the list. Over 140 members now get this monthly message. See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone! Brendan Walsh

Our long-time member Bruce Hargrave is having a major solo exhibition, comprising some forty water-colours which will be exhibited for the first time in his own home "CALROSSIE" in Euroa. Apart from being a penny farthing/MGB/Honda 2000 pilot, Bruce is an artist of note, and I look forward to seeing his exhibition. I suggest we gather for coffee (of course!) at the bakery in the main street of Euroa. (Binney St) at 10am. Bruce suggests that we bring our lunch (which we can get at the bakery) to his place, from 11am, where we can have lunch in his garden. Bruce will have the urn on; byo chair and lunch. AOMC Report

AOMC August Delegates Meeting, Darnum, Gippsland Saturday 26th August 2017

The guest speakers were John Lewis from VicRoads and Andrew George, Chief Executive Officer, Society of Automotive Engineers.

News from VicRoads is that : A. they are still working on transferring the Club Permit scheme details on to the Master Data Base. (The cost they are talking about seems crazy, just to move data from one computer to another. B. They are working on ways for Club cars to be transferred to surviving spouses better. C. The Club Permit Scheme is to be reviewed in 2019 Ideas on the table are “Should historic vehicles stand alone.’ (ie) Is it necessary for the car clubs to be involved? D. The use of original number plates.

Andrew George talked on what is modified and what is not. The simple answer is any changes from the original spec, then it’s modified. Answer Simple again – before you spend any money or change anything, talk to your friendly engineer. If you are restoring a truck then definitely you need to work with an engineer. We have approached the Secretary about getting a speaker from the insurance industry to give their approach on what is modified. If you are importing a car make sure your agent has checked on ASBESTOS. One buyer found his import in a number of pieces as customs had removed all gaskets including head gasket / clutch / brakes.

September 2017 1914 Delage Type S Grand Prix

By Callum Walsh After making their Grand Prix debut in 1912, Delage arrived at Amiens on the 12th of July 1913 for the Grand Prix of the ACF (Automobile Club of France), commonly known as the French Grand Prix, with three Type Y race cars. Two cars entered the race and performed quite well, finishing in a respectable 4th and 5th, taking the fastest lap of the day in the process. Less than a month later, on the 5th of August, the ‘Y’s were entered in the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club of the West (of France) at Le Mans, where they achieved a 1-2 finish. Two Type Ys were then taken across the Atlantic for the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day 1914 where they placed 1st and 3rd. Fuelled from this success, Delage prepared four revolutionary Type S race cars for the 1914 French Grand Prix at Lyon in July, just 3 months later. The masterpiece of an engine included twin overhead cams, 16 valves (4 per cylinder), the first successful use of desmodromic valve gear and a 5-piece crank with ball bearing mains. The chassis boasted 4-wheel brakes and a 5-speed gearbox. Three of the cars were entered, and the fourth was a development and testing car that didn’t race. Unfortunately for the team, the race didn’t quite go as they would’ve hoped. After spending portions of the race placed as high as third, two of the cars were forced to retire between 350 and 400 miles due to engine trouble. The third car went on to finish 8th but that result was overshadowed by the dominant 1-2-3 finish of the Mercedes team.

The 1914 Delage team 35 Arthur Duray, 23 Albert Guyot and 9 Paul Bablot.

th Duray finished 8 , the other two retired.

Designer Arthur Michelat, driver Louis Duray and Louis Delage

Just a few weeks later, Europe would be immersed by World War 1. In 1915 all four would be sold to the USA, the first arriving in July, purchased by David Joyce for use by American motor racing pioneer Barney Oldfield. Oldfield first raced in Chicago towards the end of July followed by several more races until its last appearance in 1915 competing for the Astor Cup at Sheepshead Bay, on the 9th of October. Whilst racing in the Astor Cup, Oldfield badly damaged the engine in his car and it did not reappear until after its rebuild by Harry Miller over the American winter months. The remaining three were sold to Harry Harkness, the son of Standard Oil Company heir Lamon V. Harkness. On the 13th of May 1916, the Harkness trio of cars appeared at the Sheepshead Bay Grand Track, a track which Harkness co-owned. Two of the cars raced that day, one finished quite well but suffered an engine fire during the race. Unfortunately, the second car is believed to have been destroyed following an accident which killed both the riding mechanic and driver, who was Harkness’ chauffeur.

Page 9

September 2017

A fortnight later, Harkness’ two remaining cars were joined by Oldfield for the Indy 500. One of the Harkness cars broke in qualifying, the other crashed out of the race. Oldfield completed the race and placed 5th. By May 1917, Oldfield’s car had been fitted with a Miller engine, interestingly it was the Delage chassis fitted with a Miller engine that gave Miller his first ever race win. It is thought that all three cars raced against each other again at the Sharronsville Sweepstakes in Cincinnati on the 30th of May 1917 however, no confirmation of this has been found. Harkness continued to race his pair of cars throughout 1917 until America’s involvement in WW1 put a stop to racing. Following WW1 around 1919, Barney Oldfield continued to compete across the USA, including a significant involvement with board track racing and Oldfield’s own city to city ‘staged’ races. The Delages re- appeared together on the west coast of the USA around 1921/22 however, one had received a Duesenberg engine and became known as the ‘White Special’.

In 1922, a car retaining the correct Delage engine was purchased by Peter White for George McCarey, the manager of the Maroubra Speedway and imported to Australia. Although retaining its original engine, it was fitted with a Miller updraft carburettor, presumably fitted by Harry Miller himself when he was maintaining the car. Sometime during 1923/24 the car appeared at Aspendale,  Sporting Globe, 11 Feb 1925 Melbourne. After being raced a couple of times at Aspendale in Weekly Times, 12 Dec 1925  1925, McCarey competed in the inaugural races at the Olympia Speedway, Maroubra on the 5th of December where he won two races for the day.

In 1926 McCarey sold the car on to Jack Burton in Sydney, who converted the car for road use, including the addition of a boat-tail 2-seater body. Following some financial trouble, Burton was forced to sell that car at auction in August 1939. The winning bidder was Ken Hume, who paid a total of £100. Hume then removed the body and ran the car at the 1947  Sydney Morning Herald, 2 Aug 1939 Rob Roy hill climb.

Hume sold the car around 1948 to Lex Davison. Davison had intended to restore the car to its 1914 GP glory however little work was done apart from have the engine worked on by Barney Dentry. Unfortunately, Davison never got to drive the car before his fatal accident in February 1965. In 1974 Diana Davison (Lex’s widow) commissioned Jack Nelson to undertake a complete rebuild. Diana also put the car on the market at the same time. Interest was shown from around the world, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, but thankfully for “us” (the Australian movement) Stuart Murdoch was the successful purchaser in 1975. Nelson then spent the following three years completing the restoration, with the car making its debut at the 1978 Mt Tarrengower hill climb.

Page 10

Stuart used the car sparingly, until 2014 when he sent the car to Grant Cowie at Up The Creek Workshop (UTCW) in Castlemaine for a mechanical refresh. UTCW rebuilt the engine, gearbox and diff however, on a test drive a crack developed between the exhaust valve and water jacket from an old repair which gave way, rendering the block irreparable. A careful mix of ‘old school’ ingenuity and modern technology was used to recreate the extremely complex block. The block was 3D scanned into a digital model which was then used to create a 14-piece 3D printed sand mould into which molten cast iron could be poured to create a faithful reproduction of the original block. This revolutionary process was extremely successful and is an insight into the future of restoring rare and unique vehicles when parts are no longer available. If you’re interested, Jon Faine’s short piece on the ABC’s 7:30 Report (link below) is a great summary of this process.

VSCC Rob Roy Hill Climb, Christmas Hills – 13th August 2017 I had mentioned to librarian Neil that Cal and I were planning to go to Rob Roy again this year, after enjoying the day last year. It’s always better to travel in a classic, so I accepted his offer of a lift. It was an easy trip through Seymour and Yea in the HK, and we arrived at about 10am. The weather was pretty good and the day was very similar to last year, with each vehicle having several runs throughout the day. During the lunch break, the kids again had their chance to show their driving skills in their billy carts. They ran down the starting straight of the uphill course. Some of them were fairly basic but others were very classy – the Vanwall looked excellent!

The Veteran Car Club had been asked to provide a static (and possibly active) display, so there were a few familiar cars and members.

1913 OVERLAND tourer, 1916 tourer, 1913 BUICK tourer, 1911 HOTCHKISS roadster The star of the show was obviously the 1914 Delage Type S Grand Prix car, which had a crowd around it for most of the day. And it sounded great heading up the main straight! We felt that it deserved a story of its own, so Cal wrote one. We all had a great day and have now made it an annual outing! Brendan Walsh

Club Run to Byramine Homestead – Sunday 20th August 2017 A good Club run, except when the bloke supposedly leading the way stopped in Katamatite to wait for slower cars, and cars of course then went every which way! But everyone got there (I think?) and enjoyed it. Elizabeth Hume must have been a tough old bird to have even survived there with her nine children. In 1842 there wasn’t a supermarket or hospital just down the road. The property is now owned by Kelly Brothers, growing over a thousand acres of veges under sprinklers. 37 years after Elizabeth Hume established her homestead, another Kelly brothers group passed through – this is approximately where the Kelly gang crossed the Murray on their way to the Jerilderie hold- up. No doubt the location of the homestead was known to the Kellys, probably as a place to avoid. Federation Picnic, Marong – Sunday 27th August 2017 This event always attracts a lot of interesting cars. It was down a bit this year, with the oval a little over half full, perhaps due to the cold weather. That wind was lazy; it just went straight through us. The imminent shower at about 1pm encouraged the organisers to draw the raffle early and wave off the Golden Oldies at the start of their rally on their way to St Arnaud. Alan Lavis

I had a “failure to proceed” on the way to Marong, just east of Wallenjoe Swamp. The points in the electric fuel pump have been a problem occasionally in the past, and usually a quick clean and tapping the pump lightly with a tool will be enough to get it going again. But not this time – the pump would go for a few seconds and then stop again, so the engine would stop a few seconds later. While I was pondering my next course of action, a couple pulled up behind me. They lived nearby and were on their way to Marong too! He was a Morris enthusiast and had owned several Oxfords before. He agreed with my diagnosis and offered to go home and get a spare fuel pump that he had. He was back in about 10 minutes and the pump was changed over 5 minutes later. No serious issues getting to Marong and no problems at all going home. So thank you to Frank – I’ll be in touch soon to return your pump when mine is fixed! Brendan Walsh

Two Great Days in Bundaberg On Saturday, July 29 a group of migratory birds from the Goulburn Valley area, holidaying in Bundaberg and Moore Park, Queensland, were treated to a special morning to a private car collection on a cane property on the outskirts of Bundaberg. This property, owned by Barry and Coral Hosking comprised a massive shed with approximately 80 cars, a majority accumulated from deceased estates and local areas. This day was organised over a cuppa session at local identities Peter and Sandra Gentle’s property in Moore Park. Some GVMVDC Inc members attended, and with an off-the-cuff remark Peter told the group about a friend with a collection of cars and would they like to see them. Peter and Sandra’s collection comprised a 25 Chev, 1954 Mark 1 Zephyr, 1940 Austin Wasp, 1939 Morris E Ute, 1955 Austin A50 and a 1918 Sunshine Model A Tractor (which Peter is restoring for the Gayndah Museum) and his favourite 1972 Kenworth W925. The group who were invited included GVMVDC members Dennis and Helen Paul, Col and Glad Grace, Brian and Faye Briggs and friends Brian and Viv Barrett. Upon arrival at Hoskings’ property all were welcomed with a special morning tea provided by Coral and Barry and following a chat and a "get to know" it was time to get a look at this magnificent shed crammed with 80 cars, utes, a Mack 86 Superliner (better than new) truck, 30 tractors (which included a large harvester), 16 old style Victa lawn mowers, 50+ stationery engines, memorabilia, antiques and old furniture. All the cars displayed were acquired in "as-found" condition and ranging from early 50's to late 80's era. Have you ever seen a group of children let loose in a lolly shop????? To complete the day all those who had the privilege of attending this great day were personally invited by Barry and Coral Hosking to visit again next year. Barry and Coral were thanked by all who attended and Peter and Sandra for organising the day. Needless to say there was a reasonable amount of "hoping and dreaming" by all that evening. Glad Grace
