CASEY IN THE CAGE Playing the second game of a back-to-back, Pittsburgh will likely give the nod in net to Casey DeSmith, a winner in three of his last four starts and 7-3-0 overall in 11 appearances (10 starts) this season. Of the 38 goaltenders who have started 10 or fewer games this year, DeSmith leads the pack with seven wins. DeSmith has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his last five starts dating back to February 28 against the Islanders, and during that span, DeSmith’s goals against average (1.21), goals allowed (5) and save percentage (.956) rank second in the NHL among goalies with a minimum of five starts.

The Pittsburgh netminder has also played some of his best hockey against Buffalo. In three career starts, DeSmith is 2-0-1 with a 1.66 goals-against average, .944 save percentage and two shutouts. He enters tonight’s game having not allowed a goal versus the Sabres in his last 119:52 minutes.

SID SETS SIGHTS ON 1,300 POINTS Sidney Crosby enters tonight’s game three points away from becoming just the 36th player in NHL history to record 1,300 points. Crosby would join Joe Thornton (1,521) and Alex Ovechkin (1,303) as the only active players to reach the 1,300 point mark. If he were to complete the feat tonight in his 1,017th game, Crosby would become the eighth fastest in NHL history to 1300 points:

Pettersson made his NHL debut with Anaheim on February 15, 2018 and from that date to the end of last season has seen his point total grow with each passing year.

PENALTY KILLIN’ IT The Penguins’ penalty kill went a perfect 3-for-3 last night against Buffalo and chipped in with a shorthanded goal from Zach Aston-Reese. The goal gives the Penguins four shorthanded goals on the year, a figure that ranks fourth in the NHL:

Team SHG Montreal 7 Boston 5 Columbus 5 Pittsburgh 4 Four Teams 3

Pittsburgh has also killed off a season-high nine-straight opposing power-play opportunities. The Penguins 83.0% success rate at home on the penalty kill is 9th best in the NHL.

CROSBY VS. BUFFALO Sidney Crosby enters tonight’s game with points in 11 of his last 12 games (8G-9A) versus Buffalo. He has recorded at least one point in 40 of 45 career games played against them, while his 67 points (23G-43A) are the most he’s tallied against any non-Metropolitan Division opponent.
