*Member Spotlight* Cathy Cabaniss

Cathy Cabaniss currently serves as a SCDA Regional Coordinator for the Lowcountry. Cathy moved to Charleston in spring 2011 and is now dancing her eighth season with Annex Dance Company. She is the dance teacher at Alston Middle School in Summerville. As a performer and teacher, she maintains a love of learning and continuing to be a dance student by taking dance classes when life allows. Cathy graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Dance from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.

What’s Cathy Up To? • She recently performed in a collaboration of the Charleston arts community titled "Moments Captured" with Annex Dance Company. The performance was in response to the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art's current exhibition "Southbound: Photographs of and about the New South." • In the classroom, she is teaching Bharatanatyam (classical Indian dance), , and interpreting dance-- specifically Pearl Primus' Strange Fruit.

News from Florence One I send good cheer, to each of you. I would like to share that last year I took 8 of my students, to Corker College to auditions for the dance program and I am happy to say that Sapphire Murphy, Olyiva Gregg, have been and are now currently enrolled into the Corker’s College Dance Program for 2018 and 2019 school year. We are still awaiting the news of three remaining dancers that are still pending, Ricky Tate, TyQuan Jones, and Jaydin Pate. It feels good knowing that we are creating a space for young dancers to continue their training and exploration of dance. I am happy and proud of each of my dance students. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Andrew Jackson Middle School 8th grade students researched, choreographed, and taught Lancaster County "Celebrities" as a "Lancaster County Dancing with the Stars; a Night of the Arts". I started dance technique classes and training when I was 10 years old and continue at Move Dance Academy in Hartsville, South Carolina. I am on a Competitive Senior Dance company. She plans to attend College of Charleston or Coker College.

Olyvia Gregg: Following high school, I intend to pursue higher education in the areas of performance and mass communications. My goal is to create the foundation for a career that branches all areas of my unique skill set. With a growth-oriented mindset, I will broaden my talents to reach behind the scenes area of performance and work to manage projects of my own creation.

Tyquan Samuel Jones: I am a graduate of South Florence High School, in the fall I am planning on attending Coker College. I will double major in dance education and psychology. I am very happy about this opportunity and the endless possibilities of working with leading dance professors and guest artists from around the world. I am humbled by the teaching and mentorship I have gained and received from Mr. Breedlove over the years. He truly has been a foundation and rock during my high school years and even now as a young adult. He has instilled in me and other students that education is ‘key’ to all things in life.

Pine Street School’s Dance Ensemble attended Ballet Spartanburg’s Beauty and the Beast and The Nutcracker. The students performed on Veteran’s Day and are preparing for the annual Black History program and the spring production of Pine Street Dance Ensemble Veteran’s Disney’s Mary Poppins! Day Program
