  • The Charismatic Leadership and Cultural Legacy of Stan Lee
REINVENTING THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO: THE CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL LEGACY OF STAN LEE Hazel Homer-Wambeam Junior Individual Documentary Process Paper: 499 Words !1 “A different house of worship A different color skin A piece of land that’s coveted And the drums of war begin.” -Stan Lee, 1970 THESIS As the comic book industry was collapsing during the 1950s and 60s, Stan Lee utilized his charismatic leadership style to reinvent and revive the superhero phenomenon. By leading the industry into the “Marvel Age,” Lee has left a multilayered legacy. Examples of this include raising awareness of social issues, shaping contemporary pop-culture, teaching literacy, giving people hope and self-confidence in the face of adversity, and leaving behind a multibillion dollar industry that employs thousands of people. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary.

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 71: Jon Favreau Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Hello ladies and gents. This is Tim Ferriss, and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss show, where I deconstruct world-class performers to figure out what makes them tick, and moreover, what are the tools, tricks, tactics, routines, books, whatever, secret snacks that you can replicate – that you can actually use in your daily life or in your career, or in your personal endeavors and your journey into life itself. Wow, that was profound. Anyway, my guest for this episode is just a tremendous, tremendous man. He is an actor, writer, director, and producer. His name is Jon Favreau. I’ve been hugely impressed by Jon, and we’ve had an opportunity to spend some time together. He is a man of many talents. He burst onto the acting scene with his role in Rudy. Then he established himself as a writer with the iconic cult hit Swingers, in which he starred, and many of you have seen it. We have a lot of stories about Swingers, which I was surprised by, and I had done a lot of homework. Then Favreau made his feature film directorial debut with Made, which he also wrote and produced. His other directing credits include Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Elf, and that was a real turning point for him. So he did get into that, and I did not know that he was involved with Elf before I really dug into it.

  • Independence Day: Resurgence
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (2016) ● Rated PG 13 for sequences of sci fi action and destruction, and for some language ● $165,000,000 budget ● 2 hrs ● Directed by Roland Emmerich ● Produced by Lynn Harris, Matti Leshem, Douglas C. Merrifield ● The film was produced by Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures QUICK THOUGHTS ● Phil Svitek ● Marisa Serafini ● Demetri Panos ● Sara Stretton DEVELOPMENT ● The possibility of a sequel to Independence Day had long been discussed, and the film's producer and writer, Dean Devlin, once stated that the world's reaction to the September 11 attacks influenced him to strongly consider making a sequel to the film ● Soon after the success of the first film, 20th Century Fox paid Dean Devlin a large sum of money to write a script for a sequel. However, after completing the script, Devlin didn't turn in the script and instead gave the money back to the studio, as he felt the story didn't live up to the first film. It was only approximately 15 years later, that Devlin met up with Roland Emmerich to try again, having felt that they had "cracked" a story for a sequel ● Devlin began writing an outline for a script with Emmerich, but in May 2004, Emmerich said he and Devlin had attempted to "figure out a way how to continue the story", but that this ultimately did not work, and the pair abandoned the idea ● In October 2009, Emmerich said he once again had plans for a sequel, and had since considered the idea of making two sequels to form a trilogy ● On June 24, 2011, Devlin confirmed that he and Emmerich had found an idea for the sequels and had written a treatment for it ● In October 2011, however, discussions for Will Smith returning were halted, due to Fox's refusal to provide the $50 million salary demanded by Smith for the two sequels ● Emmerich, however, made assurances that the films would be shot backtoback, regardless of Smith's involvement ○ Resurgence filmmakers were reported to be preparing versions of the film both with and without Will Smith.
