This exclusive event will take place from 12:00Pm to 1:30Pm on Wednesday October 22, under Cirque du Soleil’s iconic Blue and Yellow Big Top at Atlantic Station. Guests will be encouraged to donate an item of gently used or new professional clothing to be granted access. Attendees will be treated to a special preview performance by the cast of Amaluna, followed by a Q&A forum featuring members of Amaluna in collaboration with some of Atlanta’s most well-respected businesswomen and personalities – Mara Davis, Melissa Long and Mary Moore. I further argue that these three features of flop, interruption, and audience play are distinctively facilitated by Shakespeare in both text and performance which, in turn, demonstrates the potential of both clown and Shakespeare to not only disrupt theatrical conventions, but to imagine new relationships to social and political power structures. To this end, I ally the flop with Jack Halberstam’s sense of queer failure to investigate the relationship between Macbeth and 500 Clown Macbeth. -

The study focuses most closely on the years 1993 – 2012 and the shows that Cirque has produced in Las Vegas. Driven by Las Vegas’s culture of spectacle, Cirque uses elaborate stage technology to support the wordless acrobatics for which it is renowned. By so doing, the company has raised the bar for spectacular entertainment in Las Vegas I explore the beginning of Cirque du Soleil in Québec and the development of its world-tours. -
