HIGHLIGHT-Rod Read (Scotland) From the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, Rod is proving that networks of kites are the future of sustainable energy. He has spent the last 5 years experimenting with rotary kite network designs which he believes will supersede current wind turbine technology. “Daisy” concept flies rings of power kites, line networked, at a wide radius around a lifting kite tether. The power kites are set to expand their rings while rotating. The wide separation of tense ring & kite tethers allows reliable torsion transmission from multiple kites simultaneously. Early prototypes generated over 500W. Short network lines are efficient so there is less drag per kite. The small rotary kite networks meet the needs of travellers and remote communities. Rod shares his kite turbine ideas as Open Source Hardware. He says that “By not patenting, the designs can be shared online with people who need solutions now and they can’t be monopolised to further concentrate investor wealth.” 2. Team Airnergy (Singapore) Team Airnergy is a local team that flies Revolution quad-line kites, as well as single and dual-line kites. Kite ballet is the flying of dual or quad-line kites with a set of synchronized movements to music. This is akin to a dance or ballet performance where the “dancers” on the stage are now the kites in the sky. Airnergy have performed in various festivals in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. 3. Antonio Lino (Portugal) Born in Portugal, Antonio Lino has been flying sport kites for around 20 years. He ventured out to creating artistic inspired kites after being inspired by the works of artists monochromatic. His aim is to reach out to people by showing them simple kite shapes and inspire more people to open the doors of modern art through kites. This year, his new creation kite is inspired by Urs Fisher. 4. Hong Ha Pham (Vietnam) Hong Ha Pham is from Ba Ria - Vung Tau Kite Club, Vietnam. He started his career as a professional kite flyer since 1997. In 2000, he established the Kite Club. During nearly 20 years of operation, the Kite Club has joined many kite festivals and competitions in and outside Vietnam. Notably Ba Ria Vung Tau Kite Club built the kite which was recorded and recognized as the record of the largest kite in Vietnam. In Vietnam, people including himself love to fly traditional flute kites. In the past, it was impossible to bring flute kites to other countries outside Vietnam since it is made from bamboos and therefore too big to carry around. Hence, he is the first kite flyer who created the method of assembling flute kites from smaller components. As a result, he was able to bring flute kites to international kite festivals around the world. 5. 8-STAR Pro Quad Kite Team (Malaysia) The 8-STAR Pro Quad Kite Team is a group of fun, enthusiastic and dedicated quad line fliers from Selangor, Malaysia that have been actively flying Quads since 2013.They are committed flyers who deeply believes in giving the audience the unique show on what the team sport can offer during kite festivals.
