Explanatory Notes for Development Assessment Local Heritage Register Amendments to the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, Schedule 8 and 8A of the Integrated Planning Act 1997, the Integrated Planning Regulation 1998, and the Queensland Heritage Regulation 2003 became effective on 31 March 2008. All aspects of development on a Local Heritage Place in a Local Heritage Register under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992, are code assessable (unless City Plan 2000 requires impact assessment). Those code assessable applications are assessed against the Code in Schedule 2 of the Queensland Heritage Regulation 2003 and the Heritage Place Code in City Plan 2000. City Plan 2000 makes some aspects of development impact assessable on the site of a Heritage Place and a Heritage Precinct. Heritage Places and Heritage Precincts are identified in the Heritage Register of the Heritage Register Planning Scheme Policy in City Plan 2000. Those impact assessable applications are assessed under the relevant provisions of the City Plan 2000. All aspects of development on land adjoining a Heritage Place or Heritage Precinct are assessable solely under City Plan 2000. ********** For building work on a Local Heritage Place assessable against the Building Act 1975, the Local Government is a concurrence agency. ********** Amendments to the Local Heritage Register are located at the back of the Register. Designed in the traditional grid-like layout, popular in the Victorian era, the cemetery is demonstrative of the early European community’s need for burial grounds. The fabric, setting and context of the site are all important. The cemetery has distinct sections which show its evolution from a Victorian cemetery, established in the 1870s, to one that includes newer forms of burial, such as the war and lawn cemeteries. Within the cemetery grounds is an early and intact shelter built in 1891 and the sexton’s residence, a substantial interwar timber house on the corner of Gympie and Kitchener Roads. The cemetery has an important Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial section on the site which contains 386 World War II graves. Mature trees on the site, which include rows of Camphor Laurel and Cypress Pine trees, add to the site’s significance and visual appeal. History “Cemeteries not only help explain our past, they also provide a sense of continuity and identity. So our burial grounds reflect vital aspects of our social, religious, folk, architectural, literary and botanical history which are not found in such a combination in any other place.”1 1 After the declaration of Queensland as a colony, separate to New South Wales, in 1859, the new Queensland Government was anxious to increase the colony’s population and to encourage agricultural settlements.

ROBER T ANDERSON, GHEEBELUM, NGUGI, MULGUMPIN HIS T O R Y LIFE AND TIMES HISTORY LIFE AND TIMES of Robert Anderson, Gheebelum, Ngugi, Mulgumpin, is a community and personal history of an Aboriginal elder of the Quandamooka area. The life experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders are varied and are many and access to their knowledge is essential to the process of continuing our traditions. HISTORY LIFE AND TIMES OF ROBERT ANDERSON GHEEBELUM, NGUGI, MULGUMPIN Community and personal history of a Ngugi Elder of Mulgumpin in Quandamooka, South East Queensland, Australia. Nations and people are largely the stories they feed themselves. If they tell themselves stories that are lies, they will suffer the future consequences of those lies. If they tell themselves stories that face their own truths, they will free their histories for future flowerings. Since its opening in 1883 “Boggo” has created controversy. Home of lifers and killers, both men and women have called the prison “home”. Between 1883 and 1913, Boggo Road acted as a place of execution. Forty-two individuals were hanged from the Gaol gallows. Most of the Gaol’s secrets are yet to be revealed. From December 2012, Boggo Road will reopen to the public after being closed for 7 years. The Newman State Government, after a long review process, has decided to award management rights to Jack Sim, director of Boggo Road Gaol Pty Ltd. Jack Sim is well known to the people of Brisbane as the man behind Ghost Tours Pty Ltd. Operating tours of many historic sites such as Toowong Cemetery, South Brisbane Cemetery, and previously Boggo Road Gaol, Mr Sim and the staff of Ghost Tours have earned a great reputation for quality experiences for locals, interstate and overseas visitors. Jack Sim first started tours at Boggo Road Gaol in 1998, and has spent 15 years lobbying to be given the opportunity to de- velop the tourism potential of this historic site.

  • Aboriginal History of the Princess Alexandra Hospital Site
ABORIGINAL HISTORY OF THE PRINCESS ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL SITE by Dr Ros Kidd Preface The Diamantina Health Care Museum Association Inc, formerly the History and Archives Committee of the Princess Alexandra Hospital was awarded a Brisbane City Council Local History Grant to research and write a report on the Aboriginal History of the hospital site. The group commissioned Dr Ros Kidd, a respected local historian to undertake the project. In early 2000, Dr Kidd presented this report, which will contribute to the ongoing research, interpretations and displays on the site. Dr Kidd has prepared the following report after extensive research of available literature and archives. The report recognizes that the land on which the Princess Alexandra Hospital has evolved is traditional country and acknowledges the importance of this recognition to local Aboriginal people. The site is an important healing place, with connections to traditional culture as well as connections to contemporary healing practised by today's health care professionals. As a community we have a responsibility to maintain physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, cultural and social health, and healing. This report is a point of reference for the ongoing work of the Diamantina Health Care Museum Association Inc, the hospital and the community at large. Together we will maintain the power of healing in our community. Preface complied by Jan Leo, Museum Committee in consultation with Colleen Wall (Arts Queensland) and Robert Anderson (Indigenous Advisory Committee). 21 July 2000 Introduction Aboriginal people had been moving around and through the south Brisbane area for thousands of years prior to European arrival. Documentation discussed in this brief study demonstrates that this regular and extensive contact continued late into last century, until prohibited by white expansion.

  • Jane Brack and John Colclough
Bracks in Australia: The Story of Jane Brack and John Colclough From a small farm upon a rocky hill in Dublin, the Brack family has spread like dandelion seeds in the wind. Jane Brack is one of the seeds that travelled furthest, settling in the broad landscape of Queensland, Australia. This is the story of Jane and the generations that followed. Jane Brack is the daughter of Patrick Brack and Ann Mason, and the granddaughter of Anthony Brack and Rose Smyth. At some point, it is likely that all three generations lived in the stone house on the Brack farm beside the Ballycorus smelter tower. The small farm is in the townland known as Puck’s Castle, Dublin, County Dublin. We have no birth record for Jane Brack; we gather she was born about 1859 since immigration records show her as 27 years old when she arrived in Brisbane, Australia, in February of 1886. With the year 1859 in mind, however, a christening record for one “Julia Brack,” daughter of “Patt” and “Rose,” becomes intriquing.1 Julia’s christening was performed 1 April 1860 at Kingstown Parish, while the family was living at Ballycorus. Is it possible that Julia and Jane are the same person? There are good reasons to believe that they are. First, Julia is one of the accepted alternate names for Jane.2 Additionally, Patrick and Anne lived in and around Ballycorus, where Patrick was employed at the smelter. And most compelling, there are no other known “Patt” or Patrick Bracks in County Dublin, nor any subsequent appearances of Julia Brack to be found.
