The Castle Tail Credits (Full credits are below the end narrative) The closing narration: As with the start of the film, Dale Kerrigan is given extensive wrap-up duties by way of voice over narration at the end of the film. (This transcript is taken from the Roadshow DVD release of “the poolroom edition”). The narration cranks up when Darryl and Dennis realise they’ve won in the High Court. Dale (v/o, over the aftermath in court): “Dad was stoked, but suitably restrained. He reckoned the other side didn’t know what to do with themselves. Dennis was so stunned he went all quiet. Dad reckons he almost cried. In fact I think he did … (over Dennis trying to hold back a tear)…Mr Hammill just sat there for ages …he reckoned it was the most satisfying victory he’d had in forty seven years… Dad reckons it’s important to be noble in victory, so he spoke to the other Q.C.” Darryl (shouting across the bench to the Q.C.): “Oh hey …” Dale: “… the one who had a go at Wayne …” Darryl: “Bad luck… ya dickhead!!” National Nine News replaces the courtroom images. Dale (v/o): “The case was all over the news that night. Newsreader Ian Ross: “Good evening …first tonight, a landmark decision in the High Court today has confirmed the age-old saying, ‘A man’s home is his castle’ … when the huge Airlink consortium tried to compulsorily acquire a string of homes on Melbourne’s outskirts earlier this year, they didn’t expect a fight … well, they got one …” Reporter (over images outside the court): “It was a case of Darryl v. Goliath in the High Court of Australia today when tow truck driver…” Dale (breaking in over the TV news): “Mum reckoned it’s real funny how one day you’re not famous, and then the next day you are... famous, and then you’re not anymore … (over a party in the Kerrigan castle) Dale (v/o): Dad had one of the biggest parties EVER that night back at home. He invited everyone from the neighbourhood …his friends, family, in-laws …” Con (speaking to Dennis Denuto): “This case has totally regained my faith in the legal system …” Dale (v/o): “Mr Hammill even brought his son along… (as an in-joke Hammill’s son is played by Tony Martin) Darryl: “I’m really pleased to meet you Adam …” Dale (v/o, over Mr. Petropoulous): “Everyone was having a real good time … especially Mum and Dad …(over Darryl and Sal) … I’ve never seen ‘em so happy …Dad invited everyone up to Bonnie Doon …” Farouk (to Lawrence Hammill): “I fix you with special Farouk pressure system …” Dale (v/o): “Mr Hammill said he’d love to come …I don’t think he’d ever fished for carp …well that party went on and on and on …and Dad smiled all night …” Darryl (shouting to Sal as she hands out nibbles): “See, this is why we need that patio …” Sal: “Yeah …” Dale (v/o): “The victory was reported in all the papers …it became known as the ‘Kerrigan Decision’ …” Darryl (to Jack, introducing Lawrence): “Oh Jack, don’t thank me … this is the bloke.” Dale (v/o): “Although Dad said as far as he was concerned, it was Lawrie’s victory …” Darryl: “Now don’t forget Dennis here, either …Dennis” (Dennis raises his glass) Dale (v/o): “That was the beginning of a string of good luck for our family…” (Wayne in his cell taking down his snap of the family from the wall) Dale (v/o): Six months later, we got notice that Wayne would soon be eligible for parole. Dad rang Mr Hammill, who was more than happy to come out of retirement again … Wayne said the parole board couldn’t believe their eyes. When Mr Hammill walked in, he reckons they granted him parole out of shock…’ (Dennis getting out of a convertible in the street in front of his new office) Dale (v/o): Dennis became very well-known after the case …and people came from everywhere to hire him …He won a very big case, a class action, against people who put lead in the landfill 15 years ago …” (Dennis walks into his office past a sign reading ‘Dennis Denuto Solicitor & Barrister As Seen on TV’) Dale (v/o): “I think Mr Hammill helped him there too …and Dad is very happy for him. He even bought himself a new photocopier... (the photocopier in action) …one that never breaks down … and guess what? Mr Hammill did go up to Bonnie Doon …” (Hammill in a photo in the poolroom holding up a modestly sized rainbow trout) Dale (v/o): “…at first Dad thought it was out of politeness …but it can’t be ‘cause he goes up there all the time …” (the camera pans over to a framed photo of Darryl holding and pointing at a trout, and Hammill next to him also pointing at the fish) Dale (v/o) “… And he and Dad still hit it off as good as they did the first day they met … (over a greyhound) … Coco never won another race, but she had a son which Dad called Son of Coco …He hasn’t won yet, but Dad has high hopes … (over a shot of the new patio) … Dad did finish the patio, in a Greek style … and the extension, and he even put up those big iron gates …(shot of the Toorak gates at the front of the drive) …that he and Steve had gotten for a bargain that night in Toorak …” (Steve’s girlfriend with baby) Dale (v/o): “Steve got back with Kerry, his old girlfriend …eventually they got married and had a little boy, three weeks later …” (Steve comes in reading from the paper) Steve: “Baby capsule … Still in box …” Dale (v/o) (over Con and Tracey helping their kid work over a heavy bag): “Con and Tracey had a kid too …he’s already taken up kickboxing …they are great parents.” (The Carpenters’ “We’ve only just begun” mixes in under at this point) Dale (v/o) “Wayne started helping Dad with the tow truck and really made a go of it. Dad’s even more proud of him now than when he was in jail! It was Wayne’s idea to move into tray trucks …pretty soon, they had two, then three, then EIGHT!” (over a pan of the assorted tray trucks) Who knows when it’ll stop? Mum reckons 11. She’s as proud as punch with all this … And guess what? She DID take up pottery!” (shots of Sal’s inestimable pottery mugs, including a CU) Darryl (v/o): “… She didn’t even need lessons!” (Darryl with a glass and bottle of VB sitting in his Greek patio) Dale (v/o): “And Dad, well, he reckoned he got everything he’d ever wished for …he often used to sit out on the patio and just smile to himself …(shot of electricity tower, followed by shot of Darryl’s castle) … and they still live at 3 Highview Crescent …even though it’s only them two livin’ in it …And Dad still calls it his castle …” (a plane roars overhead just above the camera) Dale (now to camera): “My name’s Dale Kerrigan, and that was my story…” (Over the framed snap of the family outside the castle which has threaded through the show, The Carpenters’ “We’ve only just begun” swells up to foreground, the image fades to black, and end titles roll) Written & Conceived by Santo Cilauro Tom Gleisner Jane Kennedy Rob Sitch Directed by Rob Sitch Executive Producer Michael Hirsh Producer Debra Choate Production Designer Carrie Kennedy Art Director Ben Morieson Director of Photography Miriana Marusic Editor Wayne Hyett Casting Jane Kennedy Original Music Craig Harnath Music Supervisor Jane Kennedy 1st Assistant Director Annie Maver Costume Designer Kitty Stuckey Darryl Kerrigan Michael Caton Sal Kerrigan Anne Tenney Dale Kerrigan Stephen Curry Steve Kerrigan Anthony Simcoe Tracey Kerrigan Sophie Lee Wayne Kerrigan Wayne Hope Dennis Denuto Tiriel Mora Con Petropoulous Eric Bana Lawrence Hammill Charles (Bud) Tingwell Federal Court Judge Robyn Nevin Farouk Costas Kilias Ron Graham Bryan Dawe Jack Monty Maizels Evonne Lynda Gibson Mr Lyle John Benton John Clifton Laurie Dobson Chairman John Lee Council Officer Stephanie Daniel Sergeant Mick Kennedy John Flaus Heavy at door Les Toth Barlow Representative Erik Donnison High Court Judges Roger Neave Tony Evans Robin Miller Kerry Julie Kulpinski Steve & Kerry's child Sam Gleisner Mr Petropoulous Sebastiano Liotta Mrs Petropoulous Josie Noviello Federal Court Lawyer Linda Keane High Court Stenographer Marilyn Chestnut High Court Clerk of Courts Julian Scarff Assistant to Chairman Marie-Therese Byrne High Court Lawyer Clare O'Sullivan High Court Lawyer Warwick Begg Federal Court Stenographer Maria Theodorakis Federal Court Clerk of Courts John Evans High Court Lawyer Michael Roland Con & Tracey's son Matthew Giordanella Larry Emdur As himself Ian Ross As himself Adam Hammill Tony Martin Camera Operators Santo Cilauro Miriana Marusic Camera Assistant Joanne Donahoe 2nd A.D./Casting Assistant Susannah Mott Musicians Craig Harnath Martin Lubran Dave Carter (The following were deleted on some versions): ( Sean McLeod Russell Smith Rob Burke Backing Vocals Suzi Ahern Chris Doheny Assistant Cryss Plummer) Recorded by Ross Cockle Recorded at Hothouse Make-up and Hair Steven Clode Continuity Anny Beresford Sound Recordist Chris Izzard Boom Swinger Jim Dunwoodie Gaffer Johnny Earthmover Best Boy Jeff Hodges Rigging Grip Freddo Dirk Clapper Loader Gary Scott Lighting Assistant Danny Christie Second Unit Lighting Cameraman Robin Plunkett Camera Assistant Warik Lawrence Gaffer Brett Hull Wardrobe Michael Davies Runners Kaylene German Megan Spencer Production Accountant Jenny Davies Production Assistant Pauline Hirsh Accounts Assistant Annabel Wang Art Department Assistant Josh Morieson Wardrobe Assistant Charlz Chan Video Split Operator Matthew James Special Effects/Armourer Aaron Beaucaire Catering Sweet Seduction Insurance/AON Tony Leonard Camera Equipment Cameraquip Laboratory Cinevex Film Laboratories Laboratory Liaison Ian Anderson Louie Keramidas Negative Matching Rohan Wilson Optical Effects Ian Sheath Colour Grading Tim Morgan Titles Optical & Graphic Telecine Transfer Complete Post Telecine Edel Rafferty Scott McLean Kine Dfilm Tim Trumble Sound Post Production Labsonics Sound Supervisor Ian MacWilliams Sound Editor Peter Graham Dialogue Editor Stephen Witherow Foley Artist Tracy Grimshaw Dolby Consultant Steve Murphy Foley Editor George Parton Optical Soundtrack Atlab, Australia Stills Photographer Emmanuel Santos Legals Greg Sitch The Producers would like to thank -: Australasian Jet Pty Ltd, Australian Paper, A.

PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE BEYOND JOURNALISM: INFOTAINMENT, SATIRE AND AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION STEPHEN HARRINGTON BCI(Media&Comm), BCI(Hons)(MediaSt) Submitted April, 2009 For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Australia 1 2 STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made. _____________________________________________ Stephen Matthew Harrington Date: 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.

  • Uncorrected Proofs No Unauthorized Reproduction
Prelims.qxd 7/3/12 3:37 PM Page ix Foreword: Probing the Meta-Prison It is oftenUncorrected forgotten that, during the 1960s and into the mid-1970s, the United States was a global leader in progressive penality, much as it had beenNo about a century earlier when Gustave de Beaumont and Alexis de Tocqueville crossed the Atlantic to learn about American innovations in humane punishmentunauthorized for the benefit of European rulers.1 Through practical experience and in-depth policy analysis, federal authorities had arrived at the view that the prison is an institution that feeds, rather than fights, crime; that the building of custodial facilities should be stopped and juvenile confinement phased out; and that only a vastlyproofs enlarged effort at rehabilitating inmates, whose constitutional rights were just beginning to be recognized and enforced by the courts, would improve the output of criminal justice. Local authorities were experimenting in correctional reform on multiple fronts, from jail processing to community mental health to prisoner unionization, with the aim of limiting the scope reproductionand injurious effects of captivity. The inmate count was going down slowly but steadily; decarceration was on the agenda; and mainstream penologists, historical analysts, and radical critics were nearly unanimous in holding that the penitentiary had entered into irremediable if not terminal decline. With some 380,000 behind bars circa 1973, the United States seemed poised to hoist the banner of liberty aloft again and to lead other nations onto the path to “a world without prisons.”2 Then came the triple backlash to the socioracial turmoil of the 1960s and the stagflation of the 1970s that turned penal trends around on a dime and sent the country into a carceral frenzy on a scale, span, and duration unknown in human history.
