An Overview of Feline Coat Colour Genetic Pet Care June 2014 Please Note: Feline coat colour cannot be determined by a DNA test alone. There are a number of genes that cannot be determined via genetics and infl uence coat colour. These include the O (orange/red) gene, ORIVET GENETIC PET CARE the W (dominant white) gene, the Silver gene and the S (spotting) gene. To determine the coat colour of a Suite 102A/163-169 Inkerman Street cat the genetic information, pedigree and a photo of the cat tested is required. St Kilda 3182 Australia The nomenclature used to report traits may vary from laboratory to laboratory. In general all results are PO Box 110 reported as NORMAL (does not carry the mutation), CARRIER (carries one copy) or AFFECTED (has two St Kilda 3182 VIC Australia copies). All aff ected animals will show that trait. The nomenclature used below is that as established and published by Dr Lesley Lyons. t +61 3 9534 1544 f +61 3 9525 3550 DILUTE (BLACK to GREY/BLUE; ORANGE to CREAM) © Copyright 2014 Orivet MLPH gene c.83delT mutation Reference: Ishida Y, David VA, Eizirik E, et al. Coat colour is diluted as follows: > DNA Profi ling and Parentage d/d – DILUTE Black is diluted to Blue / Chocolate is diluted to Lilac / Cinnamon is Confi rmation diluted to Fawn / Red is diluted to Cream. > Personalised Genetic Health Has one copy of the Dilute allele (D/d) cat is a Carrier of dilute. Wellness Plans D/d – CARRIER of DILUTE No dilution of coat colour. May produce a dilute off spring if mated > Genetic Pet Care Program for with another carrier. Veterinarians Has no copies of the Dilute allele (D/D) the cat is full colour. > All Natural Pet Care Products D/D – DOES NOT CARRY DILUTE No dilution of coat colour. Will not produce any dilute off spring. > Optimal Breed Selection AGOUTI (BANDED HAIR to SOLID) ASIP gene c.122_123delCA Mutation Reference: Eizirik E, Yuhki N, Johnson WE, Menotti-Raymond M, Hannah SS, O’Brien SJ. Molecular genetics and evolution of melanism in the cat family. Curr Biol. Mar 4 2003;13(5):448-453. RESULT INTERPRETATION – BREEDNG OUTCOMES Has two copies of the Agouti gene (A/A). Cat will have agouti banded A/A – AGOUTI hair. All off spring will have agouti or banded hair. Has one copy of the Agouti gene and one copy of the non-Agouti A/a – CARRIER OF NON-AGOUTI gene (A/a). Cat will have agouti banded hair and off spring can be agouti or non-agouti depending on the genetics of the breeding pair. Has two copies of the non-Agouti gene (a/a). Cat will have solid a/a – NON –AGOUTI colouration. If this cat is bred to a non-agouti then only non-agouti off spring will be produced. RESULT INTERPRETATION – BREEDNG OUTCOMES b/b – CHOCOLATE Has two copies of the Chocolate allele (b/b). Cat is Chocolate (Brown). Has one copy of the Chocolate allele (B/b). Full colour or possibly Chocolate if the cat B/b – CARRIER OF CHOCOLATE also carries Cinnamon. Full colour cat does not carry brown or cinnamon alleles. Has no copies of the B/B – DOES NOT CARRY ANY CHOCOLATE Chocolate allele (B/B). b l/ b l – CINNAMON Has two copies of the Cinnamon allele (b l/ b l). Cat is Cinnamon. Has one copy of the Cinnamon allele (B/ b l or b/ b l). Full colour or possibly Chocolate if B/ b l or b/ b l – CARRIER OF CINNAMON the cat also carries Chocolate. Full colour – Has no copies of the Cinnamon allele (B/B, B/b or b/b). Full colour or B/B, B/b or b/b – DOES NOT CARRY CINNAMON possibly Chocolate.
