March 26Th, 2019 Stewart/Whitley 213 West 35Th St, Suite 804 New York City, NY 10001 Dear SMTD/University of Michigan, Missy March 26th, 2019 Stewart/Whitley 213 West 35th St, Suite 804 New York City, NY 10001 Dear SMTD/University of Michigan, Missy Beck is essential to the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance faculty. She is more than just a teacher who taught us steps, she is a person who cared about each and every student’s wellbeing, from the students who entered with two left feet to those that had decades of training already under their belt. For many students who are admitted into the SMTD, dance is not their ‘primary instrument’ and yet Missy from day one finds a way to make everyone have the confidence and skills they need to find personal success both in the classroom and out. As a Broadway casting director I audition dancers with exceptional skill sets on a daily basis, but also actors who are intimidated by the simplest of steps. The one element that must always be present in someone’s performance to still be viable, no matter their dance background, is confidence and joy. Missy approaches all of her students from day one with this exact approach. Give them joy and confidence in the steps they are able to do, and they’re likely watchable, and ultimately hirable. Missy Beck has touched so many alumni’s lives both in their time in Ann Arbor, and years beyond. She truly cares about her students and their careers post training. It would be a huge disservice to the University, and frankly the industry at large, to not let Missy continue teaching and inspiring tomorrow’s professionals in her current capacity. We urge you to reconsider. • TOOTSIE Screenplay by Larry Gelbart
TOOTSIE Screenplay by Larry Gelbart March 8 1982 MACRO SHOT. LIKE AN ABSTRACT PAINTING Only one area in focus. It is an actor’s character box. We SLOWLY PAN to see: a monocle, different pairs of eyeglasses, rubber appliances, various makeups, a collection of dental applications, an assortment of brushes. A hand comes into frame and removes a small bottle. WE FOLLOW to see it is spirit gum. The other hand enters frame and uncaps the bottle. FOLLOW one hand as it applies the spirit gum to a cheek. We see only a portion of the cheek. Now the hands apply spirit gum to a rubber scar. Again we FOLLOW the hands as they place the scar upon the actor’s cheek. The ritual continues as we watch a moustache being applied. The hands then search out the dental appliances and pick one. We study the movement as the appliance is inserted into the actor’s mouth. Throughout the above we HEAR someone mumbling, but we cannot make out the words. Suddenly we HEAR: A VOICE Next! A BLACK SCREEN: OR SO IT SEEMS. Really a darkened theatre. We’re looking out toward the auditorium. VOICE (continuing) Michael...Dorsey, is it? PULL BACK to hold MICHAEL in fg., looking out toward the darkened auditorium. He is an actor, 40 years old. He holds a script. MICHAEL That’s right. CAMERA CIRCLES to reveal Michael’s face. The scar is present, as is the moustache. He also has perfect teeth. VOICE Top of twenty-three. MICHAEL (with feeling) “Do you know what it was like waking up in Paris that morning? Seeing the empty pillow where...wait a minute, cover your breasts! Kevin is downstairs! My God -- what are you? PAN to reveal a BURLY MALE STAGE MANAGER, cigar butt in mouth.

  • Low Male Voice Repertoire in Contemporary Musical Theatre: a Studio and Performance Guide of Selected Songs 1996-2020
LOW MALE VOICE REPERTOIRE IN CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL THEATRE: A STUDIO AND PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF SELECTED SONGS 1996-2020 by Jeremy C. Gussin Submitted to the faculty of the Jacobs School of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Doctor of Music Indiana University December 2020 Accepted by the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Music Doctoral Committee __________________________________________ Ray Fellman, Research Director __________________________________________ Brian Gill, Chair __________________________________________ Jane Dutton __________________________________________ Peter Volpe December 10, 2020 ii Copyright © 2020 Jeremy Gussin iii Preface This project is intended to be a resource document for bass voices and teachers of low male voices at all levels. For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic.

Philips, Jr. John & Dorinda Smith present The Sirote Theatre in the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center The Sirote Theatre in the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center OVATION THEATRE UAB Opening nights at Theatre UAB are OVATION nights. OVATION UAB features refreshments and conversation with the director and designers before the show, as well as a post-performance meet & greet with the cast and crew. But that’s not all. OVATION’s mission is to support and sponsor our students working backstage and performing in Theatre UAB productions. Membership dues ranging from $50 - $1500+ help off-set the cost of tuition for each student to participate in the productions. Join us! Park early, socialize, learn about the show and enjoy hors d'oeuvres, desserts, coffee and light refreshments before an evening of great theatre. OVATION THEATRE UAB is a perfect way to assist our talented students and have lots of fun! OVATION THEATRE UAB Membership Forms are in our Theatre UAB Season Brochure or contact Program Manager, Mel Christian at 934-3237 or [email protected]. We’d love to see you at our next OVATION! A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR CURRENT OVATION UAB MEMBERS Founding Members Russell Drummond, Col. Daniel D. Hall, Patty McDonald, Carol Odess, Chandler S.
