In particular, it will elaborate how some elements of Howl, be it the form or the theme, can be found in lyrics of Bob Dylan’s and Patti Smith’s songs. Along with Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and William Seward Burroughs’ Naked Lunch, Ginsberg’s poem is considered as one of the seminal texts of the Beat generation. Their works exemplify the same traits, such as the rejection of the standard narrative values and materialism, explicit descriptions of the human condition, the pursuit of happiness and peace through the use of drugs, sexual liberation and the study of Eastern religions. All the aforementioned works were clearly ahead of their time which got them labeled as inappropriate. Moreover, after their publications, Naked Lunch and Howl had to stand trials because they were deemed obscene. Like most of the works written by the beat writers, with its descriptions Howl was pushing the boundaries of freedom of expression and paved the path to its successors who continued to explore the themes elaborated in Howl. -

It must present the struggle between Eros and Death, between the instinct of life and the instinct of destruction, as it works itself out in the human species. This struggle is what all life essentially consists of, and the evolution of civilization may therefore be simply described as the struggle for life of the human species. And it is this battle of the giants that our nurse-maids try to appease with their lullaby about Heaven. -Sigmund Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents (1930) Allen Ginsberg. Jack Kerouac. William S. Burroughs. These are lauded as pillars of the Beat Generation. The 1950's saw the rise of a radically new literary movement, diverging from the conventions and conformity of the past decades, with foundational works such as Ginsberg's Howl, Kerouac's On The Road, and Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Beyond challenging the literary norms, the Beats espoused experimentation with drugs, alternative sexualities, exploration of other religions and non-religion, a rejection of materialism and capitalism, and a frank portrayal of the human condition. Thus, the movement not only had it's effect in academic circles, but influenced Western culture itself, becoming the underpinnings for the 1960's counterculture and other modern radicalism. The Beats did not spontaneously appear in the 1950s. The gestation period for the movement was not easy, risking miscarriage along the way. -

ALLEN (V.O.) Some things, once you’ve loved them, become yours forever. The body breaks to the surface. Then FLIPS, David's face turning to the sky. The scene is playing in REVERSE MOTION. ALLEN (V.O.) And if you try to let them go... The body floats back to LUCIEN CARR, 20, unclothed, waist deep in the water. Drops of sweat, blood, down his back. ALLEN (V.O.) ...they only circle back and return to you. As David’s body LIFTS into the young man's arms, we see David's feet and hands are TIED together with shoelaces. The shoelaces suddenly untie. ALLEN (V.O.) They become part of who you are... A STAIN of red blood on David’s chest shrinks, vanishes. ALLEN (V.O.) Or they destroy you. David's eyes OPEN. CUT TO: INT. When most people hear the word “beatnik,” you, there’s a chasmic difference between the they probably imagine bored-looking bohemian gals in A beret-wearing, bongo-beating “beatnik” of berets and guys in turtlenecks and weird little goatees. These popular imagination and the people who created stereotypes are rooted in truth, but like the term “beatnik” and lived the Beat philosophy in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In itself, they’re not really very representative of the movement defined by the “Beat Generation” nor the people inspired by its counterculture philosophy. The reality is that the intellectuals, artists, and anti- bourgeois iconoclasts of mid-twentieth century America dressed a lot like everyone else. The Beat Generation's Impact on Neal Cassady
HON 495 English Independent Study with Dr. Joan Dean Beat to Death: The Beat Generation’s Impact on Neal Cassady The Beat Generation is one of the most influential movements in American literature. The lives of these writers are just as fascinating as their stories and poetry. The most important members and contributors were writer Jack Kerouac, poet Allen Ginsberg, and their best friend, lover, and muse Neal Cassady. These three men, as well as others along the way, would redefine the roles of men in a post-World War II America as well as create a new image for the country. Arguably, it was Cassady who was the catalyst for this movement, but he hardly wrote a word. He came to New York from Denver, where his past was fabricated and unbelievable, to have Kerouac teach him how to write. Cassady, the conman, wanted to learn from Kerouac and then from Ginsberg. He was immortalized in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road as Dean Moriarty, the rebel from Denver, who always chose adventure over responsibility. Allen Ginsberg wrote him as a “secret hero” in his most famous poem “Howl” (Ginsberg 136). Both Kerouac and Ginsberg idolized Cassady but for different reasons. Cassady himself is an enigma, his entire life story a fabrication. He grew up on the streets of Denver, stealing cars and hustling. He was also an altar boy and a father of three, and even tried his hand at writing with his unfinished autobiography The First Third. With the help of Kerouac, he managed to make his life into what would later be the embodiment of the Beat Generation. -

Handout 1 - Beat Writers Allen Ginsberg American poet, writer, and activist, Allen Ginsberg was one of the foremost voices of the Beat Generation. While a student at Columbia University, Ginsberg met Lucien Carr after hearing him play a record of composer Johannes Brahms in his dorm room. Carr went on to introduce Ginsberg to Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and Neal Cassady, and the core group of Beat writers was formed. Ginsberg attained national prominence after the publication of Howl and Other Poems in 1956. “Howl” was a sprawling poem which openly discussed homosexuality and drug use, while critiquing the materialistic, capitalist culture brewing in the United States. The publishers and booksellers of “Howl” were arrested for publishing the book and put on trial for obscenity charges — which they beat, on the basis of the poem’s “redeeming social importance.” Ginsberg is represented in On The Road as the character Carlo Marx. Excerpt from “Howl” I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night, who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz, who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated, who passed through universities with radiant cool eyes hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedy among the scholars of war, who were expelled from the academies for crazy & publishing obscene odes on the windows of the skull, who cowered in unshaven rooms in underwear, burning their money in wastebaskets and listening to the Terror through the wall. -

It will mainly focus on the original version of the poem Howl for Carl Solomon, printed in Spring 1956; and Howl, included as part of Howl and Other Poems; first published in November 1956 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti at City Lights Books. 2.0 The ‘Mimeograph’ The first version of Howl exists as a mimeograph, entitled Howl for Carl Solomon. The poem in a partially finished form, was performed by Ginsberg at a poetry reading held at The Six Gallery on October 7 1955. The performance was a catalyst in the publication of the poem, and received positive reviews ‘...The reading was delivered by the poet...driving forward with a strange ecstatic intensity, delivering a spiritual confession to an astounded audience…’ (2) In May 1956, approximately 25 copies of the poem were printed by Marthe Rexroth and Robert Creeley at San Francisco State College. -

Allen Ginsberg's “The Howl” As a Manifesto of Beat Generation Poetry
Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” as manifesto of Beat Generation Poetry For MA (English) Students at MGCUB • “Howl” is regarded as the central text in Beat Generation Poetry, much like “The Waste Land” in the ‘imagist movement’. • It describes the horror, hopelessness and frustration in the life of Beat Generation artists. • As a subculture, the movement voiced the dissent against the oppression and exploitation of the individual in authoritative society and sounded a long distressed cry for emancipation. The poem re- presents such typical feelings and was welcomed by some as a revolutionary poem. • As Skalleberg Lucas states in his essay “Candor and Apocalypse in Allen Ginsberg’s Howl”, the then American society was divided into two groups, one was the patriotic one that thought of preserving the American values while the other that thought of truth being at stake and that the USA was becoming a totalitarian state with the nexus of military-industrial- nationalist complex. • “Many writers at the time were persecuted by McCarthyists, which led to even stronger protest by, among others, academicians”. • Arthur Millers’ dramas, written around the same time like The Crucible and Death of the Salesman voiced dissent against authoritative regime and business mindedness. • Allen Ginsberg took admission in Columbia University but rebelled against the teachers for being old-fashioned and read the books that were not allowed. • Skallberg writes about the influences behind writing Howl and mentions that “in the university, Ginsberg, found friends who shared his views. The writer and former football –student Jack Kerouc, heroine and morphine addict William Burroughs, Lucien Carr who, after Ginesberg and Burroughs, failed to report the murder of David Kammerer, was convicted of manslaughter, and thief and drug addict Herbert Huncke, became those who Ginesberg spent most time with”. -

The Beat Hotel The beat hotel. Resting on 9, rue Gît‐le‐Cœur, an oasis for whomever is willing to enter. No one to turn the cold shoulder. No one to judge. Creativity ensues along with cocaine, heroine, pot, LSD, prostitution, homosexuality, away from the United States, away from the rules and regulations, a way of life in France. A new cultural phenomenon begins. Anti‐conformist, underground experimentation, raucous behavior, all in this new home, this beat hotel, beginning the beats. Attacking social restrictions, trying devious deeds, more explosive activities, there are no closed minds. Only tolerance. A final destination from running away. When walking through all of the rooms, a myriad of observations penetrates the closed mind. New ways of getting high. New ways to depict emotions. New ways to live life openly. A spinning, cardboard machine, slot‐filled, flashing lights, tickles and teases the ocular senses, creating flickers of dream‐like images, new perceptions, spiritual enlightenment, a freeing of the mind. Essays which put one’s perspective into a whole new light. Praising freedom and spontaneity. A poem in the shape of an a‐n‐n‐i‐h‐i‐l‐a‐t‐i‐n‐g mushroom cloud reflecting a love of the bomb. Controversial ideology? Lover of death? The ingenuity of humanity? A conducive environment. A terminal of minds. A crossroads of academics. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Hal Chase, Will Burroughs, Greg Corso. Members of a new, extraordinary group joined at the hip from the beginning. Their destinies intertwined from as early as college. Men who had abnormal thoughts and sexual needs.
