Boiling is an effective heat transfer mechanism that is central to a variety of industrial processes including electronic systems, power plants, and nuclear reactors. Micro-/nano- structured surfaces have been demonstrated to significantly enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) during pool boiling, but there is no consensus on how to predict the structure-induced CHF enhancement. In this study, we develop an analytical model that takes into consideration key mechanisms that govern CHF during pool boiling on structured surfaces, namely, capillary wicking and evaporation of the liquid layer underneath the bubble. The model extends existing wicking-based CHF theories by introducing the competing evaporation mechanism. The model reveals a wicking-limited regime where CHF increases monotonically with the wicking flux, and an evaporation-limited regime where additional increases in the wicking flux do not significantly affect CHF. The model predictions are shown to agree with experimental CHF data from the literature for boiling of water on surfaces structured with square micropillar arrays. A parametric study is performed for such micropillared surfaces and has identified the optimal structure based on the competition between wicking and evaporation, capillary pressure and viscous resistance, and conduction and liquid-vapor interfacial resistance. Introduction Boiling is a key industrial transport process central to the operation of power plants, nuclear reactors, electronic systems, and other applications. While nucleate boiling offers the potential for high heat dissipation efficiency by taking advantage of the latent heat of vaporization, there exists a critical heat flux (CHF) limit above which an insulating vapor layer covers the heated surface. Above CHF, the heat dissipation efficiency is reduced by orders of magnitude compared to nucleate boiling. Therefore, it is of vital importance to accurately predict CHF to inform the design of surfaces that extend this limit. Over a half-century ago, Zuber [1] derived a hydrodynamics-based model that accurately captures the pool boiling CHF on flat surfaces [2-4]. Recent experimental studies [2, 3, 5-18] have shown that using micro-/nano-structured surfaces can enhance CHF well above Zuber’s limit. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the structure-induced CHF enhancement, including increased three-phase contact line length [11, 16], microconvection around the bubble [19], increased departure frequency of coalesced bubbles [3], and liquid rewetting via capillary wicking [2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14]. Among these mechanisms, capillary wicking has been the most widely agreed upon, with strong support from experimental data [2, 5, 10, 17]. A number of CHF models have been developed [2, 8, 10, 17, 20, 21] based on this wicking mechanism, sharing a common formulation of qCHF=+ q CHF,f q w , where qCHF,f represents the critical heat flux predicted for a flat surface (i.e., without the capillary wicking) and qw represents the amount of CHF enhancement induced by capillary wicking. While is usually calculated with established CHF models based on hydrodynamics [1], the balance of forces acting on bubbles [22], or gravity- driven rewetting [8, 10], there is no consensus on how the wicking-induced CHF enhancement qw should be predicted. 3 Table 1 summarizes the empirical, analytical, and semi-analytical models available to predict CHF on structured surfaces. All symbols are defined in the source references, except that a generic symbol ( fit ) is used to represent the fitting parameters in the empirical and semi-analytical models. Many wicking-based CHF models rely on empirical relations that are developed by correlating CHF with experimentally-measured wicking properties [2, 17, 20]. Ahn et al. [17] characterized the wicking capability of structured surfaces by measuring the volume flux of a droplet wicked into a structured surface, and assumed that CHF increased monotonically with the measured wicked volume flux. Their results demonstrated wicking to be a key mechanism for CHF enhancement on structured surfaces. Rahman et al. [2] adopted the same method as Ahn et al. [17] to characterize the wicking capability of a broader range of structured surfaces, including biotemplated nanostructures, square micropillar arrays of different diameter, height, and pitch, and hierarchical structures. Their experimental data strongly supported a linear relationship between the CHF and the measured wicked volume flux. Kim et al. [20] measured the wicking distance of droplets spreading on structured surfaces and fitted the wicking distance as a square-root function of time. A wicking factor was defined using the coefficient of the fitted relationship, and CHF was reported to scale linearly with the wicking factor. Despite good agreement with experimental data, these correlations strongly depend on the experimentally measured wicking properties, limiting their applicability to the design of surfaces for enhanced CHF. Recently, efforts have been made to develop analytical and semi-analytical models (including fitted parameters) to predict the wicking-induced CHF enhancement [8, 10, 21]. Dhillon et al. [10] derived an analytical model for CHF based on rewetting of a dry spot on the boiling surface and predicted an optimal structure spacing resulting from the competition between capillary pressure and viscous resistance. Kim et al. [8] derived a model for CHF on structured surfaces assuming that CHF was governed by liquid-supply capability from the gravitational and microscopic pressure potentials including capillary and disjoining pressures. Li and Huang [21] used Kandlikar’s model [22] for qCHF,f and derived the wicking-induced enhancement qw as a linear function of the wicking front velocity in the surface structures. Their model was semi-analytical, with the coefficient of the linear relationship fitted using experimental data. We note that existing wicking-based CHF models have focused on developing wicking parameters to characterize the wicking behavior of liquid on structured surfaces, followed by the formulation of a relationship between CHF enhancement and the wicking parameters developed. A variety of standalone 4 wicking parameters have been proposed, among which Xiao et al. [23] and Allred et al. [24] have defined representative parameters for linear wicking and radial wicking, respectively. Xiao et al. [23] reported that the volumetric rate of linear wicking follows the Washburn-type square-root law; a propagation coefficient was introduced for the square-root relationship. Allred et al. [24] analyzed the volumetric rate of radial wicking and introduced a superhydrophilicity metric defined as the product of capillary pressure, flow permeability, and the height of the structure to characterize radial wicking behavior.

In this study, a total of 2,562 data points of CHF in uniformly heated round vertical tube for water were collected from 5 different published sources. The data consisted of the following parameter ranges: 93.7≤G (mass ≤ 2 ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ 2 flux) 18,580 kg/m s, 0.00114 D (diameter) 0.03747 m, 0.008 L (length) 5 m, 0.26 qc (CHF) 9.72 MW/m , and −0.21≤L (exit qualities)≤1.09. A comparative analysis is made on available correlations, and a new correlation is presented. The new CHF correlation is comprised of local variables, namely, “true” mass quality, mass flux, tube diameter, and two parameters as a function of pressure only. This study reveals that by incorporating “true” mass quality in a modified local condition hypothesis, the prediction of CHF under these conditions can be obtained quite accurately, overcoming the difficulties of flow instability and buoyancy effects. The new correlation predicts the CHF data are significantly better than those currently available correlations, with average error 2.5% and rms error 11.5% by the heat balance method.

The result show the CHF data in two-phase flow condition base on inlet and outlet condition in both case of heater pin with and without wire. However, experimental CHF data are rarely published, remaining in the archives of the authors or in obscure technical reports of an organization. The Purdue University-Boiling and Two-Phase Flow Laboratory (PU-BTPFL) CHF database for water ¯ow in a uniformly heated tube was compiled from the world literature dating back to 1949 and represents the largest CHF database ever assembled with 32,544 data points from over 100 sources. The superiority of this database was proven via a detailed examination of previous databases. A point-by-point assessment of the PU-BTPFL CHF database revealed that 7% of the data were unacceptable mainly because these data were unreliable according to the original authors of the data, unknowingly duplicated, or in violation of an energy balance. Parametric ranges of the 30,398 acceptable CHF data were diameters from 0.25 to 44.7 mm, length-to-diameter ratios from 1.7 to 2484, mass velocities from 10 to 134,000 kg m2 s1, pressures from 0.7 to 218 bars, inlet subcoolings from 0 to 3478C, inlet qualities from 3.00 to 0.00, outlet subcoolings from 0 to 3058C, outlet qualities from 2.25 to 1.00, and critical heat ¯uxes from 0.05 Â 106 to 276 Â 106 Wm2.

To predict the occurrence of critical heat flux in horizontal tube, an extra correction factor to account for flow stratification was applied. Both derived tables were used to predict the effect of high heat flux and tube blockage on critical heat flux occurrence in boiler tubes. Moreover, the horizontal tube look-up table was used to predict the safety limits of the operation of boiler for 50% allowable heat flux.

NABBI Research Reactor Division, Research Center Jiilich, Jiilich, Germany Abstract Under normal operating condition, heat transfer from the fuel plate to the coolant occurs by convection phenomena. In case of force convection, the rate of the heat being transferred is proportional to the temperature difference between plate surface and coolant temperature. In most research reactors of MTR type the coolant flow is turbulent that results in an enhancement of the heat transfer. The matter of fluid flow analysis for the reactor core is the determination of flow rate and pressure losses resulting mainly from irreversible process of friction and velocity and height change. Hydraulic calculation is made using iterative method. The results of this calculation are provided for heat transfer analysis by the HEATHYD code. The physical and mathematical model of the heat transfer of HEATHYD includes the equation for thermal conduction and Newton's law of cooling. After completing experimental verification of the HEATHYD model, it was applied to calculate the thermohydraulics of a plate type MTR. It was assumed that the core consists of 48 fuel elements generating a total power of 30 MW. The coolant flow and heat transfer for the hot channel was analyzed. In the hot channel case, the saturation temperature has been partly exceeded by the clad surface temperature with the result of subcooled boiling. In the case of the average channel, the clad temperature does not reach the saturation temperature. The results of calculations show that the safety margin to flow instability represents the limiting parameter regarding safe design and operation.

The purpose of this work is to find the effect of magnetic field magnitude and direction on the Nusselt number in single and double heater geometry. The improving thermal efficiency in the horizontal and vertical placement of heaters is also presented. The governing equations of mass conservation, momentum conservation, and energy conservation are solved by using a central-moments-based Lattice Boltzmann scheme. The air pocket generated around heater raised incorporating magnetic effects. The heat transfer through this advancement has been explored quantitatively and abstractly. The results shows that with the development in the volumetric applied force at the bubble-fluid interface, the bubble boundary layer thickness around the square heater lessened which cause the Nusselt number augmented. Through the parameter study it found that the Nusselt number can be essentially extended by altering the course of magnet shafts, and that film rising outwardly of the bubble. The improvement and advancement of vapour phase in various heater arrangement made two column of bubble rises at the same time, which rose above each heater and in the end changed into one column of bubble.

Such a release process is known as ‘Blowdown’. Accurate modeling and prediction of the blowdown process is important in determining the consequences of venting operations and the design conditions required for vent and flare systems. The predicted information such as the rate at which the fluids are released, the total quantity of fluids released and the physical state of the fluid is valuable and helps in evaluating the new process designs, process improvements and improves the safety of the existing processes. Blowdown events, amongst other transient processes, are the subject of particular interest to the chemical, oil/gas, and power industries. In the process plants, particularly in the hydrocarbon industry, there are many large vessels and pipelines operating under pressure and containing hydrocarbon mixture.

Bounakov INTRODUCTION The problem of calculating the critical heat flux is very important for determining the ultimate power of the MIR research reactor working FA. Good knowledge of the criti- cal heat flux parameters is an integral part of safety analysis. The thermal-hydraulics model of the MIR reactor facility primary circuit being cur- rently developed on the basis of the RELAP5/MOD3.2 code [1] allows a rather wide range of heat removal modes to be covered within the scope of a unified approach. Nev- ertheless, in spite of the universality and verification of this code, the problem of verifying the critical heat flux calculation technique for the research reactor conditions remains ur- gent. The MIR reactor is a research, thermal, heterogeneous, channel-type reactor with the core immersed into the water pool. The core is formed of beryllium units with the "turn- key" size of 150 mm. Along their axis there are single-flow zirconium channels to place working FAs and the Fild-type loop channels to place experimental FAs. The working FA contains 4 coaxially located annular fuel elements with the column made of U dioxide-Al mixture and with an aluminium alloy cladding.
