D’Andrea’s is an insightful study of expressive indi- vidualism manifested in and through key cosmopolitan sites. This book is an 5 invaluable contribution to the anthropology/sociology of contemporary culture, 6 and presents required reading for students and scholars of new spiritualities, 7 techno-dance culture and globalization. 8 Graham St John, Research Fellow, 9 School of American Research, New Mexico 20111 1 D'Andrea breaks new ground in the scholarship on both globalization and the shaping of subjectivities. And he does so spectacularly, both through his focus 2 on neomadic cultures and a novel theorization. This is a deeply erudite book 3 and it is a lot of fun. 4 Saskia Sassen, Ralph Lewis Professor of Sociology 5 at the University of Chicago, and Centennial Visiting Professor 6 at the London School of Economics. 7 8 Global Nomads is a unique introduction to the globalization of countercultures, 9 a topic largely unknown in and outside academia. Early house music was generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms provided by drum machines, [not in citation given] off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displayed several characteristics similar to disco music, which preceded and influenced it, as both were DJ and record producer-created dance music, house was more electronic and minimalistic. The mechanical, repetitive rhythm of house was one of its main components. Many house compositions were instrumental, with no vocals; some had singing throughout the song with lyrics; and some had singing but no actual words. House music developed in Chicago's underground dance club culture in the early 1980s, as DJs from the subculture began altering the pop-like disco dance tracks to give them a more mechanical beat and deeper basslines. As well, these DJs began to mix synth pop, rap, Latin, and even jazz into their tracks. Latin music, particularly salsa clave rhythm, became a dominating riff of house music. GENRES EXPLAINED As stated in this week’s ‘Track Analysis’ document, not all tracks are easy to fit in a typical genre-folder, when organising your songs. So, here are your must-know’s on each of today’s most relevant types of dance music! In this file: 1. HOUSE 2. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: JACKIN’ HOUSE 3. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: LATIN HOUSE 4. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: SOULFUL HOUSE 5. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: EDM 6. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: TECH-HOUSE 7. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: DEEPHOUSE 8. HOUSE SUB-GENRE: FUTURE HOUSE 9. TECHNO 10. TRANCE 11. DISCO 12. NU-DISCO 13. But also big movements like Hip-Hop and Hardstyle. We chose the genres that are most present in the clubs and festivals worldwide at the time of writing, and in the past decade. Also, these are the genres that most of our students play or would like to play. HOUSE Description: ‘House’ is a generic term for anything with a 4-to-the-floor beat and a BPM between 120 and 130. Many genres described here, can be seen as a subgenre or spin-off from House. Also, nowadays, ‘house’ is often used as a collective nuon for anything from Soulful to commercial Deep- or Techhouse that doesn’t fit the specific subgenre’s characteristics.

  • The Role of Kraftwerk in the Development of Electro-Funk
KRAFTWERK: MUSIC NON-STOP Chapter 9 ‘Dragged into the Dance’ – the role of Kraftwerk in the Development of Electro-Funk ‘Once upon a time, ‘the future’ was something that hadn’t happened yet. It lay up ahead of us somewhere in the distance, filled with an unknown potential whose features and even outlines were unguessable. But during the twentieth century, an extremely odd thing has happened. In the 1920s, science fiction writers began developing detailed scenarios of what the future would be like; and since World War II the technology for making those scenarios come true has been expanding at an unprecedented rate. By now, our sense of history as a linear progression into the future has collapsed. We’re living in the future today; there’s no way to escape.’ (Aikin, 1982, p.33) Jim Aikin’s article on Kraftwerk was written just a few months before DJ producer Arthur Baker, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force teamed up in New York to produce the recording ‘Planet Rock’. This was a new musical concept that matched the electronic, robot-inspired music of Kraftwerk, an emerging electronic aesthetic in African-American dance music and the improvised form rap. In the US Billboard listings, the song reached number #4 in the Black charts, and #3 in the Disco/Dance charts, and gave exposure to Bambaataa’s vision for a new electronic rap/funk sound. The new form that ‘Planet Rock’ played a large part in kick starting would later be named ‘electro funk’, and paved the way for the explosive success of Hip Hop in the years to come.
