Many years ago, I made a resolution not to make any more New Year’s Resolutions – and I have resolutely stuck to that ever since, so I can report that I have been successful for another year! Less easy to address has been the Project World and what is going on in this newly independent post BREXIT state. The major topics from last year have not gone away so I’ll mention them plus I have decided to include a new section to join the Good News, Bad News and Closing Remarks so you can expect something that reflects our new found freedom – International View. GOOD NEWS The first bit of good news comes from the BREXIT camp – the sky has not fallen in on the country as soon as we left the European Union. True, there have been a few problems and I’ll come back to those shortly but by and large, life has carried on much as normal. New Research Institute. The second bit of good news is a £100 million to Oxford University by INEOS, the chemicals giant who also do a good line in sporting sponsorship. They fund a professional cycling team (think Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas) and their Americas Cup project under Sir Ben Ainslie. -

Can America Learn to Love Cricket? June 2, 2010 Even If the Sport Doesn't Impress the Locals, the Amount of Money Involved Should
Can America learn to love cricket? June 2, 2010 Even if the sport doesn't impress the locals, the amount of money involved should. Shahan Mufti NEW YORK — A Kiwi and a Sri Lankan walk into a park in Fort Lauderdale. Sounds like the setup for a bad joke? This is, in fact, news from Florida where last week the cricket teams from New Zealand and Sri Lanka played the first ever international cricket game on American soil. It was minor history in the making, albeit a bit perplexing to some Americans who witnessed it. The young blonde at the ticketing window, for example: “I’ve never seen a cricket game in my life,” she said blithely from behind her dark sunglasses, as the strong Florida morning sun beat down through wisps of clouds, setting up for a fine day for cricket. “I’m gonna be here all day! What kind of game lasts all day?” she pouted. Americans reserve a special brand of derision for cricket, often targeting the sweater vests, tea breaks and white-collared shirts that are features of the traditional form of the game. The enigmatic rules of cricket, meanwhile, prevent any interest from budding in those few who might actually witness a game. But in case you hadn’t heard, cricket is big money. In the past decade, cricketers have become some of the highest paid athletes in the world. According to an independent survey of international sports published in March, the average salary for a cricket player in the Indian Premier League, for example, is $3.6 million, second only to the NBA where average salary is nearly $3.8 million a year. -

Francis Alphonsus Jayarajah
FRANCIS ALPHONSUS JAYARAJAH (Courtesy of Mauro Valeri) Francis Alphonsus Jayarajah, an all round athlete from St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna, simply followed his passion for life and sports. He left Sri Lanka in 1968 and became a pioneer in his own right: he became the first Sri Lankan, if not, the first man ever from the Indian subcontinent, to captain a European countries’ national cricket team. In 1987, Jayarajah was selected to Captain the Italian national team. The Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, born Francis Alphonsus Jayarajah was indeed chosen by Italy to lead it’s national team long before England chose the Chennai, India, born Nasser Hussain to lead the MCC in 1999. Jayarajah played for the Italian National team for more than two decades. During his tenure, the Italian National Team, which was inaugurated in1987, participated in all of the ICC European events. At present, the team is performing at a very high level in all major World Cricket League events. In 2011, Italy hosted the Division 4 Championship and finished second, and consequently, earned its place in Division 3. They finished fourth in the Singapore tournaments. The finest hour, however, in international cricket came for Italy and Jayarajah in the 2012 World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE. A stellar performance by the Italian team at this tournament included wins over Oman (9 wickets) and the United States of America (8 runs). Jayarajah was born on 18 June 1947 to Ligory Francis (Master) of Mirusuvil and Mary Regina Vanderkoen of Vavuniya. He joined St. Patrick’s College in January 1959 in 7th grade. -
