Wilderness Visitors and Recreation Impacts: Baseline Data Available for Twentieth Century Conditions
United States Department of Agriculture Wilderness Visitors and Forest Service Recreation Impacts: Baseline Rocky Mountain Research Station Data Available for Twentieth General Technical Report RMRS-GTR-117 Century Conditions September 2003 David N. Cole Vita Wright Abstract __________________________________________ Cole, David N.; Wright, Vita. 2003. Wilderness visitors and recreation impacts: baseline data available for twentieth century conditions. Gen. Tech. Rep. RMRS-GTR-117. Ogden, UT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station. 52 p. This report provides an assessment and compilation of recreation-related monitoring data sources across the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS). Telephone interviews with managers of all units of the NWPS and a literature search were conducted to locate studies that provide campsite impact data, trail impact data, and information about visitor characteristics. Of the 628 wildernesses that comprised the NWPS in January 2000, 51 percent had baseline campsite data, 9 percent had trail condition data and 24 percent had data on visitor characteristics. Wildernesses managed by the Forest Service and National Park Service were much more likely to have data than wildernesses managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service. Both unpublished data collected by the management agencies and data published in reports are included. Extensive appendices provide detailed information about available data for every study that we located. These have been organized by wilderness so that it is easy to locate all the information available for each wilderness in the NWPS. Keywords: campsite condition, monitoring, National Wilderness Preservation System, trail condition, visitor characteristics The Authors _______________________________________ David N. -
Andrea Wulf 20131
Founding Gardeners. The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation © Andrea Wulf 20131 This paper is based on my book the Founding Gardeners (2011), which examines the creation of the American nation and the lives of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison through the lens of gardens, landscapes, nature and agriculture. Vegetable plots, ornamental plants, landscapes and forests played a crucial role in America’s struggle for national identity and in the lives of the founding fathers.2 Golden cornfields and endless rows of cotton plants became symbols for America’s economic independence from Britain; towering trees became a reflection of a strong and vigorous nation; native species were imbued with patriotism and proudly planted in gardens, while metaphors drawn from the natural world brought plants and gardening into politics. The founding fathers’ passion for nature, plants, gardens and agriculture is woven deeply into the fabric of America and aligned with their political thought, both reflecting and influencing it. I believe, it’s impossible to understand the making of America without looking at the founding fathers as farmers and gardeners. 1 Bibliography: please refer to my bibliography in Founding Gardener (2011). 2 The term ‘founding fathers’ describes a group with a fluctuating membership. When I refer to the four main protagonists in this paper as a group - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Madison - I have taken the liberty to use the term ‘founding fathers’. 1 I’ve chosen four themes from the Founding Gardeners to discuss in this paper: 1.George Washington’s Mount Vernon: Native Species as Political Statements 2. -
Most Common Jewish First Names in Israel Edwin D
Names 39.2 (June 1991) Most Common Jewish First Names in Israel Edwin D. Lawson1 Abstract Samples of men's and women's names drawn from English language editions of Israeli telephone directories identify the most common names in current usage. These names, categorized into Biblical, Traditional, Modern Hebrew, and Non-Hebrew groups, indicate that for both men and women over 90 percent come from Hebrew, with the Bible accounting for over 70 percent of the male names and about 40 percent of the female. Pronunciation, meaning, and Bible citation (where appropriate) are given for each name. ***** The State of Israel represents a tremendous opportunity for names research. Immigrants from traditions and cultures as diverse as those of Yemen, India, Russia, and the United States have added their onomastic contributions to the already existing Jewish culture. The observer accustomed to familiar first names of American Jews is initially puzzled by the first names of Israelis. Some of them appear to be biblical, albeit strangely spelled; others appear very different. What are these names and what are their origins? Benzion Kaganoffhas given part of the answer (1-85). He describes the evolution of modern Jewish naming practices and has dealt specifi- cally with the change of names of Israeli immigrants. Many, perhaps most, of the Jews who went to Israel changed or modified either personal or family name or both as part of the formation of a new identity. However, not all immigrants changed their names. Names such as David, Michael, or Jacob required no change since they were already Hebrew names. -

(slide 1) Presiding at Communion in a Contemporary Service Before getting to the specific topic of presiding at communion in a contemporary service, allow me to do something that I think will help our discussion and time together. Let me take a look at the word “ethos” and then apply it to this activity we call “worship.” Please be patient for just a few minutes and the relevance of everything to our topic today will become apparent. In addition, I ask for your patience for me to answer your specific questions. I will do so. (slide 2) Here is a dictionary definition for the word “ethos”: ethos is the distinguishing character, sentiments, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution. If I would try to summarize this definition, (slide 3) here’s how I would do so: it’s the what and why of how something or someone exists and acts. Thus, an ethos is the defining marks in terms of perspective and practices. As you can see in the dictionary definition, a person, a group, or an institution can have an ethos. (slide 4) And, according to worship historian James White, a way of worship can have an ethos, too. As White was working on a scheme to label and distinguish different ways of worship among Protestants, “ethos” is the term he settled on to point to what’s at the heart of a distinctive way of worship. A distinctive tradition of worship, according to White, has a “dominant ethos” that characterizes it. By that he wants to point to the core character, sentiments, and guiding beliefs of a way of worship. -

Mormon Identities PRE-MORTAL LIFE, PART 1
Episode 30 Mormon Identities PRE-MORTAL LIFE, PART 1 [START MUSIC] INTRODUCTION: Welcome to Mormon Identity, a thirty-minute talk radio program that addresses Church topics important to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our host is Robert L. Millet, professor of Religious Education at Brigham Young University. [END MUSIC] ROBERT MILLET (HOST): We welcome you once again to this edition of Mormon Identity. I‟m Bob Millet from Brigham Young University. I‟m joined today by my friend and colleague Brent Top, who is the chair of the Department of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. Welcome, Brent. BRENT TOP: Thank you, Bob. ROBERT MILLET: We want to talk today really in two segments. First and the second segments, both dealing with the subject of our first estate, the pre-mortal existence, our pre-mortal life. Brent, when we think about some things that appeal to people about Mormonism, it seems to me that, that this portion of our doctrine, namely the doctrine that talks about the eternal nature of man, is particularly appealing. Have, have, have you found that to be the case? BRENT TOP: Well, I‟ve had lots of experiences with that. I remember many years ago taking some of our neighbors and friends when we lived in the Washington D.C. area, northern Virginia. Took them at Christmas time to the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors‟ Center and to see the Christmas lights around the temple. And while we were there, we were, we took them in to see Man‟s Search for Happiness, that was very prominent at that time, and was being shown in all of the visitors‟ centers. -
