At the time of writing, we’re half way through our Summer coffee mornings. A big thank you to everyone who attended or helped out. These coffee mornings were organised for us all to enjoy the company of our village and church friends over drinks and biscuits, not as fund raisers. However, a huge thank you to the generosity of all who attended and gave donations. The children's hospice, the RNLI and MRDF (Methodist Relief & Development Fund) will all benefit from your generosity. Once again - a big thank you all. Our Emmaus Course will be starting again on Thursday 26th September and we will be holding regular bible study sessions which begin on Monday 30th September. Snakes and Adders During this July hot spell I went to gather some peas from my vegetable plot when I discovered a snake tangled in the netting. Unfortunately during its struggles it had died. I disentangled it, then showed it to some of my grandchildren whose reaction varied from, “Cor!” to “Ugh!” The snake, a grass snake, was almost three feet long and was probably a female which are generally larger than males. No comment! It also looked pregnant. For identification purposes grass snakes have two yellow patches at the base of the head. If they haven't got that then you probably have an adder! In spite of the revulsion which many have towards the snake, they have a wonderful skin pattern which is very symmetrical. After photographing it, the snake was buried with due ceremony and I was tempted to put a notice on its grave saying, "Rest in peas!" BDF 8

Latest Update on the proposed Pilrow Wind Farm As most local residents will be aware, the planning application from Broadview Energy to erect a wind farm at Pilrow, Rooksbridge was rejected by the East Brent Parish Council, by most of the surrounding Parish Councils and by the planners (by delegated Authority) at District Council. In the face of the almost unanimous local opposition to this project, Broadview decided to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. This appeal is due to be heard in January 2014 and in the meantime, both East Brent PC and NoPilrow Campaign will be seeking approval to appear at the Appeal as Rule 6 parties. Basically this allows us to present further objections to the scheme other than those already submitted by SDC. Many people will now be aware that the catastrophic predictions of the Global warming/climate change supporters are proving to be almost wholly incorrect. Whilst an economic, reliable and efficient renewable energy source should always be something that we must endeavour to achieve, it is obvious to everyone that the solutions so far put forward will not only fail to do this but will inevitably cause massive harm to the UK in outlandish energy bills, redundancies and loss of competitiveness in world markets. Our children and grandchildren will not feel the effects from any climate change but will certainly be impoverished by the massive costs of trying to force inefficient and outdated technologies on the country whilst the rest of the world benefits from our folly. It is quite clear now that the main reason for renewable energy enthusiasm is the enormous profits that can be made from subsidies paid by consumers to the developers through their energy bills. Profits that developers and their political allies have encouraged, all too often by those in power who have their own vested interests to the fore. Not one renewable energy scheme would be developed without these government enforced tariffs on households and businesses. As one newspaper article has succinctly put it when referring to the many billions of pounds going into the pockets of landowners and financial institutions: “These hundreds of billions are being paid by ordinary families and small and medium-sized businesses in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest wealth transfers from poor to rich in modern European history” (http://www.thegwpf.org/benny-peiser-europe-pulls-plug-green- future/) In the meantime we hope that all who can will help us prevent this development and that you will support us in our fund raising initiatives over the next few months starting with our “Jazz” afternoon on 8th September at the Parish Hall and Green, shown in our inserted flyer. As this is written, we are still awaiting the decision on the Wind Farm Appeal. I trust that common sense will prevail and that Julie Trott and her fellow committee members will have a future without these monstrosities in their vicinity. Cymric Male Choir, Brent Knoll Church on Oct. 26th at 7pm There is an advertisement for this concert elsewhere in this issue. The concert is being organized under the aegis of St. Michael’s Music and Arts. The profits will go to the combined churches of Lympsham, East Brent and Brent Knoll. I am not a member of the committee but, as the person who made the initial contact with the choir, I have been invited to write a few lines about The Cymric (the name by which the choir is affectionately known). The first thing to note is that the choir is giving its services free of charge (although we do intend to pay for the coach travel). The choir is one of the oldest in Wales having been established in 1911. The Cymric holds concerts both at home and abroad. In the last six years it has visited Bavaria, Holland, Belgium, Italy on two occasions, Canada, France and Spain. Prior to this, the choir visited America, Germany, Hungary and Ireland. It also participated in Celtic Festivals in Brittany and The Isle of Man. The highlight of the Cymric’s Musical Year is their Annual Celebrity Concert, and during the last few years, Stuart Burrows, Ian Cuddy, Guang Yang, Jason Howard, Dennis O’Neil and Rebecca Evans have appeared as guest artistes. The choir is also proud of the fact that during a tour of Deeside in 1990 the Queen invited the choir to sing in Balmoral after she had heard them sing in Crathie Church. Because Lympsham and East Brent are also involved in the organization of this concert, tickets are being actively sold in all three villages and also in the general locality. We are hopeful that the concert will be “Sold Out” which we think will be a just reward for a choir which is prepared to travel so far for our benefit. If you feel that you would like to join us for what we think will be a special occasion, it may be advisable to purchase tickets early. They are available from Brent Knoll Post Office, the Box Office, Gwen Hatton (Lympsham), David Harris (East Brent), members of the committee or myself. Tickets are £8 (£4 for Juniors) which include a light buffet. Liam Phillips Local lad Liam Phillips is storming the world with his success. He has been crowned UCI BMX World Elite Men Champion ahead of New Zealand’s Marc Willers and Germany’s Luis Brethauer in Auckland in July of this year. The 24-year-old from West Road, Brent Knoll won every race on the way to the World Championship title, which consisted of three moto heats; he completed the 16th, 8th, quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final I spoke to dad Pete and asked about Liam’s journey to success. Pete told me he took Liam to the local Burnham-on-Sea BMX track when he was 5 years old. By the time Liam was 6, he attended the World Championship held in Brighton and became the world’s number 2 at challenge level. After this, Liam attended every World Championship and made most finals at challenge level. In 2005, BMX was announced as an Olympic discipline. At the tender age of 16, Liam left his home in Brent Knoll to live in Manchester to train daily at the National Cycling Centre. Liam won silver medals in the European Championships in 2006 and the World time trial last year. In 2008, Liam represented Great Britain aged 18, and was a medal contender at the London Olympics in 2012. He has also won a gold medal in Supercross at the World Cup in Manchester in April this year. He is now preparing to take part in the last round of the 2013 Supercross World Cup series that is being held at the USA Olympic Training Centre in Chula Vista, California in late September. Liam is currently third in the rankings and his aim is to at least keep the podium position. Liam’s long term goal is to now make it three Olympics in a row ….. so let’s all give our support to our local lad Liam Phillips for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in, 2016! At our June meeting we all had great fun when Clive Hammond-Lovett gave a workshop on willow work. We all tried our hand at it, some being more successful than others. However our handiwork turned out, it was an enjoyable afternoon. We also had an enjoyable time at our July meeting, which was our annual garden party. We were kindly invited by Frances James to hold it at Ivyclad Hall and this year the sun shone on us. It was an afternoon when we were able to relax and appreciate the lovely garden and good company. Next meetings – 18th September – Ken Budd – Minstrel Singer We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members of all ages. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month, so just come along to a meeting or contact Joy Collett - 01278 760 458. Trish Mace WI CRAFT GROUP WI Craft will meet in the Methodist School Room on Monday September 16th at 2.30pm. All knitters and natters welcome! For further details ring Margaret on 760 691. Grey mists at dawn, the day will be warm. September Moon is called Harvest moon. On the 20th or 21st, when at it’s fullest, it appears close to the Autumn Equinox. Now is the time to treat the lawn, to give a healthy start next Spring. First rake up dead grass, aerate the ground by digging a garden fork 6 inches all over the lawn, then dress with a mixture of 1 part sieved soil, 2 parts sharp sand, 1 part of sieved compost. Spread over the lawn and work in with a stiff broom. Part clumps of perennials and replant. When going BlackBerrying, carry a small bottle of white vinegar and a bit of cotton wool. If you get scratched from the brambles, dab with the vinegar to kill bacteria. Bananas do not like the cold; wrap them in newspaper, if you keep them in the fridge. Farmer’s Wife WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE Each month the BKN will have a small picture quiz – no prizes, but I hope you may enjoy guessing where the object shown is located within the Parish boundary. Last month’s object (well the June edition’s actually) is in the centre of East Ride road sign, at the junction with Manor Ride. This month’s object is a much more recent addition to the village – if you thirst after righteousness you may find it a great help in time of need! Do you know where it is? The answer and another object will be shown next month. JaPe 17

Brent Knoll House Histories Early Maps - 10 Burton Row continues the circuit of the base of the Knoll commenced by Brent Street and reaches as far as the western border of East Brent. It also contains many features which are similar in nature to those I mentioned in my June 2013 article concerning Brent Street. On the Knoll side there are the same long, narrow strips leading up the steep face of the hill, whilst on the levels side are similar irregularly shaped fields. Here, however, the difference between the two sides of the road in the 1811 map, as far as buildings are concerned, is even more pronounced. Sixteen houses are shown on the Knoll side, whilst only three appear on the levels side.

Burton Row in 1811 – East Brent to the left, Station Road by field 297 to the right.

The three houses on the levels side were: a large building now occupied by Sunnyside, a building on the corner of Middle Street (now Greystones) and Elm Tree Farm on the corner of Wick Lane. Notably, at this time, there were no houses in Middle Street itself, or in West Street (leading to Lympsham). Wick Lane did have some properties, but they will be discussed in a later article. The next house along this side of Burton Row was Burton Row Farm, just over the border in East Brent. A large proportion of the Knoll side properties were farms: Laurel Farm, Oak Hill Farm, North Grove Farm, Burton Road Farm (the Brent Knoll version), Shrub Farm, Grove Farm, Elderberry Farm and Holly Tree Farm are names which survive today, though it is not certain that all those titles existed in 1811. It is interesting to look at Kelly’s Directories in the nineteenth century, though, where the earliest (1861) entry records that of the 61 “Commercial” entries 38 refer to themselves as farmers. Of the remainder 11 are involved in retailing: 4 shopkeepers, a tailor, a butcher, a ‘post receiver’, a baker, two beer retailers and the Fox and Goose. The other dozen are: a wheelwright, three blacksmiths, two shoemakers, a corn miller, a schoolmaster, a rope and twine manufacturer, a surgeon, a mason and a gravestone cutter. During the period from 1801 to 1841, the population of Brent Knoll more than doubled, so there should be a spate of house building in the village. In Burton Row most of the farms on the Knoll side provided little room for expansion, so only two additional properties appeared, one at each end of the road: the one nearest the West Street end is probably Sunshine Cottage. Mind you, life styles have changed somewhat since then and the number more than doubled in the twentieth century. Continued on page 20 20

Brent Knoll House Histories - Continued On the levels side, however, the number rose from three to somewhere between eight and twelve. Two extra properties appeared at both ends. At the East Brent end only Burton Row Farm is shown in 1811, but two other properties are on the Tithe Map in plots numbered 260 and 261, as shown here. At the other end, one of the two additional properties later became the Post Office. Perhaps of greater interest is the row of five buildings shown between Wick Lane and West Street on the Tithe Map. At this point in Burton Row, there are two narrow pieces of land bordering the road, one on each side. The one on the Knoll side appears to have extended as far as West Street and maybe beyond and some of it still exists today (see Google map). Does this suggest that the road was much wider originally? Medieval roads were not metalled, so they soon became rutted and the only way to avoid problems was to use differing parts of a wide road. It is a little difficult to assess exactly what the five buildings represent from the Tithe Apportionment. Jesse Webb has a house and garden here, as does Thomas Millard, but that is only two houses. Another plot is owned by Chedzoy Parish, but their land is referenced as an allotment, not a house (as is the strip of land on the other side of the road). A modern Google map of the area shows the row of houses existing there today, supplemented by two or three more. Were the central five buildings from the early nineteenth century, some always being houses, some conversions from farm buildings? Finally – why was this road called ‘Burton Row’? There may be a specific local reason for the name, but the more general derivation of Burton is: a ‘tun’ by a fortified place or manor. Brent Knoll was certainly fortified and the ‘tun’ part normally referred to an outlying dairy-farm. A row is a continuous line of houses, which may refer to the Knoll side properties, but it can also mean ‘rough’ or, appropriately here, ‘reed’. John Page 21

Women’s Society What a super evening we had when we all met at Lyn's home at the end of July. The weather was so pleasant we were able to take a walk around the lovely flowers and plants or just sit and enjoy a drink near the pool. Thank you so much to Lyn for inviting us and for a very, pleasant evening. On Thursday September 26th, we meet at the home of Dot Hatfield for our, very informal, AGM and to discuss the programme for next year. If any member has ideas for an evening meeting next year please let us know - we are open to suggestions and are always grateful for things to do which we haven't tried before. Julie and I hope that you have all had a super Summer - what some lovely weather we have had. We look forward to seeing you in September. Please, if you would like to join us at one or all of our meetings, you would be very welcome to join us at Park Lodge, Brent Street on 26th September at 8.00 o'clock. Ann (760 148) Women’s Institute In July, members enjoyed a meeting and tea on a lovely sunny afternoon at Copse Hall. Thank you to Sue Boss for once again allowing us to use her home for our meeting. Again we were lucky with the weather when we visited the Lavender Farm at . We were shown the different varieties of lavender followed by a very nice tea with cakes flavoured with lavender. At the meeting at the Parish Hall on September 11th at 2.30pm, member Eileen Goundry will give a film show entitled “Waterways of the Tsars”. There will, of course, be the usual bring and buy table. Visitors are always welcome. Contact Jackie Gilbert on 760956 for further information. JMG “Meet & Eat” Meet and Eat will be held on Monday September 16th in the Nuttall Room, Brent Knoll Parish Hall. Doors open at 12.30pm. Please book with Liz on 01278 760 810 by Friday September 13th. Please note that we have increased the charge to £7 for a three course meal. We do hope that you will join us. Liz, Rosemary, Weit and Bella Brent Knoll Community Panel On Friday July 5th, Lady Gass, Lord Lieutenant of Somerset kindly unveiled ‘The Brent Knoll Community Panel’ in the Brent Knoll Parish Hall. This panel completes the wall hanging project that was initiated to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. About thirty guests, representing the artisans and many of the clubs and societies in the village, enjoyed a little party to mark the occasion. Sheila Leukens presented Lady Gass with a special rosebush for her garden. Liz Bream sent a T- towel of the Wall Hanging to the Queen and we have received a “thank you” letter and card from Buckingham Palace! Congratulations to all the artisans and thanks to those who helped raise the funds to get the works framed and make the project dream come true. Rosemary Keele Brent Knoll Classical Music Circle The Brent Knoll Classical Music Group will be restarting on Monday 23rd September at Ball Copse Hall. Sessions are held every Monday evening starting at 7.00pm and last for two hours. The term lasts until mid-December and there is a further term after Christmas. Its magnificent facade dates from around 1,230AD and is one of the best sculpture galleries in the world. The lower niches show biblical scenes above which are figures of kings, bishops and groups of angels leading up to the twelve apostles and then on to the figure of Christ which dominates all. In medieval times the ordinary people were allowed into the building on only five occasions when they had to sit on the cold stone seating round the sides of the cathedral. This occasioned the phrase of 'going to the wall.' At other times they would have to stand outside in all weathers listening to interminable services the sound of which came to them through small holes cleverly fashioned in the edifice. In the nave we saw the extraordinary roof arches whose 14th century design was aimed to prevent the tower foundations from sinking. To think that this work was done without the aid of modern tools and equipment is nothing short of miraculous. We marvelled at the detail of the figures and faces carved in stone on the pillars and enjoyed the various stories about some of the bishops and their connection with the cathedral. Each carving told a unique story, the meaning of some are now lost to posterity. We marvelled too at the intricacies of the mechanical clock which showed great detail not only of time but of phases of the moon. It is a far more ingenious piece of machinery than the one which can be seen in the Sovereign Centre in Weston super Mare! And it was built several hundred years earlier. The Chapter House, completed in 1306, is an octagonal room where the canons met to discuss catholic themes. The guide demonstrated the excellent acoustics by singing a high note which echoed round the room for several seconds afterwards. In this room people were also tried for some misdemeanour or other, the most severe penalty was to be marched down the well-worn steps to a place of execution. The guide explained in engaging detail the history of the place and the two hours flashed past. We came away having thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon which was topped by a snack and tea in the tasteful restaurant adjoining the cathedral. We thanked the guide, who, by the way, is unpaid, and hoped to return to visit the higher levels and on another occasion, the Bishop's Palace. BDF 25

Brent Knoll Flower Show with Art Exhibition Unfortunately it was held too early with it being a late gardening season, but there were some of us who did enter, so made it worth the effort. About £230 profit was made, divided with the Parish Hall. Tony and Jackie Gilbert took over from me this year, as I was not able to give it my full attention. Thank you very much to you both. Unfortunately they have now decided to resign from the committee for personal reasons, so new committee members are a must to continue. In anticipation of a new committee, I have booked the hall for 26th July 2014, so put the date down now. Please contact me on 760 612, so that we can continue the Flower Show. Marion Vining Girls just wanna have fun! There is a new group in the village with the aim of getting together once a month and doing something different. During 2014 we hope to be able to organise a couple of family friendly events, including an Easter celebration and a Summer party. We have put together a programme of events that we hope you will enjoy. I bided my time. The reason I did not pass, was partly due to parked cars, but mainly because they were riding two abreast. Riders should stay aware of other road users and either go in single file or pull in. An impatient driver can sometimes do something rash. Drivers, please pass horses wide and slowly, for everybody’s safety. Equestrian 28

B.A.D.S. B.A.D.S. next production will take place on Friday and Saturday November 22nd and 23rd, so please book the dates in your diaries now. We have a particularly interesting production already taking shape entitled CHRISTMAS AT THE MANOR. Set in what has become a National Trust property, the cast of this musical comedy with ages ranging from 8 - 80, will take you back to different periods of the Manor’s past. This year, under the experienced direction of the Brenda Walker, who recently moved to Brent Knoll, the scripted play has been compiled from ideas taken from the whole group, is now complete and already well into rehearsal. The production space will involve not only the stage but also what is called ‘avenue arena’. This involves a different seating arrangement that will provide more space for the acting and easier viewing for the audience. As we have been told, we have to work hard and learn our lines well in advance – no notes allowed on the night – we hope you will come and share our Christmas extravaganza. If you would like to take part, it is not too late. Just contact Sarah Joyce at Holywell Nursing Home in Brent Street, Brent Knoll 01278 760 601 and leave your telephone number or email address. BW Listening, Learning, Changing has announced an ambitious series of public engagement road shows designed to reach-out to residents and help shape the Council’s future together. The unprecedented series of events named 'Listening, Learning, Changing' will allow residents to have their say on the direction of the Council as it faces up to the reality of increased demand for services with significant reductions to funding. Visitors can have a go at balancing the Council's budget, representatives from the Council will be on hand to answer questions and fun activities will be available to keep children entertained. Leader of Somerset County Council, Cllr John Osman said: "This is a unique opportunity for residents to have their say on how the Council operates as we face up to the challenges of the future. "I pledged to listen to our resident's views and ideas on how they'd like their Council to operate and that is exactly what we are going to do. "It's difficult for the Council to be everything to everyone in these tough financial times. We want to give people the chance to have their say about how the Council works over the next few years, what it does and what it doesn't do. Wherever possible, we want to reflect what our residents want." 20 September - Town Centre - 9am to 3pm 21 September - Bridgwater Town Centre - 9am to 3pm 28 September - Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival - 9am - 5pm Burnham on Sea Half Marathon Sunday October 6th – starting at 11am at the BASC Sports ground, Stoddens Road, Burnham, the Burnham on Sea Half Marathon passes through Brent Knoll, Lympsham and Berrow. John Page Christian Aid, St Michael’s & Dogs September 28th Do you remember the dog show last year, held in May at Ivy Hall? Fun? A good day? Of course, and we made money for Christian Aid. So this year we are expanding a bit, adding breed (pedigree) classes and some obedience classes for those who learn obedience with their dogs. Frances James has again offered her garden and the field next door for parking, for which we are extremely grateful, so do make sure you bring enough poo-bags to clear up after your dogs, and leave it all clean. This year the profits will be split between Christian Aid and the Friends of St Michael’s, and there will also be some stalls, as well as a raffle and refreshments, you don’t need a dog to come along and enjoy the day, lending your support to these good causes. Books, cards and toys, a chance to get your pet photographed and maybe cakes and plants. Schedules of classes etc. with entry fees and times are now available at the village shop, Trophy pet foods in Highbridge and from Jenny Butters and Pauline Chadwick. Entries will be taken on the day from 11am onwards. Obedience judging will start at 12; Breed judging at 1pm, with Novelty classes following the breed classes – open to all, including children, providing dogs are over 6 months. There will be some fun things to do, as last year – calling your dog, fun retrieve, and anything else we can think of between now (writing this Aug 14th) and then! Come and join in the fun, please, and help us make a record amount of money, with or without a dog. Lympsham Gardening Club A group of enthusiastic garden club members really enjoyed their annual outing to Dunster Castle and gardens in June. Blessed with good weather, they wandered through the streets of Dunster and up into the Castle grounds taking in the views of Exmoor. Then they enjoyed meandering round the pathways of the gardens admiring the flowers, shrubs, Mediterranean terraces and the shady riverside walk. Some members also took the opportunity to have a look around inside the castle, where the rooms are well presented and information readily available. Returning to the pickup point, everyone had the same idea and ice cream became the order of the day, so not only do enthusiastic gardeners all appreciate flowers and flora but have similar taste buds too! Dates of future Meetings:- After our summer break in July and August, the next meeting will be: Tuesday September 10th when Mandy Millward will tell us about Musgrove Willows. 7.45pm start. Thursday September 12th Autumn Coffee Morning to be held at Lympsham Sports Pavilion starting at 10am. Bring and Buy and Cake stall. Plants for sale. All stall contributions welcome. Tuesday October 8th Hellebores and Winter flowers with Tony Gray from Sanders Garden World at 7.45pm. Come to and join us Mariette Denison National Open Gardens Scheme 2013 First A big thank you to everyone who helped make the Garden Open Day a success. A cheque for just over £1,000 was sent to the National Garden Scheme. Considering how hot it was it was surprising how many folk turned up. The Guides worked their magic with the teas and made double the usual takings. Thank you to the Harpers and the Osborns for allowing their gardens to be open. Is there anyone who would like to open next year in July? Sue Boss BRENT KNOLL AND MARK TENNIS CLUB July and August have been busy months at the tennis club. There have been several Summer camps for the younger juniors. The children have taken part in a variety of ball sports on the courts, overseen by club coach, Dean Cope. North Somerset League matches were completed in July and results for the club were mixed. The ladies came second in Division 7 and will be promoted next year. The men started the season well, but unfortunately injuries affected the team, meaning relegation next year. Captain, Dave Ward won the “end of league” tournament and the evening ended with a barbecue. There will be a tournament for the older juniors on Friday 30th August. Tennis juniors from Weston and Congresbury clubs have also been invited to compete. The courts are due for some major maintenance and should be cleaned and repainted by early September. The work will be carried out by Dean Cornish. For information about the club, contact [email protected] or Tel. 01934 815407. AH 33

BRENT KNOLL HARVEST SUPPER SATURDAY 19TH OCTOBER 2013 AT THE PARISH HALL AT 7PM ENTERTAINMENT BY THE “COMBYNE ‘ARVESTER” TICKETS £15 TICKETS ARE LIMITED SO BOOK EARLY FOR THIS VERY POPULAR ANNUAL EVENT. CONTACT EDDIE FULLER ON 760 308 Friends of Guiding Coffee Morning The Friends of Guiding invite you to join them for a cup of Coffee on Wednesday, 2nd October, in the Methodist Church rooms, Burnham on Sea, from 10am to 12 noon. Who are the Friends of Guiding? Well, we are a small group of ladies, still members of the Guide Movement, dedicated to helping the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, and their Leaders, in our Guiding District of Burnham on Sea. We give them any support they need, including grants towards new uniforms for the Leaders; also grants to girls going on International trips, which cost a lot of money these days, but are a wonderful learning experience they will never forget. For instance, we have just had a large group of local girls and leaders go on a trip to our International Guide Training Centre in Mexico - all self-funded. This cost each person a lot of money and they all worked so hard to raise it themselves. So this is why we are having a Coffee Morning - to raise money to help our local Guiding District in the future. Do PLEASE support us. See you there. MD

Church Christmas Tree Decorations I do hesitate to mention the fact that it is only about 16 weeks to Christmas – but last year we started making Gold and White symbols for our Christmas Trees. We really need about 30 x 3 so that each tree in our three churches has these lovely decorations. They are great fun to make and look so attractive. So if anyone who enjoys making things with a needle, cotton and gold ribbon, etc. please contact me, Sally Wingate, 760 610, then we can all meet and discuss what we are looking for – it isn’t difficult! Sally Wingate The Origins of Phrases and Sayings Blackmail: To blackmail someone is to demand money by threats, usually to expose a secret. In Scotland back in the 16 hundreds the word mail, usually spelt male or maill, was a word used for rent. This can be traced back to the old Norse word “mal”, meaning agreement. In the 16 hundreds, Scottish tenants paid their rent in silver coins. This was known as “White money”. In the 17th century, the Chiefs of Highland Clans began a protection racket, threatening farmers and traders with violence if they failed to pay to be protected, from other Clans. This soon became known as “Black money or Black rent”, the opposite of White rent! Hence, “Blackmail”, when the farmers or traders were unable to pay their stock would be sold on the “Black Market”. Another suggestion for the term Black Market goes back centuries earlier to medieval . In this time, mercenaries would travel the country selling their fighting skills to lords and nobility who were raising armies. These hardened soldiers, lived rough for most of their lives and were subjected to the elements, and had seldom if ever polished their armour, which oxidised into a blackish colour. These men soon became known as “Black Knights”. They would, from time to time, attend local festivals, taking part in jousting tournaments, the victor would win his opponents weapons and armour, usually the Black Knights would win and rather than carry an extra set of armour, they would sell their old set, which became known as the Black Market. Black Dog is an expression used to describe periods of depression and silences. Popularised during the 1930s and 40s by Winston Churchill, who suffered from bouts of depression which he called his black dogs. However, much further back in time, the Roman poet Horace, described the sighting of a black dog, as an unlucky omen with grave consequences. For centuries black dogs have been a symbol in folklore of foreboding. Roger Ward 41

Come and hear these exhilarating and inspiring works at Brent Knoll Parish Hall on Saturday 14th September at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 from the Post Office or Ged Keele ([email protected] or 01278 769 010). There will be refreshments, including a cash bar, at the interval. Brent Knoll Weather Report – June/July 2013 After a cold Spring, June got off to a promising start, but there followed a good deal of cloud, and temperatures were disappointing. It was July that delivered the Summer weather, with several records broken and some lively thunderstorms. Rainfall was low, and by the end of July the total for the year to date was not much more than at this point in the dry year of 2010. June began with high pressure arriving from the south west, and the welcome appearance of blue skies and rising temperatures reaching a peak of 23°C (73°F) on the 6th. No rain fell until a heavy shower on the 7th, the aftermath of thunderstorms on the south coast, but it cleared up again for the Village Fete on the 8th (how do the organisers do it?). The high stayed with us, blocking the path of the Atlantic lows, until 10th June. Then the depressions moved in, and the rest of June consisted of sunshine and showers - but the showers were light, and the sunshine never sufficient to generate high temperatures. A stream of hot, humid continental air warmed things up around the 19th, but it was a sticky and uncomfortable heat. By the end of June we had recorded 21.6mm (0.8in) of rain – below average, and one seventh of the total for June 2012. The mean temperature for the month was a modest 14.6°C (58°F). July began with high pressure moving in from the west once more. This time it stayed with us from the 5th to the 22nd, and for much of that time it drew a warm, dry north-easterly breeze across the country. Temperatures rose rapidly, but here by the coast, many days saw a battle between the hot north-easterly and sea breezes from the west. Sea breezes occur when land warms up in the sunshine and heats the air above, which then rises and is replaced by cooler air from the sea. In the early days of the heat wave, temperatures at Brent Knoll were a few degrees below those inland. Later the north-east airflow became strong enough to block the sea breeze, leaving us in air heated by a slow passage across a baking UK. The hottest day here, with a daytime (0600-1800) average of 25.8°C (78°F), was the 18th: the peak temperature of 31.2°C (88°F) was recorded the following afternoon. Both are new records for this station. By 22nd July we had recorded just 0.3mm of rain and the Knoll was looking distinctly brown. That night the high pressure moved on, allowing a jumble of low pressure systems to move in from the west. As cool, wet air crossed a hot landmass to meet warm air in the east, there were spectacular thunderstorms. Brent Knoll had continuous lightning for well over an hour early on the 23rd. The last week of July saw lower temperatures, and heavy thundery showers, which took the rainfall total to 26.2mm (10.3in) – below average but not exceptional. The average temperature was 19.1°C (66°F), about 2°C above normal and another new station record. So ended a month that will be remembered for some time to come. More Ramblings of a Rambler The recent spell of hot weather meant a search for the fan that was put away several years ago, the search for shorts and the opening wide of windows. The opening wide of windows led to an amusing incident in the rambling household. I was sat in an armchair catching my breath while the grandchildren I was trying to keep amused were out of the room, when the youngest came in saying there were birdies in the play room. On investigation I found two of the baby swallows, that had been reared in the stables, flying around upstairs. The grandchildren were delighted to have two chattering swallows in their playroom. After leaving their marks on picture frames and tall bedroom furniture they left via an open window. The breeding pair are rearing a second brood in the garage; I hope my car battery remains charged as they have built their second nest in my coiled jump leads that hang on the garage wall. Now that the long grass has been cut and made into hay makes it easier to see Roe Deer grazing in the fields on the Knoll. Even more exciting is to watch them make for the woods on being spooked, how graceful they run and leap. I hear investigations are taking place to locate a suitable site for the Barn Owl Nesting box purchased in memory of Judy Barwell, it is hoped it will be in place by the Winter. July and August has seen an abundance of butterflies of which the majority have been cabbage whites. Cabbage whites are hated by gardeners and loved by children. Gardeners hate them because they destroy cabbage plants. Children love them because they destroy cabbage plants. The Rambler Friends of Guiding

October 19th and October 20th 2013 Last year’s Scarecrow Trail was a fantastic success – with your help let’s make this year’s even better!!! A Scarecrow Trail is a great Community event for all to enjoy. You can get involved either as a Scarecrow maker or come along and follow the trail. In a Scarecrow Trail, members of the public and local businesses and groups make scarecrows and display them during the weekend of the trail. The organisers provide a notice showing your scarecrow’s name and a clue which you display next to your scarecrow. During the weekend of the Trail the organisers will be selling “trail sheets” with details of a puzzle which can only be solved using the clues on the labels displayed next to or on the scarecrows. The trail sheets will be available from the Parish Hall from 10am – 4pm on both days of the event where light refreshments will also be served. These trail sheets are returned with the answer to the organisers at the Parish Hall. The organisers then put the trail sheet into a draw for a cash prize. A map showing where all the scarecrows are will be available from the Parish Hall from 10am – 4pm on both days of the event. Trail sheets will also be available from all members of Girlguiding Brent Knoll, Brent Knoll Post Office and Hair by Design. Our theme this year is “Film Characters” It does not matter if you take that to mean John Wayne, Harry Potter or Shrek – all are possible choices! You may want to choose a character in keeping with your organisation, a hobby or your occupation, a favourite film, favourite actor or actress. It’s up to you!! With the possibility of winning over £125 in prizes (thanks to our kind local sponsors) as well as supporting our local rainbow, brownie & guide groups, it’s a struggle to find a good reason not to take part in this Scarecrow Trail. And it’s FREE to enter!! So go on, together with your family or group put your thinking caps on; trawl through your DVD collection, look at the DVD section in Tesco/Asda, browse the internet, choose your character and send in your entry form. Note: Entries must be returned to Jane Sinnott no later than the 1st of October 2013. Prizes and sponsors Best Scarecrows £50 first prize kindly donated by Angie and Pete Hicks of Kingfisher Windows £30 second prize kindly donated by Pat Paulson of Brent Knoll Cattery £20 third prize kindly donated by Kate and David Bull of David Bull Optometrists For the Trail Prize £25 prize for one lucky winner kindly donated by Cathy Hurley of Tadpoles Pre School We are very grateful to these four local businesses for their support The prize winners will be announced at the Village Harvest Supper in the Parish Hall on Saturday 19th October. We hope everyone in the village will take part in this event by either making their own scarecrow or taking part in the trail. 49

Barn Owl Box to remember Judy Barwell On Tuesday 5th August Chris Sperring, Conservation Officer of the Hawk & Owl Trust delivered the Barn Owl Box we are going to put up in memory of Judy. After some consultation on suitable sites, Peter Osborn & Richard, Judy's son went off to investigate a couple of options that might be the right place to put the box. It looks likely that it will not be on public land where we can all visit it but the important factor is that it ends up somewhere where a barn owl will want to make it home. Thanks to everyone who donated or bought raffle tickets for the Barn Owl Clock in the Post Office. The box has cost £55 and I am just investigating how much the plaque will cost. We have raised £75 so far. Any monies left over will be donated to The Somerset Wildlife Trust of which Judy was a member and fundraiser. The Raffle for the barn Owl Clock as seen in the Post Office will be drawn on Friday 13th September. Still time to get your ticket! Anita Berrow Conservation Group BAT HUNT AROUND BRENT KNOLL On the evening of Tuesday September 24th 2013 the Berrow Conservation Group invites you on a tour round the village of Brent Knoll hunting for ‘Bats’. We will be meeting outside Brent Knoll Parish Hall at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start, accompanied by Ged Keele of the Somerset Wildlife Trust, who will help identify the sights and sounds of these interesting flying mammals. It may be an idea to bring a torch with you, and a small donation of £1 would be appreciated for our group's funds. Ann Griffiths PREVENTING RATS Nobody loves a rat! They are mainly active at night, but are often seen during the day when they are searching for food or water. There is a commonly quoted statistic that you are never more than six feet away from a rat – and that may not be too far from the truth. However, there are plenty of things that you can do to discourage rats from coming in to your garden or home: Feed the birds – not the rats. Do not put large amounts of bird food out – which is also very attractive to rats and encourages them in to your garden. Sweep or pick up any seeds/food that falls out of the bird feeders and think about bringing in the feeders at night. Compost heaps – are for compost and fantastic for recycling green waste. Don’t be tempted to put your food waste on the compost heap – this just provides a convenient and warm ‘take-away’ for rats. Dispose of your food waste in the food bins provided – help and advice from Somerset Waste partnership on www.somersetwaste.gov.uk Fluffy Bunnies – and pets kept in hutches – again don’t let the rats help themselves to your pets’ food. Make sure that pet areas are kept clean and tidy and sweep up any food, waste and bedding materials – rats will make a meal of all sorts of things …… A good reason to keep your garden tidy – rats love neglected gardens, piles of refuse – all that stuff that you keep meaning to take to the tip, but leave in a heap outside. All these things provide rats with a very desirable ‘des-res’ - so don’t invite them in. Sheds – and the things stored in them – are also very attractive to rats. Give your shed a good de-clutter to make sure there is no hiding place for a rat. Again, rats will eat all sorts of things, so all those old deck chairs, cushions and stockpiles will be an invitation in; so clear it out and dispose of it at the tip or through a collection from your kerbside. Finally, if the worst comes to the worse and you have a rat problem; Sedgemoor District Council offers a pest control service for a fee. Further information on pricing, arranging a survey and treatment can be found on our website www.sedgemoor.gov.uk or call us on 0845 408 2540. 52 USEFUL VILLAGE CONTACTS: PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL, Secretary Maxine Bashford 760190 CHURCH WARDEN Miss Frances James 760287 Mike Smith 760691 CHURCH CLEANERS Wiet Harperp 760803 CHURCH FLOWERS Mrs Marion Viningg 760612 POPPY ORGANISER Mrs Sally Wingate 760610 BRASS CLEANERS METHODIST CHURCH Revd.
