  • A Civil War Hoard from Middleham, North Yorkshire
    A CIVIL WAR HOARD FROM MIDDLEHAM, NORTH YORKSHIRE CRAIG BARCLAY ON 22 June 1993, whilst metal-detecting on land in the vicinity of Cotescue Park, near Middleham in North Yorkshire, Mr. William Caygill uncovered two pottery vessels, each sealed with a flat capstone and each containing a substantial quantity of silver coins. Two days later he uncovered a third pot of coins at a distance of some twenty paces to the west of his original find. Mr Caygill promptly reported his find to the Deputy Coroner, Mr. Jeremy Cave, and on 30 June 1994 the pots and their contents were brought to the Yorkshire Museum for examination.1 Mr. Caygill had taken great care not to mix the contents of the three ceramic vessels and it is accordingly possible to treat each jar and its contents as a separate entity, with the initial find being labelled Pot A and Pot B, and the subsequent find Pot C. A total of 5099 coins were recovered, which can be summarised as follows: Pot A England - 1182 coins: Edward VI: 5 shillings; 1 sixpence Philip & Mary: 8 shillings; 1 sixpence Elizabeth 1: 151 shillings; 340 sixpences; 1 groat James I: 110 shillings; 41 sixpences Charles I: 154 halfcrowns; 320 shillings; 50 sixpences Scotland - 9 coins Ireland - 1 coin Spanish possessions (Europe) - 53 coins Spanish possessions (America) - 2 coins Counterfeit - 16 coins Total: 1263 coins, with face value of £74 17s 8Md Pot B England - 2025 coins: Edward VI: 9 shillings; 1 sixpence Philip & Mary: 6 shillings; 3 sixpences Elizabeth I: 260 shillings; 515 sixpences James I: 196 shillings;

FORMER publications * of the Camden Society have brought before our notice Richard Duke of Gloucester, as continually engaged in the intrigues of a court or the storms of civil war, while for four centuries both his person and character have been the theme of almost universal vituperation. Into these subjects it is not the province of the editor of the present volume to enter; and, in truth, there is now the less occasion for it, since the volumes of Miss Halsted have appeared in the field of literature. This talented and zealous writer has adduced a host of authorities, apparently proving that his personal deformity existed but in the libels of an opposing faction, perpetuated in the pages of the poet and the novelist; while at the same time her researches seem to throw such light over the darker shades in his chequered career, as to induce the strongest presumption that he was not guilty of, or accessory to, those startling crimes which have been charged to his account. The limits, however, of the brief introduction allotted to this work, compel us to turn our attention from scenes of battle and of blood to other, and to us more interesting portions of his history. Cette année, le guide recense plus de 550 pubs, dont 81 nouveaux établissements, situés dans tout le Royaume-Uni, depuis Kylesku en Écosse jusqu'à Perranuthnoe et Southwolt en Angleterre en passant par Cahersiveen en Irlande. Sous la direction de Michael Ellis, Directeur du guide MICHELIN, cette sélection montre que la qualité de la cuisine proposée dans les pubs ne cesse de s’améliorer, et que de plus en plus d'établissements choisissent de servir en priorité des produits régionaux. De nombreux pubs parviennent à relever le défi du rapport qualité-prix : « Les chefs n'hésitent plus à utiliser des pièces moins nobles afin de composer des menus à des prix plus abordables, notamment pour le déjeuner, souligne la rédactrice en chef du guide Rebecca Burr. Ils se montrent aussi plus souples que par le passé et acceptent plus facilement d'échanger les menus du bar et du restaurant. Middleham was designated as a Conservation Area in 1973. Local Planning Authorities are required to “formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of any parts of their area, which are conservation areas” (Section 71 of the Act). This character appraisal and management plan fulfils that duty. In making a decision on an application for development in a Conservation Area, “special attention shall be paid to the desirability of preserving and enhancing the character or appearance of that area” (Section 72 of the Act). While this should ensure that harmful change is not allowed, some changes, not normally requiring planning permission (known as permitted development) could still damage the special qualities of the area. Local Authorities have special powers to issue directions removing certain permitted development rights from properties if it can be shown that it is necessary.

Full days: 15-24 km per day, 3½-6½ hours walking Using shortening options: 10-15km per day, 2¼-4½ hours walking using ride-with-luggage transfers at the start of each day Max. Grade: This route, our third in England and our first in the north of the country, seeks to show walkers the two sides of Yorkshire’s rural heritage, and was designed by local residents and On Foot clients Shaun and Lynda Callaghan. Starting in the eastern lowlands, in the little cathedral “city” of Ripon, the first day takes you straight to one of the most important centres of medieval England, Fountains Abbey, which owned vast tracts of the county before Henry VIII decided that he would prefer them for himself and his barons. The setting of the Abbey is without parallel. The route then starts to climb, gradually at first, through the sheep country of the Dales (sheep were as important in medieval times as they became in the 18th century when they were the basis for Yorkshire’s industrial growth). Linking the pretty villages of Pateley Bridge, Burnsall, Hebden, Grassington and Kettlewell, your route reaches limestone country via justly famous Malham “Cove”, before traversing the market town of Settle to your destination, Austwick village, nestling in the dale below the gaunt massif of Ingleborough, one of Yorkshire’s “three peaks”, and your final challenge.
