The town’s application, which is led by the Business Improvement District (BID), focuses on the comprehensive regeneration work which is helping to transform the town centre. On judging day itself GBHS representatives visited the town centre to learn about the town centre. Jayne May, Project Executive from the BID was in town on judging day to explain more about the town’s application and is hopeful that Rochdale can pick up the prize. “It was great to be able to show representatives from GBHS around Rochdale and for them to gain a better understanding of the numerous projects, events and initiatives that are delivered in the town centre. “They were very impressed with how our businesses work together throughout the year to benefit the high street and how they are constantly thinking outside the box to bring extra visitors to Rochdale.“ Now all we can do is wait for the results which will be revealed at a ceremony in January. YOUR TOWN CENTRE NEWSLETTER Christmas 2019 Town Centre Rangers John Cooke and Lyndsey White have recently been appointed as Town Centre Rangers by the BID. The rangers have been patrolling town centre streets as part of the BID’s commitment to support businesses and provide a safer environment to live, work, study and visit. They are easily recognised by their blue uniforms which will display a “Rochdale BID Ranger” logo. The rangers will be part of the well-established radio link scheme which supports the Pubwatch and Shopwatch initiatives. Paul Ambrose, BID Manager, said: “The rangers will support the businesses with face to face contact, be the eyes and ears of the area and work closely with partner organisations. "They will be providing frontline customer service, handling situations as they arise and supporting the other frontline services, carrying out regular daily patrols to help act as a deterrent whilst becoming a welcoming and reassuring sight and presence for the public. "The rangers will take a friendly approach to deter antisocial behaviour, whilst also playing a supportive role to the many retailers and helping to keep our town safe.” This initiative supports the BID agenda to boost safety and security in the town centre and act as an additional platform in BID’s overall commitment to enhancing the atmosphere of the town as a welcoming, friendly and inviting place to live, work, study and visit. Looking forward to 2020 2020 promises to be a fantastic year for the town centre with the obvious highlights being Dippy arriving and Rochdale Riverside opening in April. Rochdale Riverside will have a mix of retail and leisure facilities that include Hollywood Bowl’s Puttstars indoor golf facility and Reel Cinema. There will be over 500 car parking spaces at the site and it is located next to the transport interchange and town centre Metrolink stop. From February the world's most famous diplodocus will be storming Rochdale’s Number One Riverside for a four-month stay. Not only will Dippy himself be on display in a move that will attract 300,000 people by the time he leaves at the end of June, but a separate exhibition at the Touchstones gallery will let dino-lovers of all ages immerse themselves in his history. The BID is working with partners to ensure that the town centre as a whole benefits from these exciting high-profile events Throughout 2020, the BID will implement projects and initiatives which will support businesses and complement the programme of investment BID enquiries in the town centre that partner organisations are delivering. • The Rochdale Baptists
THE ROCHDALE BAPTISTS 1773 - 1973 A SHORT HISTORY Written in 1973 to commemorate the Bi-centenary of the West Street Baptist Church Rochdale. (RE-PUBLISHED: ON THE OCCASION OF THE 225TH ANNIVERSARY IN 1998.) By: A. Whitehead. “On 18th September 1773 friends at Rochdale asked at an Ebenezer (Bacup) Church meeting exemption from supporting the ministry there any longer in consequence of the expense attaching to the infant cause at Rochdale. Their prayer was granted by the famous Rev. John Hirst and his people without demur.” Page 1 of 47 That part of the Christian Church known as the Baptists is less than 400 years old, although in earlier times sections were in existence whose fundamental principle was that of the immediate and direct accountancy of God of each individual; that between God and the individual there was no mediator save Jesus Christ. These were the Anabaptists who rejected the priestly notions of Christian ministry and all forms of State support. They maintained their preachers by free-will offerings; whose one qualification must be a divine call to such service. Anabaptism in England was never organised and lacked leadership, for this reason it cannot be regarded as the seed-bed of the English Baptists. John Smyth was the first English Baptist. He first took orders of the Church of England, then became a Puritan Separatist and finally a Baptist Separatist, eventually fleeing to Holland and becoming the pastor of a Church of English Separatist there. In 1609 he first baptised himself and then baptised Thomas Helwys, a gentleman of Basford in Nottingham, who financed the emigration of a Gainsborough Separatist Church to Amsterdam, and others.

  • RDA Project Case Studies (R Town Hall) V1
Heritage Rochdale: Rochdale Town Hall Project Overview Rochdale Town Hall is a building of national importance, and one of the finest Victorian town halls in the UK. Designed by William Crossland, the Town Hall was opened in 1871 as a symbol of the town’s industrial might. A century and a half later, the building is considered a masterpiece of gothic architecture. Location Rochdale Town Centre The restoration project A masterpiece it is, but one in need of some tender loving care. The building is showing its age, with a crumbling drainage system, leaking roof and darkened, dust-smeared windows and wooden panelling. A digital scan of the building carried out by the Archaeology Department at Salford University also revealed a treasure trove of forgotten rooms and obscured features. The restoration project aims to restore the building to its original glory (2021 is the 150th anniversary of its original opening), and make it an open and accessible community space. In January 2021 phase 1 of the project got underway, funded by Rochdale Borough Council. This will include all major infrastructure works, including removal of asbestos, strip out of old electrical system and the modernisation of the building’s internal drainage. Structural works will be carried out to create openings for new lifts and access points. Phase 2 of the project, beginning in summer 2021, includes replacing the roof, repairs to the external stonework, cleaning of the building and restoration of key historical rooms like the Great Hall and Grand Staircase. A new exhibition on the history of the Town Hall - featuring information panels at key points around the building - will be installed.
