Intention and Diverging Interpretings of Implicature in the ''Uncovered Meat'
Intention and diverging interpretings of implicature in the ‘‘uncovered meat’’ sermon MICHAEL HAUGH Abstract The standard model of communication in linguistic pragmatics is founded on the assumption that ‘‘successful’’ communication involves the addressee making inferences about the intentions of the speaker. Miscommunication of implicatures thus presumably arises when the addressee does not cor- rectly infer the speaker’s intention. In this paper, however, it is argued that this view of the (mis)communication of implicatures does not adequately account for the manner in which intentions may become the subject of dis- cursive dispute in interaction thereby giving rise to diverging interpretings of implicatures. Drawing from an analysis of the ‘‘uncovered meat’’ com- ments made by Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali and the ensuing controversy over what was implied by them, it is argued that to label such an incident as sim- ply a misunderstanding of the speaker’s intentions is misleading. Instead, it is suggested that the way in which Hilali’s comments were shifted from a specific audience in the Muslim community to wider Australian society by the media engendered discursive dispute over Hilali’s intentions, and thus gave rise to the co-constitution of diverging interpretings of what was im- plied by Hilali. Building a model of the communication of implicatures must therefore move beyond the received view that it involves ‘‘correctly’’ inferring the intentions of speakers to encompass a broader view where both converging and diverging interpretings of implicatures emerge through their conjoint co-constitution in interaction. 1. Introduction One of the key assumptions underlying the field of pragmatics is that what is communicated, in particular, meaning beyond what is said, cru- cially involves the intentions of speakers. -

Madeline Stuart “Through modelling I am changing society’s view of people with Disabilities. Exposure is creating awareness, acceptance, and inclusion” Madeline’s Story Madeline is a unique 20-year-old model from Brisbane, Australia. Madeline notably, has been dubbed by the press as not only a Super Model, but “the world’s most famous model with Down syndrome”. This incredibly courageous, beautiful, and talented young woman has had astonishing success in the short time she has been modelling, and has captured media attention both in Australia and internationally. As with many people with Down syndrome, Madeline struggled with her weight for a long time, and in early 2015 she decided to get healthy and chase after her dreams which included dance. She lost over 20kg, and is now chang- ing society’s perception of people with disabilities, one photo shoot at a time. Madeline’s career started when Maddy attended a Fashion Parade late 2015 with her mum and said to her mum “mum me model”. Rosanne knew it would take a lot of work and dedication, and told Madeline if she wanted to commit to the journey, she would fully support her. After Madeline lost a few more kilos of weight, Rosanne (Madeline's Mum) created social media accounts and posted a ‘before and after’ photo online to show the results and to encourage others. Rosanne was very confident that the story Madeline had to share with the world would travel around the globe, long before it actually hit the internet. Just as predicted, the photo went viral. -
Going Down the Hole Beaconsfield, Celebrities and the Changing News Culture in Australia JASON BAINBRIDGE
going down the hole Beaconsfield, Celebrities and the Changing News Culture in Australia JASON BAINBRIDGE We didn’t realise the hype would be as big as it has been, and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. When we were down the hole one day, I remember tapping Brant on the shoulder and asking him if he thought we’d make the front page of The [Launceston] Examiner, our local paper. Then we get out and Oprah wants to interview us! Todd Russell1 I would like my life to settle down and to be normal again … Before we could go outside and there would be no cameras on us but now cameras follow Dad and everyone wants his autograph … And I wish the media would mind its business because they say things that are not true. Maddison Russell (Todd Russell’s daughter, from a writing competition)2 — Introduction By the time this article sees print, the events at Beaconsfield, Tasmania will have joined a backlog of similar news moments, largely unremembered by all but those who were personally affected by what happened there. Yet for fourteen days in mid-2006 this small mining town became, like so many places before it, ‘the network executive’s best friend’3 and an indication of a significant change in the way television news is reported and packaged in Australia. At 9.23 pm, on 25 April (Anzac Day), a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine killed miner Larry Knight (his body was recovered two days later). On 30 April, two miners—Todd Russell and Brant Webb—were discovered to still be alive one kilometre underground.
