2 Wisconsin Broadcaster President’s Column By Michelle Vetterkind, CAE he WBA’s 2013 DC Trip is one that will be Tiffany. Tremembered for quite some time. As I said The Joint Finance Committee still has several weeks of agency to the group on several occasions, “someday we briefings, along with public hearings around the state to gather input on WILL laugh about this”. the Governor’s initial budget. A special thank you to the 28 hearty souls who What can you do at this point? Check in with me to see if your ended up being able to go on the Trip. And…a respective Members of the Assembly/Senate have indicated support special thank you, as well, to the 10 additional (beyond this list of co-sponsors). In addition, what you can ALWAYS hearty souls who I know tried their best to make do (and should do on a continued basis, regardless of if we have a it to DC, despite all the cancelled flights from specific “ask” or not), is invite them into your station for a tour and/or Wisconsin to DC. And last, but certainly not to do an interview. This is a perfect way to show your elected officials least, to those who ended up stuck in DC for an extra night due to the first-hand what equipment is needed to put (and keep) your station on hundreds of cancelled flights as a result of “Snowquestration”. the air and therefore how THEIR local station (and therefore, their local As I recapped in an e-mail to all attendees when we returned to communities) would benefit from this legislation. Wisconsin: We’ll keep you updated as to what happens next. Please know that We learned several things on this trip: there are NEVER any guarantees when it comes to getting a Bill passed. 1. DC’s definition of a snow storm is a far cry from Wisconsin’s. However, thanks to many of you, we’re off to a good…….no, make that a great start this Session! 2. The Federal Government being shut down does NOT mean the Senate In the meantime, thank you, as always, for your time & support! and the House are closed. 3. Sometimes there is no rhyme nor reason for why certain flights are Co-sponsors (AB5/SB34) – 2013-2014 Session cancelled and others are not. Rep. Garey Bies – R 4. The name of the game when it comes to our DC Trips is “go with the Rep. Ed Brooks – R flow” and try and find at least “some” humor in it. Rep. Steve Doyle – D 5. You DO make a difference! Rep. Mike Endsley – R Rep. Brett Hulsey - D Now, the irony is that, when all was said and done, I truly believe Rep. Andre Jacque – R (and have since heard the same from many who were on the trip) that Rep. – R it ended up being one of our best, and most productive, DC Trips ever. Rep. – D Every meeting (both Senate and the House) was still held and there Rep. Fred Kessler – D Rep. – R (Sponsor) seemed to be a unique bond amongst those (elected officials and broad- Rep. Dan LeMahieu – R casters) who made it to the Hill that day, despite many obstacles. Our Rep. Cory Mason – D broadcasters did a terrific job of getting our message across, conveying Rep. Dave Murphy – R the important role that you, as Wisconsin’s broadcasters play in your Rep. Steve Nass – R communities each and every day. Rep. Lee Nerison – R = = = Rep. Al Ott – R Rep. – R Allow me to provide you with an update on our Sales/Property Tax Rep. Don Pridemore – R Legislation. As you know, we hit 40 bi-partisan co-sponsors on our bill, Rep. – D which was introduced in the Assembly (AB5 – Assembly Bill #5 for the Rep. Jeff Stone – R 2013-2014 Session) by Representative Joel Kleefisch. A companion bill Rep. Patricia Strachota – R (same wording as the Assembly bill) was introduced by Senator Glenn Rep. Scott Suder – R Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt – R Grothman and has the same 40 bi-partisan co-sponsors (SB 34 – Senate Rep. – R Bill #34). We’ve heard a rumor that our bill has more co-sponsors than Rep. – R any other bill introduced so far this session. Rep. Tom Weatherston – R In addition, Brandon Scholz from the Capitol Group and I have been Rep. Mandy Wright – D busy making visits to those who are not mentioned on the co-sponsor Rep. Josh Zepnick – D list. I’m very pleased to report that we now have at least an additional Senator Tim Cullen – D 30 who have pledged their firm support in our favor if it comes to a vote (these pledges of support are both from our visits and/or according to Senator – R (Sponsor) your contacts since our State Legislative Day). Senator Rick Gudex - R At this point, we’re looking at two possible routes as to what happens Senator Dave Hansen – D Senator Neal Kedzie – R next: As a stand-alone Bill (whereby we would next have hearings in Senator Frank Lasee – R both Senate and Assembly Committees) or another route would be for Senator Joe Leibham – R it to be added to the Budget as an amendment through Joint Finance. Senator Luther Olsen – R As the Bill does have a small fiscal note, either way, to proceed, it will Senator – R have to go through the Joint Finance Committee. Senator Dale Schultz – R AB5 has been referred to the Assembly State & Local Finance Senator Jennifer Shilling – D Committee, Chaired by Representative . Senator Leah Vukmir – R SB34 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Workforce Development, Forestry, Mining, and Revenue, Chaired by Senator Tom
