  • Wisconsin State Legislature Decreases License Suspension for Non Safety-Related Monetary Judgements
For Immediate Release: February 18, 2016 Contact: Nichole Yunk Todd, 414-343-3581, [email protected] WISCONSIN STATE LEGISLATURE DECREASES LICENSE SUSPENSION FOR NON SAFETY-RELATED MONETARY JUDGEMENTS Madison, WI – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly approved a bipartisan measure that will change the maximum length of a driver’s license suspension for failure to pay a forfeiture (“FPF”) from two years to one. The bill passed in the state senate earlier this month and is now headed to Governor Walker. According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation data, FPF suspensions represent nearly 60% of all reasons for license suspension or revocation in the state at over 235,000. The second highest category is only 12%. Two-year FPF suspensions are longer than many safety-related suspensions, including first and second offense Operating While Intoxicated (OWI), reckless driving, and the accumulation of over 31 demerit points within just one year. The courts will still collect what they are owed as defendants who have monetary judgements earn income. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue collected over $21 million dollars for the courts in 2014 through its efficient Tax Refund Intercept Program (TRIP). The authors of the bill include Senators Jerry Petrowski (R-Marathon) and Nikiya Harris Dodd (D- Milwaukee) and Representatives John Spiros (R-Marshfield) and Cory Mason (D- Racine). Senator Petrowski championed the effort: “This common sense bill will help make sure people can get to work so they can pay their debts and continue to support themselves and their families.” The bill was also endorsed by key system stakeholders as a way to better focus our limited resources, including the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association, Wisconsin Trial Judges Association, Wisconsin District Attorneys Association, Wisconsin Public Defender, and Wisconsin Insurance Alliance.

  • Co-Sponsorship Memorandum
CO-SPONSORSHIP MEMORANDUM TO: All Legislators FROM: Senators Howard Marklein, Janet Bewley, Alberta Darling, Luther Olsen and Jennifer Shilling Representatives John Spiros, David Crowley, Barbara Dittrich, LaKeshia Myers, Loren Oldenburg, Jessie Rodriguez, Mike Rohrkaste, Melissa Sargent, and Don Vruwink DATE August 1, 2019 RE: Co-sponsorship of LRB-2839/1 and LRB 3700/1 Relating to: raising the legal age for sale, purchase, and possession of cigarettes and nicotine and tobacco products, providing a legal age for sale, purchase, and possession of vapor products, and providing a penalty. DEADLINE: Monday, August 12th at 12:00 PM The rampant use of e-vapor products among our youth is a demonstrated public health crisis that we seek to address by increasing the age of purchase for e-vapor and tobacco products from 18 to 21. Between 2017 and 2018 alone, the use of vapor products by high school students increased 78%, and by 48% among middle school students, according to figures from the federal Food and Drug Administration. Studies have shown nearly 40% of 12th graders report using an e-vapor product in the past 12 months. It is widely accepted that e-vapor products, and the nicotine they deliver, uniquely impact adolescent brain development, including parts of the brain most responsible for decision making, impulse control, and sensation seeking. Additionally, a National Academies study found "substantial evidence" that e-cigarette use among youth "increases the risk of transitioning to smoking conventional cigarettes." The vast majority of high school and middle school students obtain e-vapor products from social sources, such as a classmate or friend.

  • August 30, 2021 to the Madison Metropolitan School District Board
August 30, 2021 To the Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education: We encourage you swiftly to enact a policy of mandatory vaccination for all adults in MMSD facilities, including teachers and staff. With the huge increase in COVID-19 cases and the hyper-contagious delta variant circulating widely in our community and nation, we must take every possible step to protect public health -- and especially the wellbeing of our children. Last year, Madison led the way in requiring masking and moving to virtual education, but we now lag behind many other districts around the country that have enacted vaccination rules. Across the nation, as children have returned to school, pediatric ICU units are overflowing with children suffering from COVID. While children have previously been thought less susceptible to serious outcomes, they are becoming ill at alarming rates, and the long-term effects of this disease on children are unknown. Hundreds of children have died, and thousands more have suffered serious health consequences. Just as alarming, increased COVID hospitalization jeopardizes the health care resources, from staffing to beds, we have to treat people with other ailments. As responsible adults, we must do everything we can to protect the most vulnerable members of our society, including children too young to be vaccinated and the immunocompromised. It's been encouraging to see that Madison Teachers Inc. and the NEA have come out so strongly in favor of making schools safer by requiring vaccination. The time for further debate, planning, and consideration has passed. Teachers, parents, and healthcare workers agree: our community urgently needs a vaccine mandate for our schools -- and we need it now.
