When he’s not performing his contract role as a pest controller in the Ranges for Auckland Council, Willow volunteers for almost every environmental group with an interest in controlling pests within the Ranges. Each week he covers miles of dense, often steep, Hunua bush in his gumboots (no socks) to check bait lines and set traps. While it is important to control predator pests of all types: rats, possums, stoats, pigs, goats and deer, Willow says there are far more ferrets around than we think. A ferret was responsible for the death of two of the six Kiwi released into the Hunua Ranges’ Kokako Management Area in 2017. The area had been considered clear of the mustelids, but DNA tests confirmed the birds’ deaths were due to injuries caused by a ferret. Extra traps and lures were put out in the area, and a few days later the culprit ferret was caught. Willow has seen or heard of a number of ferrets found around Hunua, including 6 caught on his own property in the past 20 years.
